Ultrastik 360: The quest for new springs
« on: January 30, 2007, 02:18:54 pm »
So I love the Ultrastiks, but the stock spring is just too loose and mushy, and the 'medium' replacement spring is WAY too stiff. I know other people feel the same way, so if anyone finds a good replacement somewhere let us know, and I'll post back if I have any luck.

Are you sure you are using the medium spring? I mean you could have mistakingly used the hardest spring and in that case would definitely experience ultra stiffness. hmm

I think the general consensus is that the medium spring is where it is at on the U 360...but everyone is different.

Yes I'm sure, the hard spring is so stiff it's useless, though the medium one is barely less stiff. Unless Andy screwed up I can't imagine using either, they're way stiffer than any joystick I've ever used. Did you think the difference between the two was that great? (Med and hard I mean)

I read a post here a while back about someone swapping out the stiff spring in an E-Stick with a softer one.  I think that person just took out the spring and went to the hardware store and found a similar one.  Maybe try pulling it out and going down to your local hardware store (a real one like Ace, not Home Depot) to see what they have.

Hmm, the only Ace around here is no bigger than my house.

They will still likely have a good selection of springs.

The medium and hard springs were specially made for us, and I can easily request a lighter one. I will look into this and make them available on an our-cost-plus-postage basis.
As in anything to do with joysticks it's all so subjective. Several people have mentioned that they initially thought the medium spring was too hard until they actually fitted their sticks into a cabinet when the hard spring was best. But on balance I think there should be one between the light and medium.

It can be great if you can do it.
Remember that P parametr should be small (in current medium spring it's too big).

From left - Sanwa (default U360), medium and hard. Your springs should be longer.

Maybe the same P parametr and lenght as default Sanwa and harder material only?

Ideally Andy I'd like something between your current medium (too stiff even mounted) and the stock spring. In fact the current medium is so stiff I'd even lean more towards the stock one than in between, it's just a little too loose for my tastes. Great for full analog style, but not so much with a restrictor on and a more traditional arcade cab use. Honestly just squeezing my hand it's very hard to tell the difference between med and hard, they're very close.

As long as we're discussing issues, I have a question:

When I fit a restrictor (currently using the square one) and program the stick as such am I right in understanding that that I'm actually losing resolution on the stick wrt the map grid? In other words, even with the restrictor added in software a hit on the far edge of the map grid doesn't register. Is there no way to effective 'shrink' the grid to fit within the new restricted movement so that the full grid is available? Given the low resolution of the 9x9 grid vs the high resolution of the stick this would seem to be trivial in theory at least.
