Trouble with my IPAC, little advice?
« on: October 21, 2006, 09:37:11 pm »
Well, I'd made sure that all my controls were wired up correctly, but 1sw7 and 1sw8 on the IPAC won't register a key press no matter what's connected. That I certainly blame on the hardware. Secondarily, I'm noticing that not all my key presses are being registered and sometimes they're delayed. This is pretty much in any game. I checked all the wiring and things are tight so... Computer runs sliky smooth, etc. I'm perplexed, anyone else been here? Thanks

I would figure in the year 2176 we wouldn't be using Ipacs.  ;D

Have you done any troubleshooting?

Such as - have you tried to run any cables specifically on a known good switch on a dedicated ground to sw7 and sw8 on the ipac?

Looking at your picture, your wiring looks nice and clean:

The grounds are soldered and the rest were quick connects? My previous issues that were similar to yours involved a faulty ground. It would sometimes register and any buttons after the ground in the daisy chain wouldn't work at all. Tracing the problem I was able to determine my ground didn't have a proper connect and the ipac was fine.

Haha, you're right! I think in 2176 we use IPAC 5000s, but I didn't bring one back from the future sadly. That's a good point with the ground. I did the single wire for cleanness sake, but I never thought it would cause me problems. I'm gonna try that passmark program next. Andy at Ultimarc is seriously quick to respond, great service thus far. I'll update as I figure this out. Other than the overrunning targets and some delayed presses, things are good!

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't sw7 and sw8 the inputs that aren't implemented in Mame by default? I know I had to set these up in (tab) settings?
Of coarse this doesn't account for your delayed button presses.

I had ipac troubles.  It wouldn't shift.  And some button press issues.  Turned out I had a short.  I bent one of the quick connects installing the CP.  If I remember it was shorted to the common on another button or something, so it was basically registering a held down key all of the time.  It was on one of the higher numbered buttons on the 2up side, so it was little used and I didn't notice it.

Yes those controls which are un-assigned to any keystroke in MAME (P2 buttons 5 upwards) are a constant source of confusion! I wish the MAME devs would assign them by default!

When it worked, I used 1SW7 as 'shift' and 2SW7 as shift-escape. It was real nice. Then I used  other buttons shifted as tab, ~, etc.  Dedicated shift buttons keep me out of trouble. Don't want to escape in the middle of a Streets of Rage battle. I'm going to figure this out with Andy's help, no doubt.
