LiquidMame - Four-player Control Panel
« on: October 09, 2006, 11:59:48 am »
Hey guys. I took some time out from the marquee design to finish up the artwork on my modular 4P control panel. This CP is a spin-off of Pixelhugger's stunning work done on Project Arcadeus. I basically expanded on his two-player design to make it a four-player panel. It's not to the same level of Pixelhugger's incredible artistic talent, but I think it came out decent.

I was very impressed with the quality of printouts from Kinkos. I had them do a greyscale printout on normal paper as the cutout template - only cost $6  and reduced the risk of destroying my expensive color printout :)

Is there a reason you have 6 buttons for all players and not just 4 for players 3 and 4?

Is there a reason you have 6 buttons for all players and not just 4 for players 3 and 4?

Mainly for aesthetics right now, but also for the flexibility to emulate other systems besides MAME in the future.

Yeah I can see the reasoning, it does look very nice.  Makes everything uniform and consistent.

Nice artwork and nice job with the assembly.

Might I suggest black player start buttons? Those white ones are a little too 'in your face'..but maybe that's what your after.

MikeD has got button labels if you do want to go with black, or any other color. Come to think of it color-coding them to the 4 control colors might be even nicer. Would make it easier for people to spot the correct one too.

Really really well done! Has a Gaunlet feel to it with those colored panels. What'd you use to create the chrome effect? It really printed nicely. Chrome is awfully hard to get to print without a hue or cast to it. Very impressive.

Thanks for all the kudos guys - especially from Knievel and Pixelhugger! Receiving compliments from you guys based on what you've accomplished really means a lot.

Knievel - I really like your idea of changing up the P1-P4 buttons. After checking out your page again and taking another look at 'Arcade Mania' and 'Woody', I think that the black or colored buttons will work very nice on my CP. I've already contacted MikeD to inquire about the vinyl decals - thanks!

Pixelhugger - In a nutshell, I got lucky! I had never really done any graphic work prior to working on my Mame cabinet and anything that I've done so far has been based on the inspiration of others. I really did almost fall off my chair when I saw the artwork you did on Arcadeus and wanted to see if I could get similar results myself in a 4P layout. It took me 20-30 hours to get to the point where it resembled anything like Arcadeus and another 20-30 hours of tweaking to get it to the point where I was happy. I found a tutorial on-line to get the brushed aluminium effect and then when I played with the beveling/embossing settings and lighting, it gave a chrome look to it. I agree it came out looking kind of cool, but it was purely through luck in playing with the settings.
