Speaker hack question -- Tweeters?
« on: August 03, 2006, 01:04:23 pm »
I'm at the point of my cab project now that I need to pick out a nice set of speakers.  What I would ultimately like to do is go with the Sony XPlod XSV1342A 5 1/4" speakers (check them out HERE) since they seem to be the car speaker of choice around here.

I know many of you have used the Creative Inspire 2.1 2500 for the hack, and from what I can tell, the speaker simply had the one cone that handled all frequencies (I think?).

Now that I've been shopping, the speaker sets that catch my eye (cheaper price with a modular volume control device) seem to include a small tweeter on each speaker.  A good example is the newer Creative Inspire 2.1 T3030 set.

The question I have is this:  Does the fact that the speakers have the 2 seperate cones complicate the whole deal when hacking them into car speakers?  Or is it still a matter of simply cutting the cables and attaching them to the XPlods?  I'd hate to purchase speakers just to find out they won't work, and I'd rather pick up the speakers locally.

Sorry, wrong topic.
I love Windows ME.  Blue is my favorite color.

It is a matter of just cutting the cables and attaching them to the Sony Xplod Speakers.  Even with tweeters you will still have two wires that come out of the speaker one positive and one negative.  You will probably have to break open the speaker to tell which is positive and which is negative.  Another thing to remember is that the impedance has to match for the two sets of speakers.  Both the Sony Xplod speakers and the Creative Inspire 2.1 T3030 are 4 ohms.  So if you go with these two speaker sets your impedance will match.

Here is a video from Retroblast that may help:

hey, i'm kind of in the same boat here too.  i picked up some pioneer car audio speakers from my friend and have that creative inspire 2.1 speaker setup too.  i haven't got around to hooking them up yet.  i had a question to ask you.  are you going to shield your speakers or use bucking magnets or just nothing at all?  i had a great conversation with a manager at a local car audio store.  for some reason he thought i was saying a word that rhymes with "bucking," to totally play a joke on him.
this bozo thinks, so therefore he definitely is a bozo

I am not sure if all of the creative inspire 2.1 setups are 4 ohms.  I have searched some to see if the creative inspire 2.1 T2900 speakers are 4 ohms and I couldn't find anywhere that said what the ohms are.  A quick way to find out if the creative inspire 2.1 T2900 speakers are 4 ohms is to open them up.  On the back of the speaker it should say how many ohms they are.  I bet it is 4 ohms, but to be sure you'd better open them up.

Well, I was wondering about unshielded speakers myself, but I think that in my case, the speakers will be far enough away from the monitor that it won't matter.  Your mileage may vary, of course.

To be honest, I'm not sure WHAT I'll do if I end up needing to do anything about that... I kinda intend to cross that bridge if I get to it, though :)

The set up in my cabinet is two Sony Xplod speakers connected to a Creative Inspire 2.1 2500 sub.  I have had no magnetic interference occur with the monitor.  As long as your speakers are not directly over your monitor you shouldn't have to worry about shielding them or using bucking magnets.
