Can I use 1/4" router bits in a 1/2" shank router?
« on: July 17, 2006, 06:43:45 pm »
My router accepts 1/2" shank bits but most of the stores around here carry 1/4" bits. Is there an adapter of some sort? Or is there a better solution to this problem?

I think you are looking for a bit extension.  Something like this...

Depending on the router, you can sometimes find replacement collets in the other size.

So... whatcha got? :)

There's usually an adaptor that fits into your router's collet to change the size shank your router will accept.  It simply slides in and is gripped by the larger collet, which in turn tightens and grips the smaller-shanked bits.

Who makes your router and what model is it?
