Gamecreature Arcade - Control Panel
« on: June 03, 2006, 05:24:21 pm »
Here's the control panel I have planned for my arcade cabinet. It's only 6 inches deep - the lower half wraps around to the front. I plan to add some art from the marquee into the inset panels on either side of the logo.

Thanks, guys. My only concern is how the colors come out when I get it printed (I plan on using MameMarquees). Hopefully, the greens won't come out too dark.

BTW, here's how the matching marquee is shaping up. I think I'm going to add an additional horizontal element to give it more weight.

BobbyG66: Someday I'll share with you guys all of the rejected ideas. ;)

Veinman:  :laugh2: The human characters in my cartoons have five fingers, but I sometimes forget if the creature is supposed to have 4 or 5! Here's a bit of trivia - take a look at the old Popeye and Betty Boop cartoons - you'll find that the Fleischers used five fingers. There was a New Yorker cartoonist who used to work at Disney and when he quit, he'd frequently draw characters with 6 or more fingers, just to balance things out!

I love the artwork...

I'm curious about the layout. Do you prefer the offset 6 buttons? Also, the location of the credit - if I was playing it seems like my fore arm would accidentally hit it a lot. How does it do in a mockup?

The CPO is going on an existing CP that is only six inches deep. The rest wraps around the front and below. There's also a metal bracket inside that limits where I can locate some of my switches. This layout seemed to be the best way to use the real estate. The credit switches are actually located on the bottom of the front half of the CP.

Very cool CPO, I love this kind of artwork as well. Look forward to seeing it on your cabinet.

Mamemarquees is definitely the way to go, Scott will do it justice.  :)

Scott's already proven himself to be an excellent printer to me, just by the way he's been handling my order. I can't wait to see how it turns out. I'll be sure to post pics when it comes in and share the completed project with everybody. Now if only my skills with a saw equaled those with a pencil... :(

The artwork just came in from MameMarquees and it looks fantastic. I'll take pictures later. I don't think I'll have too much trouble installing the marquee (though these universal brackets still have me befuddled - I don't know how I'm supposed to squeeze the thing inbetween those things...). However, I may have to rethink my strategy concerning the CPO. I was going to apply it first and then drill, guaranteeing that the holes would line up. But I'm really concerned that the holw saw may rip or tear the art. Would it be better to risk misalignment and drill the holes before applying the art? Too many decisions...

Can't wait to see that marquee installed and all lit up!   :applaud:

Spystyle used to have an awesome cab making tutorial available, but he sells it on ebay now.   :'(   Anyhoo, the reason I mention that is he used a technique for drilling with the CPO already installed that involves reverse drilling first so as not to tear the CPO.  He was using a CPO printed on Avery sticker paper, so I'm not sure if this applies to a vinyl overlay, but thought I would throw that out there in case someone can confirm that works on vinyl.

So what did you end up doing...did you apply the CP then drill or vice-versa?

I laid some tissue over the CPO and made a template that I used for drilling holes. I think it saved on wear and tear on the CPO in the long run.

I was thinking the same thing.  The artwork is very well done though.

I just don't have the width for a seven button layout. By staggering the buttons like this, I can remap the 6th button to become the "D" button on Neo-geo games. It's not perfect, but it was the best solution I could come up with.

As for the credit button, I think this image should clarify things:
