Anyone recommend a good "hackable" set of speakers?

Hello,

I am going to replace my speaker setup in my cab.  Well just my amp really.  I have a little 20W amp I built from electronickits.com, and it has always had PC feedback that bled through to the speakers (4" sheilded HAPP type.)  Anway, I am looking for a cheaper set of speakers I can buy that are fairly easily hacked so that I can have a remote mounted volume control (which I have currently but will need to replace.)   A subwoofer would be a nice touch, but not required.  I have seen some use the USB powered type, which is nice, but I don't really have any USB ports to spare.  Thanks in advance!

These speakers came with both a volume control and a subwoofer.  Also, it wasn't hard for me to hack these speakers.  My set up is the subwoofer hooked up to two 5inch by 7inch Sony Xplod speakers and the results are simply marvelous.

I received my refurb Z3i's. They seem like great speakers for the $$. However the cables are hardwired - no plugs on the speakers. And a weird 5 pin din thing that plugs into the subwoofer. All the cable lengths are relatively short, so I will probably have to cut up the wires and extend them. A bit of a pain but do-able. But for less than $35 shipped I am happy.

I ended up using a cheap set of USB powered Beston speakers.  I imediately cut up the speakers and pulled the Amp out and fit it all in a project box with a 1/8" jack to plug into my computer and a set of speaker disconnects to go up to my happ speakers.  The outcome is very good, and the speakers sound great even though they only get about 2.5W each!  I will post pics of the finished product if I can find my camera!

Benwin!  Yea that is what I mean....not beston!  I used those exact speakers and they worked out great with my 4" Happ speakers.  I shoved the insides of the benwin speaker into a little radio shack project box and mounted it inside my cabinet.  Works great!
