How do you hook the speakers up and amplify them from a PC?

If you dont want to use the usual computer speakers you can feed the line out of your audio card to a stereo amp of any type and run the speakers from that.   The if your audio card has other types of outputs some adjustment of your levels may be required.   Always start low and work up do you dont blow anything.

http://www.mameworld.net/massive/How-to/Amp_Install/amp_install.html here is a real good tutorial on how to install  an amp and regular speakers to a cab.

http://www.oscarcontrols.com/speaker/ - I am not sure exactly what you are looking for, but I used this tutorial.  I think they sound great for arcade games.

I'm totally happy with my current setup.

I'm using 5 watt shielded arcade speakers in my cabinet that I bought from Bob Roberts (http://www.therealbobroberts.com/) for $4.00 each...

...connected to my PC using an amplifer taken from a hacked up pair of USB powered Benwin PC speakers.

I have 2 10W shielded speakers, Kiosk amp from Happ with 12V DC 1.5amp power supply and it kicks ass.
Expensive way to do it but hey ya can't take it with you.

I've updated my diagram to what I believe is a better wiring scheme using 4 pin molex connnectors. and a design that will send mono JAMMA output to both speakers (dual mono)...

I'm not totally settled about the wire order in the molex connectors.  The "soundblaster" style CD-ROM audio connector always had the two negatives together in the middle.  That way, if you plugged it in backwards, the worst that happened is that the stereo image was reversed.  With a true molex connector, you cannot plug it in backwards so that shouldn't be a problem.  However, not everyone will use a connector that can only be plugged in one way so it might be a good idea to put the two negatives together in the middle.

Any thoughts?

I gutted a pair of 120W PMPO speakers. Took the 4" 5W shielded woofers out and dumped the tweeters and used the transformer and amplifier board to create a new setup. It has two TDA2030A amp ICs which are rated at 18W each. Didn't know crap speakers could actually be set up later and be worthwhile!
I love the life I lead. I wish I could afford it.

I had a pair of polk car audio speakers laying around.. paid about 160-180 for them but did not put them in my car (long story)

So instead of letting them go to waste i'm going to use them in my cab.  I have already played mame on them without problem.  (stand-alone not in a cab)

went from: digital out on soundcard -> receiver digital input -> speakers.

They go louder than I would want to listen to.. and the silk tweeters make the highs pretty smooth..

I bought 2 of the 10W 4" speakers from Happ, and then bought a 2 X 10W stereo amplifier kit from electronickits.com.  I powered it using the 12V power from my computer then just ran an audio cable from my sound card to it.  I used a wall-mount volume control between the amp and the speakers.  Sounds awesome, very authentic!
