The Mame Name Game
« on: February 16, 2006, 10:04:33 pm »
Ok, basically, suggest a MAME game for people to try that you think is a fun game that they might not have played before.

I suggest to the next poster...

I like Jump Bug.  It's easy once you get the hang of it and the imagery is very trippy.

Also Dragon Breed [Edit: said "Dragon Seed"] has really cool graphics and gameplay.  It's a side-scrolling shooter where you ride on a dragon and you can whip the dragon's tail around to protect you during tough times.

One of my all-time favorites is Parodius... I actually have the Super Famicon cart of this game I got from Europe - definitely not available in the U.S. as it pokes fun at American icons... a side scroller where you shoot at syringes, dancing penguins, clowns, etc.  One of the early bosses is an eagle in red white and blue that sheds its feathers when you shoot it, and then there's the Vegas showgirl in between whose legs you have to nagivate to get to the next level... it's very neat and challenging.

Reactor. Gottlieb game that uses a trackball and has wicked addictive music.

Another one: Atari's Black Widow. Vector game with dual joysticks that consequently has a bit of a Robotron or SmashTV feel.

Thats not really the kind of point is it?

no, and i can venture a guess as to what his point was, and still is:

He was trying to head this thread off before it just became a copy of any of those other threads, only with a different title and premise behind it.

So begs the question, why do we need yet another one of these types of threads?

Although I do appreciate the arcade spin to the thread (so it's not completely gamefaqs-ish,) it's still unnecessary especially when there are not one or two, but multiple other threads encompassing the same idea.

edit:  Heh, 20 posts.  4 of 'em right here.  Not trying to be prejudiced or anything, but this is generally how it goes.  When posters start branching out to other sites and forums and try to spread although-well-intentioned-cheer.  It really only succeeds in driving the regulars/mods crazy, because it can be the road to ruin for a board.  Pretty soon you have two, three threads, then within a short amount of time, a good chunk of the forums' first few pages are opinion/poll threads.  I like a happy thread such as this one as much as the next guy, but it can only lead to madness.  You've been here awhile, so nevermind me or what I said earlier in the day in this paragraph.  (Read something incorrectly.)

Anything more I say will generally just be repeating what I've said so far, so I'll cease now.  Please, all the regulars, wake up before it's too late!

Yeah, just nevermind that.  Misread your profile.  Thought you were registered that day, obviously you weren't.  My bad.

That's to discourage others though!

One of my all time favorites is "Black Tiger".

Side scroller where you play a Barbarian and can buy different weapons (back when that wasn't a part of every game). We got so good at it, we could win the whole thing on 1 quarter.

Close.
You are a pig in a basket on a rope.  Wolves are using balloons to jump off a cliff safely to get at you piglets.   You need to shoot the balloons so they fall to their demise.

This suggested has recently turned my family into Tapper addicts. I never really liked this game in the arcade, but at home and with time to practice, it's becoming a favorite. The characters and music are really well done.

The lack of an authentic controller kinda sucks, but gameplay is still excellent despite that (hold button to tap, release to serve).
