What are the main difference in in functinoality between micros and leafs other than the clicking of the micros?  Do they last longer or are more reliable or anything like that?

What kind of price are we looking at for these switches...  I'm probably in for 18, maybe more depending on how cheap they are.  Is this a one-shot order?  We may need to stock up if so...

It's not a completely new idea (activating leafs using micro buttons), but the first easy implementation of it that I've ever seen.  I know that somebody has rigged leafs to be triggered in the same manner, but it involved little wooden blocks attached to the underside of the CP (I think) or some other way to put the ends of the leafs into the right place.

I think that was me, here:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=37034.msg328503#msg328503

Never got around to it.  This looks much easier-  I'll take a bunch when they're ready.

What you are looking at is a leafswitch that fits in a bracket that takes the same space as a micro switch in any Horizontal Button.

Please give me some feed back.  They will be ready to purchase in 7 - 10 days.

I will be posting more pic's.

Ponyboy

Please let us know the cost when you find out.  I might swap my whole panel for these if the price is right...

This may be a dumb question but thought I'd ask - can just the bottom leaf componet be used to replace a microswitch in a standard button? Or is the moulded plastic of the button itself different?

That's a good point. I probably don't, at least in my MAME cab. Still, I'll probably buy a handfull to use on a future project.

Oh, will they be compatible with Randys RGBDrive?

I might be wrong, but I don't think I am.

Based on the picture, I'm fairly certain that these won't work with the RGB-Drives.

The footprint is different from a standard micro.

Do we replace just our microswitches with this?  Or is this for the leaf switch AND the button?  Meaning the button isn't identical to a microswitch button...

Yes, you just replace your microswitch. It will work with existing horizontal pushbuttons.

It looks like there is a support structure under there.  Removing it might be bad/difficult.

Looks like these were made specifically for the button, rather than a generic micro replacement.  Which means, they probably wouldn't work for joys either.

Pure speculation here, but with the 'pins' portruding through the leaf gizmo, if those horizontal bits are supports they probably aren't bearing a lot of 'load.'  You might be able to get away without one side.

I don't think it would work with the RGB-Drive either.

These brackets were made specifically for the horizontal buttons.  They will not work on a joystick.  You cannot use the leafswitches for Wico sticks.

Like I said in my post above if everyone is interested if they will work on Randy's board I will send samples to Randy, no problem.  Randy just let me know.

Thanks,

I was just about to buy some leafs tranlucent buttons and since the colors were limited at 2 places, I was going to have to mix long and short ones. If they test to feel like my Leaf buttons I will be down for 20.

This is great - I detest the clicks on the buttons. With my P360's, I can have a nice quiet panel.

What kind of price are we looking at? It appears you will be selling a bazillion of these, so hopefully you get a bulk deal?

They are great, just what you expect. All the good points of a leaf switch with the convenience of a micro.
The ones i have came on an old cp i got for 4 pounds along with 2 joysticks.
Their getting a bit old now though.

I notice in that pic there is a plastic bit in between the switch and the actuator.  This makes it seem like these aren't adjustable like a regular leaf switch button...is this true?  It seems like there is maybe a 1/16 to 1/8 inch gap between the actuator on the button and the plastic bit of the leaf assembly.  I have heard some say that one reason they like leafs is they can adjust the the length of actuation to nothing.(I wouldn't personally comment as I have only installed microswitch before)  Anyway, I am going to try some kind of leaf on my next project so I am hoping you have some insight on these for my curiosity...
I will be buying some regardless though, so put me down for some ponyboy! quantity depends on price.

I am amazed that these were produced in the past and no one brought them back until now, really not even mentioned. They must be pretty damned rare.

Also, looking at that pic, I'll bet you could easily carve a pice of the white plastic away on the top left to make the RGB drive fit.   Oops, what Joymonkey said.

As has been said... search for microswitch and leaf. You'll learn a ton.  ;)

I had built 2 control panels before stumbling across the differences and I'll never go back. I always wondered why the Happ (joysticks) didn't feel like I remembered games from the 80's.

Essentially it comes down to two things.... noise and resistance. The microswitch noise I can live with, but the FEEL is completely different. With a leaf switch you don't feel the actuation. Sounds like a subtle difference but it is very noticeable.
