Leafswitches - Check this out!!!!!!!!
« on: February 01, 2006, 07:13:02 pm »
What you are looking at is a leafswitch that fits in a bracket that takes the same space as a micro switch in any Horizontal Button.

AVAILABLE NOW!!!!

Heh, sombody stole my idea ;)

I actually gave a drawing of something almost identical to this to a machine shop about 2 years ago.  But didn't think anyone would pay $3 to mount a $2 switch to 79 cent button.

Plastic changes the equation a bit.

As I said PB, you've got a WINNER here!

Match these with any of the translucent microswitch buttons available and you've got the best of both worlds.

I hafta say I'd be in for those too.  Depending on the price I'd be in for 12 or 24. I'd pay two bucks or so for them if they maintain the leaf 'feel.'

He's told me they will. The portion under the button is the same size as the microswitch it replaces...maybe you should get on these Randy? ;)

OK, now that is cool.  I wonder how I can return the buttons I just bought??? I assume there is no clicky clicky, since there are no microswitches...I was thinking of finding a way to do something similar for my joysticks...are you one up on me for that as well?

Was just thinking that with a little modification these could be used on the the Happ Ultimate/Comp joysticks. They would likely take up a fair amount of real estate under there but..

Could this be the end of all CP 'clicky-ness' as we know it??

Wow, this is really cool.  To be honest, the size doesn't matter.   ;)

I'm just psyched that there is a source for leafs.    :)
I won't use anything but.  Stupid question, do they feel or behave any differently because they are smaller?

Exactly what I was wondering mahsef!  It'd take up a bunch of room, but perhaps we'd start seeing more ideas on the swappable control panel front.

Oh sure, the day after I bought a bunch of translucent leafs that won't even fit into the holes of my metal CP and NOW you mention these!! :)

These are awesome, ponyboy!!  It's not a completely new idea (activating leafs using micro buttons), but the first easy implementation of it that I've ever seen.  I know that somebody has rigged leafs to be triggered in the same manner, but it involved little wooden blocks attached to the underside of the CP (I think) or some other way to put the ends of the leafs into the right place.

I was going to rig something along those lines but with the metal CP in my cocktail, it seemed like WAY too much trouble to even try to attach little risers to hold a leaf switch in the correct placement.

Put me down for some of these puppies!    YEAH!!!!!

And we have the first Mamey of the day.  These things are killer.   Thank the lovely and talented judges, these got one of the few 5/5 votes!  I'll add a link to the page tomorrow.

I'm seriously blown away by the brilliant simplicity for these.  Man, if only I was not so not smart I could have thunk up something like this! :)

I am so excited about these that I've probably clicked on this thread (and the picture in the first post) about 15 times!   This is really a great item that will make the cool new microswitch-only-buttons useable for an anti-microswitch/pro-leaf-button guy like me.   It's like Christmas!

YEAH!!!!!!!    Can I order yet?  :D

So whats the story on these?  Something you are having manufactured or is it some old stock item you came across that nobody has heard of?  I would assume the first option, but you seem to come across big lots of stuff that isn't made anymore...  ;)

I am glad everyone is Excited.  I can pull some good stuff out of my back pocket every once in a while.  This is an old idea.  I remember fumbling around with this idea back in the late 80's.  That was the time all the manufacturers were throwing leafswich devices in the trash by the tons.

I will keep you posted.

Awsome!!!!

Ponyboy, What will the cost be?

Randy, can you buy like a billion of these and then sell them as an option with the all inclusive button.

I think that  Ineed to hold off on the CP untill last. I keep wanting to start it but everytime I am about to throw down some $$$ something comes along and I gotta rethink the while thing.

Get some ICE with LED Drive with a leaf....SWEEEEEEEEET!

For people that don't understand the difference between the 2 switches, I thought I'll dig up an old thread on the topic.

--------------------------------------------------------
* Leaf switch vs. Microswitch:

Leaf switch = two thin parallel pieces of metal that are usually not in contact, but when one piece  is pressed against the other (by a button, or joystick) an electrical circuit is completed.  Older games (pre-90s) used leaf switches for most everything, but most modern arcade controls, for better or worse, use microswitches.

Microswitch = one piece of metal that is bent to spring into contact with a pole when pressure is applied to the middle.  If you want to see how one works, you'll have to take it apart, because these kinds of switches tend to be encased in plastic.  They are smaller and easier to maintain than leaf switches, but have a distinct click when engaged (unlike nearly-silent leaf switches).

I'm not too familiar with the ins and outs of leaf switches, but couldn't you use shorter blades to keep everything a little more compact? Or does the blade length directly affect the swithces response time?

Ahh, forget it Ponyboy......they'll never sale......

We hard-core BYOAC-ers either want clickerty-clack Cherry's OR those space consuming, never-the-right-size-for-your-CP-thicknes leafholders.

 :D

WHOHAAAHAHAHA what a great idea ! I love it !
This may be the rescue for us leaf-lovers !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recently had a nice and long chat with a long-time employee at Suzo's head office here in Holland, and he told me things are running thin on the leaf and button parts ! I actualy only could still get the expensive Tungsten holder assembly's and they even had to back-order those. No blue translucent buttons anymore too....

Anyway. I like what I see. Only question: will the smaller size of the leafs have an influence on the "feel". My guess is not too much....My only hope is that the leafs will be of Suzo/Happ quality, not the Chinese rubbish found elsewhere, but I guess Ponyboy wouldn't even think about it.

This once again prooves: the best ideas are the simplest :)

Also nice to be able to eliminate the last microswitches on my CP: 1P and 2P buttons

Plastic changes the equation a bit.
Plastic is a new development since 2 years ago?  ;)

No, but the low-cost availability of such an item from a company who has already spent the thousands in mold costs changes the price dynamic.
There also weren't too many companies out there offering short production runs on expendable, low-cost tooling then either. :)

It would have cost me $3 each to have them made from metal.  A plastic part this size would cost about 3 cents each in large quantities, excluding the actual switch, once the tooling was paid for.  That means a re-seller should be able to purchase them for less than a dollar.

I would have needed to sell a ton more than I could sell to this community in order to cover setup costs.  Makes it a lot easier to offer them at a reasonable cost if a manufacturer did all that already (assuming they did :) )

RandyT

BTW, here is the post where I mentioned such an adapter.  It was at that time when I investigated this.  Just so nobody thinks I'm pulling a "sour grapes " :)

What are the main difference in in functinoality between micros and leafs other than the clicking of the micros?  Do they last longer or are more reliable or anything like that?

What kind of price are we looking at for these switches...  I'm probably in for 18, maybe more depending on how cheap they are.  Is this a one-shot order?  We may need to stock up if so...

I think that was me, here:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=37034.msg328503#msg328503

Never got around to it.  This looks much easier-  I'll take a bunch when they're ready.

What you are looking at is a leafswitch that fits in a bracket that takes the same space as a micro switch in any Horizontal Button.

Please give me some feed back.  They will be ready to purchase in 7 - 10 days.

I will be posting more pic's.

Ponyboy

Please let us know the cost when you find out.  I might swap my whole panel for these if the price is right...

This may be a dumb question but thought I'd ask - can just the bottom leaf componet be used to replace a microswitch in a standard button? Or is the moulded plastic of the button itself different?

Oh, will they be compatible with Randys RGBDrive?

I might be wrong, but I don't think I am.

Based on the picture, I'm fairly certain that these won't work with the RGB-Drives.

The footprint is different from a standard micro.

Do we replace just our microswitches with this?  Or is this for the leaf switch AND the button?  Meaning the button isn't identical to a microswitch button...

Yes, you just replace your microswitch. It will work with existing horizontal pushbuttons.

It looks like there is a support structure under there.  Removing it might be bad/difficult.

Looks like these were made specifically for the button, rather than a generic micro replacement.  Which means, they probably wouldn't work for joys either.

Pure speculation here, but with the 'pins' portruding through the leaf gizmo, if those horizontal bits are supports they probably aren't bearing a lot of 'load.'  You might be able to get away without one side.

I don't think it would work with the RGB-Drive either.

These brackets were made specifically for the horizontal buttons.  They will not work on a joystick.  You cannot use the leafswitches for Wico sticks.

Like I said in my post above if everyone is interested if they will work on Randy's board I will send samples to Randy, no problem.  Randy just let me know.

Thanks,

What kind of price are we looking at? It appears you will be selling a bazillion of these, so hopefully you get a bulk deal?

I notice in that pic there is a plastic bit in between the switch and the actuator.  This makes it seem like these aren't adjustable like a regular leaf switch button...is this true?  It seems like there is maybe a 1/16 to 1/8 inch gap between the actuator on the button and the plastic bit of the leaf assembly.  I have heard some say that one reason they like leafs is they can adjust the the length of actuation to nothing.(I wouldn't personally comment as I have only installed microswitch before)  Anyway, I am going to try some kind of leaf on my next project so I am hoping you have some insight on these for my curiosity...
I will be buying some regardless though, so put me down for some ponyboy! quantity depends on price.

I am amazed that these were produced in the past and no one brought them back until now, really not even mentioned. They must be pretty damned rare.

Also, looking at that pic, I'll bet you could easily carve a pice of the white plastic away on the top left to make the RGB drive fit.   Oops, what Joymonkey said.

As has been said... search for microswitch and leaf. You'll learn a ton.  ;)

I had built 2 control panels before stumbling across the differences and I'll never go back. I always wondered why the Happ (joysticks) didn't feel like I remembered games from the 80's.

Essentially it comes down to two things.... noise and resistance. The microswitch noise I can live with, but the FEEL is completely different. With a leaf switch you don't feel the actuation. Sounds like a subtle difference but it is very noticeable.

What is the average frequency of having to adjust leaf switches?  I know it's probably based on how much they are used, but I'm wondering how often I need to open my CP to tweak.

Not often. Really. Unless you are an arcade operator with a room full of leafswitch machines. Then it'll feel like you are constantly adjusting them.

I've never had to adjust my leaf switches on my cabs. Ditto for my electro-mechanical pinball machine... it's got hundreds of leafswitches, and I've never had to adjust them... had to clean some of them when I first got the machine, but not adjust them.

I've never had to adjust any leaf switches. I guess my cabs just don't get enough use to need any adjustment.

Looking at the pictures it's hard to see why these wouldn't work on at least some of the microswitch joysticks out there.

I can tell by looking at them that it's liable to take a lot of hacking to make them work together, and in the end, it might be a shaky solution.

Probably better off left as an end-user modification.

Hi Ponyboy,

I'll take that smooth "Old School" feel of a leafswitch over a microswitch any day! I'd be interested in purchasing at least 25 of them. Please let me know when they're available.

Thanks,

Update, I was able to mod my Ponyboy Leaf Bracket to work with the RGB-Drive in a clear FXbutton.  I will post a quick how-to tomorrow, but I basically needed to drill a hole in the button for the LED, then take a utility knife to the leaf switch bracket.  Took me about 2 mins.  The integrity of the bracket seems just fine after the mod.

I must say this arrangement kicks ass.  YMMV.

Pure speculation here, but with the 'pins' portruding through the leaf gizmo, if those horizontal bits are supports they probably aren't bearing a lot of 'load.'  You might be able to get away without one side.

I don't think it would work with the RGB-Drive either.
Unless you took a knife to the top of the fixture (where the RGB-Drive gets installed) here...

It looks like there is a support structure under there.  Removing it might be bad/difficult.

Looks like these were made specifically for the button, rather than a generic micro replacement.  Which means, they probably wouldn't work for joys either.

I got some of these leaf switches the other day and just hooked one of them up.  Man, it's pretty freakin' cool.

And, for those who spend time 'tweaking' their leafs, I'll just say that the leaf-action is pretty tight right out of the gate.  The contacts are already pretty close together so you can get that rapid-fire tapping with no problem.

There is still a slightly different 'feel' to the buttons themselves.   I'm guessing it's a combination of (a) the spring in a microswitch button versus the spring in a leaf button and (b) the fact that microswitch button-plungers sit lower in the bezel than leaf buttons do.   But there's no doubt that the micro-buttons with these leafs can give you that rapid non-clicky leafy goodness that you might be missing.

Good stuff!

Do you think its harder because of those plastic "leafs" around the switch or because the leaf switch is shorter...or both?
Did you try removing the buttons spring to lighten the feel?

Interesting, bossyman.  I felt like it was the spring in the micro that was causing the difference in the feel.  But I haven't pulled the spring out to test that theory.

Perhaps clipping the top piece of plastic would help (although you might then have to tweak the leafs up closer to the button 'activation point')    But yeah, the microswitch-buttons don't have the loose feel of the real leaf-buttons.  And I do think the 'height' of the plunger plays a part in that as well.  I use a more pronounced "smash" when I hit my leafs.

I also found them a bit hard to press, not as loose as the original leafs on my 720 and so I clipped the top piece of plastic and it feels great.  Instead of bending the contacts up to meet the button actuator, I just glued the clipped piece onto the top actuator.

This probably doesn't make sense unless I post a picture or you have one of the leafswitches in hand.

Cheers,

Check out the Retroblast review!!!
Ponyboy

Good review, but... Kevin James, why chop off original parts?!?! All you needed were two pushbuttons. Bob sells them. Why go buy the microswitch style?!?!?

*sigh*

The Retroblast review was done by James and he didn't modify the leaf brackets at all.  He mentioned that he already had the translucent microswitch buttons on hand, though.

ponyboy has a 'sticky' in the B/S/T forum.  There are instructions in there on how to order these, and other things, from him.   The gist of it is: (1) PM him with what you want (2) get a price quote back (3) send him PayPal (4) receive your items.

That would be $4.32 per... and you're going to want at least 12 for a 2 player panel for a total cost of about $52.00.

I am wondering if these would fit our Ultralux buttons: http://www.ultimarc.com/ultralux.php?to=11goto=1
If so, can we be a reseller?

I just tried to put one on an Ultralux button and the two tabs at the end near the leaf switch contacts prevent it from going all the way down.  :(

What's the word on these things ponyboy?

I'm thinking about get a set of them for my Pop'N Music controller.  Does anyone happen to know if they will work in a JUMBO DOME button from HAPP?
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen
