Laminates vary abit in price depending on the thickness and style, but doing it ya self is definately the cheaper option to go with.. (thats if ya dont stuff it up) hehehe
The only real problem with laminates is that they are very tricky to work with, as they fracture and crack easily, and there are special techinques required to work to cut it up, and also to finish the final edges and corners where they meet up with other edges. ...
Basically cutting up laminate sheets is very similar to how you would cut glass ..
You require a special tool that has a sharp bit on the end of it, (fairly cheap to buy) and you have to run it along the edge of a ruler and score the laminate, making a groove along where you want to cut and seperate the laminate into two individual peices.
Once the laminate has been scored you then have to put the laminate on the edge of a desk or table and press down and apply pressure to it and snap it in two....
The score (groove) basically creates a weak stress point, and if done right the laminate breaks and snaps cleanly into two peices..
Cutting is the tickest part of laminating as if you dont score the laminate properly, or deep enough, or you put too much pressure in the wrong spot when you go to snap it, the laminate will crack and fracture through the sheet, essentially ruining it ...
If anyone is going to try laminating id really recommend you go to a supplier first and see if you can get a cheap or damaged offcut from them and take it home and practice on it first, as there is abit of an art to it all and is alot harder than what many people would think.
