Now to do the same and make it something like Galaga instead.

sure man, give it a shot! There's nothing Windows XP-ie about it so I don't see why it shouldn't work.  I just uploaded a new version that slows it down a bit so it should be easier on slower CPUs. Also, I played around with the AI a bit to make it look less like a computer. Lastly, I added a couple config params to let you customize things at different resolutions.

I'd like to work on the AI a little more to make it look like it's losing "by accident". Also, I'd like to get it working with DirectX so I can make it window-less and let you use it as a background on your 2000/XP desktop. Hmmm..

It's a good intro to allegro if you're looking to get aquainted.. check it out.. ask questions..

Hmm.. How would that work?  You'd only be able to kill a bug once a minute and each bug would be only 1 point? Then you still have the numbers in the high score column in the way..

make the bugs form the numbers for the time, every minute they fly down and then re-assemble as the new time.  there would of course be bugs added/subtracted.  would make for a fun clock.   the time in galaga bugs just moving back and forth, reassembling every minute as the time.

I have no idea how to do that, but if you can make a pong clock...you could do this!!

Make the high score to be the date.  Todays highscore = 03272006

source should compile in dos.. I don't have the instructions handy, nor have i tested it but I dont see why it shouldnt work with the standard dos mame compile environment. check it out and let me know if it works. :)

I've compiled it in linux without a problem..

Yeah but I'd have to only kill one bug a minute to keep the time. that seems kind of boring :) I like NY_in_TX's idea.. It looks like I'm gonna have to clear the dust off my geometry and trig books to make it happen though. yikes!

Making the highscore the date would be doable no matter which way the clock was implemented though...

Two things...

1. the animation of the "ball" is not so great.  it looks as though there's two of 'em

2. the "ball" somehow got stuck behind the right player's paddle and was bouncing between that and the "goal" for like 15 seconds or so

Lookin good though!
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

That's pretty cool.  I agree that the ball looks like two.  I LIKE how the paddles don't start moving until the ball is in their court.  Makes it look more like there are real people playing.

Okay, I played around with the ghosting ball thing.. check it out and let me know how much it messes up your computer.

I'm not sure how the ball got stuck.. I changed a couple things around that may have fixed it (but I doubt it). I'll see if I cam make it happen.

I'm getting the same exact error!  I've tried changing the resolution & color depth (32-bit down to 16-bit) to no avail.

You're using "screensaver mode", right? I found a bug that occures when screensaver is set to yes (I had height and width reversed when I was getting the current height and width. doh!  ::) I just thought it was me because my laptop uses a non 4:3 resolution).

I just uploaded the fixed version.

The ball looks better now on my PC.  A little jumpy once and awhile.

Seems like it has a little "trail", like a mouse trail, very faint though.

Not sure about free dos.  From past experience with it seems standard to me.  Not sure what version of dos I use on the pic frame I built, probably what was left over after deleting win 95.  Almost picked up another old lap top off ebay yesterday for $20 just to make another set up just to run this but decided to wait till next month.

Also when the ball got stuck I was not using screen saver mode.  If it will work in dos I will edit the bat to launch the exe on startup so I don't have to type the command line each power up. Thanks.

screaming,

What did you code your clock in?  Is it something that could be used with that basic stamp chip that was discussed earlier?  That would be cool to get that going (seems a waste to get a whole computer just to run a clock, would be nice to figure out how to run it with basic stamp and cheap little lcd).

it's "mostly" c, but technically c++. Converting it to c should be a no brainer.. are basic stamp chips fast enough?

You both need to go into the config file and change one of two things.  Change either the option that says full screen to yes, or change the resolution to a lower setting.  while in windowed mode, the window is actually larger than 1024x768 and it doesn't know how to stretch or resize itself.

At least that's what my problem was.

Oh, it uses Allegro too, which I highly doubt is THAT portable ;) I literally built it in a matter of hours so I don't see how it can really be all the difficult.  I'm not a PIC programmer though :)

I did a quick google search for pic pong games and found the following:

http://dt.prohosting.com/pic/pong.html

http://www.rickard.gunee.com/projects/video/pic/pong.php

The first one looks most promising as it seems to deal with interfacing it to a video source (but maybe the second one deals with that too, I'm not sure).  I am not a pic programmer either, but I wonder how hard it would be to modify the code that is available on these sites and then hook it up to a cheap lcd.

Just out of curiosity, what size display do you guys think this would need to work as a standalone clock?  Would  7.5 inch diag be big enough? Too small/big?

Would it matter if it was your standard 'black dots on greenish background' lcd  look or would it need to be black and white?

This might be exactly the project I've been looking for to take up more of my time that I dont really have!  I can do the code and hardware (most likely on a AVR microcontroller, just cause I have some laying around), the real limiting factor is the cost of a display panel.  I found some surplus monochrome 7.5" lcd's for pretty cheap (these are lo res graphic LCD modules. Think black dots.)  If this sounds interesting to you guys, I'll go ahead and get some and see what shakes loose.  If you think it really needs to be larger, or needs to be black and white for the retro feel, I'll wait until I find a better display panel.

Let me know what you think.

Koz

Ok so I MUST be bored or something.... but for all you freaks out there that REALLY want to have a pong clock and are thinking of converting a PC of some weird sort to do it...  http://www.screeq.com/view.php?week=11     radioactive friggin green on black! lets talk screen burn (not to mention retnal burn) from hell! It's a screensaver that does random games and tells the current time.

I found this in my odd ramblings around the internet in a fluke of nature.... I have it, its cool, but I don't think im going to be replacing my normal screensaver with it.
Now if I happen to come across a sugar of a deal of a tablet or laptop thats totally useless, I'd think about it.

Build it and they will come, destroy it and they will come to watch. That's a win/win situation!

Gonzo, I compiled it but I don't have my DOS box handy and it doesn't seem to want to run in XP for me.  So with the caveat that this is untested, go to http://webpages.charter.net/celamantia/pongclk.zip to check it out.

Hey Thanks Chris!   :applaud:
Just tried your compile on my laptop pic frame and get error 800x600 not supported.  I think I can only suport 640x480.  I have no idea how to change the resolution.  Not sure if it can be set prior to compile?

Glancing through the code it looks like it will run at 640x480 but I need to change it in the code.  I'm not at my home PC right now; I'll try it when I get there.

Do you know if you have a color depth restriction?

Thanks, very nice of you.  I do not know if I have depth restriction.  I use a dos program called lxpic to display my jpegs with no problems, they are all converted to 640x480.  The error I got when I tried the first compile was,
height 600
width 800 depth 32
and got errer, resolution not supported.
So my guess is the depth was fine, don't know for sure.
Thanks Again
