Need help with defective Happ Control Super joysticks.
« on: January 27, 2003, 11:50:41 pm »
I finished my control panel today. Put the hinges on and then installed all the buttons. I wired up my DC controller hack and everything works... sort of.

The joysticks are defective. I thought they where the moment I saw them, and tonight I confirmed it  :-\  The little nob on the bottom that the stick goes through is to short. When I push the stick the nob goes UNDER the switch and doesn't click it, thusly the joystick only partially works and is unplayable.

Im not talking about the joystick being to short, it isn't. I mean the actual little nob thing that is part of the bottom half of the joystick component.

Does anyone know how I can fix this.  I will be eternally gratefull if you do.  :'(

Are you talking about the metal shaft being too short?

If so, how do you have these mounted and into what (metal / wood / thickness)?

You mean the actuator (green) is missing the microswitches?  Be sure that the conical spacer (red) is in place, as well as the other components as shown on the Happ exploded view.  Can you see if your joystick is missing any components?

3/4" plywood. Not routed, no plexiglass.

Well I dont get it. I bought 2 super joysticks, only one of them came with the 2 smaller bushings. The other one only came with the large one.

Ive tried every combination of those little pegs I can think of, exactly like it shows in those pics, and it still isn't working properly. I got it working a little better, but its still not functioning on all angles and directions in a reliable way.

Do you have a digital camera? Is there anyway you can take a few pictures of it?  Maybe we can spot something?

The digital camera hasn't been working lately, so I cant post any pics.

Ive been working steady on wiring this for 6 hours, so I think ill take the rest of the night off and look at it again in the morning. Maybe im just making some dumb mistake and ill find it then.

Are the super joysticks supposed to be really short? Because if I assemble it like it shows in the pics the stick is very short. And im only going through 3/4" plywood nothing more.

Anyway, im going to take a break till morning.

*shoots himself in the head*

Stupid stupid mistake on my part. I was putting that little sorta cone shapped piece in the wrong spot, and the buttom wasn't on tight enough as a result also.

Anyway its working fine now.  ;D I think I had just been working on it for so long that my mind had gone to mush. The whole control panel works AWESOMELY! I love it! I cant wait till the rest of the cabinet is done! Playing all my Dreamcast 2d fighters with this is going to be a blast!

I still have one problem though. Happ did short me on parts for the second joystick. So do I just call there customer service and they'll send me those parts or what? Otherwise I have to buy a whole new stick just for those little plastic parts.

Glad to hear you got it solved!  Sometimes a rest/break is all you need to figure something out..
