Looking for something to organize all my games....
« on: November 26, 2005, 04:43:36 pm »
Ok so I've been collecting games for the past 3-4 years and I got a BUNCH of them (2500+). All abandonware/freeware/shareware/demos ect. Problem is I didn't start out with a good plan on organizing them and I think I'm starting to double up on some of them.

What I need is a way to organize them. They all are on hard drives or CD's or DVD's (even some floppies). Some of them are .zip or .rar or .exe whatever. Another prob is the same game may have a slightly different file name. ie: "dmaster.zip" or "dunmaster.zip".

Does anyone have any idea how I might fix this mess? I have Excel but don't know much about it or even if that would be a solution. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem when I used to collect games for my Atari 800.  I didn't have anything on a hard drive at the time, it was all floppies.  SO, I numbered each disk and got a database program.  The database program allowed me to type any info I wanted about a specific file, into sortable fields, including file name, disk number, size, date, program name, etc. and also had a field where I could type anything else I wanted like a description of the game, my own rating system, whatever.  To locate anything, I could use the handy search feature and search on any of the fields, or even pull up every record that had the word "dungeon" in the description fields.  This would solve your problem.  I don't know if you can find a shareware database program or not.

You've got a couple of options available to you.
