Golden Axe Button Layout Question
« on: November 16, 2005, 01:56:37 pm »
Hi There,

Does anyone know what the original button layout is for Golden Axe?

After a lot of googling, I can see that the 3 button layout is  'OOO', however I don't know which is  button 1, 2 or 3, or which button does which move.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Olaf

From Controls.ini -

[goldnaxe]
gamename=Golden Axe (set 6, US, 8751 317-123A)
numPlayers=2
alternating=0
mirrored=1
tilt=0
cocktail=0
usesService=0
miscDetails=
P1NumButtons=3
P1Controls=8-way Joystick+joy8way
P1_BUTTON1=Attack
P1_BUTTON2=Jump
P1_BUTTON3=Magic
P1_JOYSTICK_RIGHT=Right
P1_JOYSTICK_LEFT=Left
P1_JOYSTICK_DOWN=Down
P1_JOYSTICK_UP=Up

See image below:  (I'm going to guess and say these are:

                  Magic
         Attack           Jump

But this might be a conversion, so it would be nice if someone actually remembered.

That layout above is the "correct" layout for ALL games that have jump, attack and a special attack.

Hmm, that makes it tricky. Actually I am planning on building a dual '8-way joystick 3 buttons' panel for use with Golden Axe, Double Dragon, etc, but it appears that the layout is slightly different.

Double Dragon is:   Punch (B3) Jump (B2) Kick (B1)

Golden Axe is: Attack (B1)  Magic (B3)  Jump (B2)

Which is completely different (in both number and function). However, if I went for a 1 2 3 configuration, then it would be:

Double Dragon: Kick Jump Punch
Golden Axe:  Attack Jump Magic

which seems like it could work well, because the Jump is in the same location, and Kick/Attack is sort of similar. Opinions and feedback appreciated.

Personally, I would remap Double Dragon's keys so that it's:
           Kick
Punch          Jump

or

       Punch
Kick            Jump

and leave Golden Axe as is.

I would follow the Golden Axe layout, because you will be compatible with a much greater number of platform games that way (Rygar, Black Tiger, Rolling Thunder, Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Strider, etc, etc, etc)

With that layout, you keep your index finger hovered over B1, and your middle finger over B2, and then you only move your hand up to smash the "special skill" button (B3).

Then for DD, just remap the inputs.

Actually the challenge that I have is that the cabinet is a custom-built JAMMA cabinet for use with both MAME and arcade PCB's (I already have Double Dragon, and am looking for Golden Axe) - so remapping keys is only an option for MAME and not the PCB's - which is why I was looking for the most usable common config.

Thanks for all the responses.

Ah. Maybe quick-disconnects on all your button wires will help. If you can take the time to swap a PCB, then you shouldn't have a problem with the extra 5 seconds it takes to swap 2 wires.

PS: I hope you know that Golden Axe is a Sega System 16 board and will require a JAMMA adaptor.
