Is there such a cabinet as this?
« on: November 05, 2005, 08:02:41 pm »
Hey Guys,
I have been away from the scene for awhile and starting to think about making a new cabinet. However this is something new i had in mind. My wife and I live in a small house and I can not make a full size well i can but the cabinet cant be "flashy" or "kiddish". I was trying to think of a way to make a bartop cabinet but so it looks like a piece of furniture??? like stained and molded?? or in put a cabinet in some sort of cabinet...so it can be hidden when others attended to my home?? is there anything like this? any ideas suggestions???? HEHE i see it now VictorianCab ehehehhe

thx

I've definitely seen a couple.  At least one that's basically hidden in some kind of cabinet and another that looks like a coffee table.   I'll see if I can search them up for you.

This is mine;

Don't mind the messy basement. Hammerite spray paint is what I used to give the coin door textured bronze feel.

Are you familiar with the old sewing machines that looked like just a tall table when closed but opened up (transformer style) to be a complete with machine sewing table?

You can still have a full upright and have it look pretty.

See the Galaxian conversion on my site:

Or CmdrTaco's Jubei cab (which I don't have a link handy for, but it's on his site).

Hey
The sewing machine HEHEEH i was actually thinking of that hehe....my wife sews....ehhee,,our home decor is old school or victorian so it has to fit in somehow.....

those cabinets that are stained etc..are nice but it still stands out like a cabinet when not in use..I am trying to find a way to have a nice cabinet when i wish to play..but when not its hidden or looks like it fits in. I suppose I could make a cabinet and have the arcade pull out? but when being used I wish it to look like a cabinet and not just some buttons hooked up to a tv....geez this is weird/hard! ehehehe thanks for the posts..kleep the suggestions coming..i greatly appreciate them

You could just build a stained box that covers your cabinet and remove it when you play. :)

Hey
That is true.. a box around it hmm...
I do like the idea of making it secret very cool...so ppl do no know what it is..oh is that a linen closet ?? ehehe nope an arcade! hehe...problem is the box is going to have to be um...stylish..victorian with moldings etc...lots of work.

Whats the estimated size for a medium sized stand up cabinet\?? my first two were rather large and I would like a smaller one... I may make a bartop.... any plans around for boxes?

You might consider a cocktail cabinet.  The nice thing is it could look like an arcade game, but if you throw a nice tablecloth over it, it just looks like a coffee table.

FWIW.

A Hidden Door / Bookshelf that slides away!  That would be so cool!

Found this company that specializes in building them:  http://www.hiddendoors.com/

And this guy who did something similar: http://pervivere.blogspot.com/2005/09/holly-shelf-unit-batman.html

I'd definitely go for a cocktail style cab. I don't know what's going on in the US but Lots of flashy bars over here (UK) are doing like lounge areas and retro cocktail cabs are back in a big way. Even if an upright cab is finished to a high standard it looks way more expensive and cooler than a pine wardrobe.

Total class. No tackiness involved! just needs someone to build one!

Somewhere I've got a bunch of sketches of ideas for a cab based on some Greene and Greene furniture.  I was looking at something like a slope front desk (which is like a roll top desk with a solid panel instead of the rolling bit).

All the arcady bits and a flat screen monitor would be hidden behind the slope when you weren't using it as an arcade game.  With a little engineering you could set up dual desk tops, one you CP and one flat, so that when you didn't want to defend the last human family (or whatever) you could unplug the cp, tuck it down into the body of the thing and put the flat desk top there to use as a computer desk.

I made the J-Rcade with the idea of it looking classy and more "furniture-like", although mine doesn't really fit into the idea of being hidden. Just blends better with the other furniture in the room. I also live in an apartment (for now, we finally got approved for a loan, so it's a house soon and hopefull a racing sit-down cab...  :D) so I had to make something small enough to put away or take to a friend's house.
