Real slick looking.

Controller and the buttons translucent blue? Nice subtle contrast.

I like it!  All that black & chrome trim reminds me of a '59 Caddy.

Just add some tail fins and a rear view mirror to hang your fuzzy dice to your cocktail, and you are set!  ;)

Seriously, very cool idea!

I've seen them here members.aol.com/n2new/percussion.htm, but there may be other places.

so no vertical games?? I'm assuming there is a CP on the other side for player 2? switching seats on a cocktail game is a pain in the butt..  I love the design though!

Yeah there will be vertical games on there, but its just geared towards horizontals. There is another CP on the other side for two player (alternative turn) games.

I'm also toying with the ideal of making the second cp removable on a cable so it can be used as a hand/lap controller on the other side for two player simultaneous games. But I think I may drop this feature as I want the cabinet to look as professional as possible and not that I

I love the look of that - definately one of the sleekest cabs ever designed.  It's something that won't stick out in a living room.

If I ever finish my upright (slow going -- I'm pathetic with a circular saw and money's a little tight right now) I'm definately aiming for a cocktail for my next project.  So when you work on this, let us know how it goes, as it's defintely an inspirational piece.

Hm.. so you're going to have one CP on only one of the vertical sides?  But when you put vertical games in cocktail mode they flip when they alternate between players.. it just seems like doing it this way kills half the charm/authenticity of having a cocktail..?

Oh, well.. real cocktails don't generally have control panels on adjoining sides either, I guess :P.. as a plus, I'm thinking it would slide into a corner nicely.

PS, though it looks like it would blend in well in a home environment as is.. LOL, that thing looks like a generic video poker with the gold t-molding and no art :o

Nope never side that, both the CPs are on opposite horizontal sides. And as I said in my original post this cocktail cabinet is aimed at horizontal games (and those that are 2-player alternative turn will flip).

Oh, well.. real cocktails don't generally have control panels on adjoining sides either, I guess :P.. as a plus, I'm thinking it would slide into a corner nicely.

Again never said that (which thread have you been reading?).  ::)

Gold t-molding? Nope its chrome as mentioned above. There is some art, just very simple,  I would have thought it would have fitted in a home environment if it comes out like illustrated above, a bright coloured cabinet with several multi-coloured characters plastered over it won

I love it.  Looks killer.
My upright cocktail was going to look alot like that.  As I was building I realized I didn't like looking down and found the upright position suited me better.
Again, beautiful concept.

Woops!  You're right, I didn't see all those captions.. must have been blinded by all that gold t-molding ::)

Still, though, now I'm stumped.. no vertical games.. on a cocktail.. head.. pressure.. immense hurting..

But seriously, I can't think of any horizontal games that alternate like that either.. I don't recall ever playing any horizontal cocktail games in the wild, at any rate, and never had interest to check MAME.  Have you checked MAME on that one?  How many are there? ???

A lot of the mid 80s conversion games had dip settings for single or dual controls, cocktail or upright. But, a lot of those games were vertical.

Only horizontal cocktail I ever saw in the wild was an Asteroids.

What I am wondering about is the six button layout. The only 6 button games are two player simultaneous fighters, which are not suited for that cabinet.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I'm not going to be building this cocktail to appeal to the masses, its for running some of my personal favs, which in this case are mid-eighties horizontals. But just because its a horiztontal setup doesn't mean vertical games can't be played  ::)

I remember that when I used to play Wonder Boy and Shinobi on a cocktail cab they were setup to flip, not sure if that was a hack but I guess it could be done in Mame also.

What I am wondering about is the six button layout. The only 6 button games are two player simultaneous fighters, which are not suited for that cabinet.

Putting six buttons on the player one panel just gives the option of playing a few other games if the mood takes me.  :)

True.. I just can't stand scaled vertical games anymore.. not sure when it happened, it just looks too weird on account of the scanline orientation.  I've been hanging around my restoration projects and arcades again too much :-X

In retrospect, though, I suppose horizontal games on a vertical monitor would be much worse :P

The only horizontal games I know that flip for player two are: defender / stargate / robotron / bubbles. But the way these games enabled cocktail mode was by removing "W-1" jumper from the interface board. I don't know how mame would be able to emulate this feature. ???

I'm sure there are many more horizontal games that flip for cocktail mode than just those, how about Rally X, Missile Command (though no spinner on this cabinet) Moon Patrol, River Patrol, Berzerk, Track and Field and Wonder Boy just to name a few.

Nothing as yet, In fact I've not been able to make any progress on my upright either. In the middle of moving house at the moment so the projects have gone on hold. But the good news is that the new place will have an area were I can work on this stuff when ever I want so things will speed up loads. At the moment I have to unpack tools etc each time I want to do anything.

I'm annoyed that you're passing this design off as your own, both in these forums and on your website. You could at the very least fully acknowledge the real source of your 'inspiration'.

You're off to a really good start at BYOAC....  already threatening legal action on someone who liked the look of your cab and wanted to make his own?

Nice that you have a link to ROM sites.  Oh and I'm sure that picture of the gal in the Union Jack bikini you took yourself and didn't find on the internet right?

Thanks for the comments  :), really wish I could work on my projects but the lack of a workshop and the weather here means nothing is getting done at the moment. Hopefully shouldn't be too long until we move into our new place where I'll have a fulltime workshop for this sort of stuff.  ;D

Afraid not, the house move has taken longer than expected, had a buyer drop out on us  >:(. But all back on track now and should be in the new place mid-end Jan and looking forward to a full-time workshop.

Also got a baby on the way now (Yet other cash consuming project!) so I'm planning to get the cabinets finished asap before the little one arrives.  ;D

I spotted a nice set in B&Q a while back, in fact they had quite a few different crome ones so I don't think it will be too hard sourcing the.

Also just noticed my last post where I said I would be moved by mid-end Jan, LOL i wish, still waiting to move. I tell you once I finally do move I won't be doing it again in an hurry, I've had so many complications you wouldn't believe.  :-\
