I'm not supposed to have started yet......

I brought home some scrap wood the other day from one of my jobsites and it was just sitting in my garage.

I left about a 1/4 inch on either side and at top and bottom to be trimmed after application.

Then I cut my control panel top.

I used some templates provided by some generous BYOAC folks (Pointdablame and Markrvp)

I started by marking the horizontal and vertical centerlines on the CP top. Then I measured and drew out the box dimensions that would be underneath. This way I know I won

Then I moved my templates around until I felt comfortable with everything. I then took a small finishing nail to center punch each of my holes.

I used Forstner drill bits and a makeshift drill press to keep the holes clean and true. I even drilled out a 3/4" circle for each of the mounting screws for the joysticks so that I can flush mount my T-nuts.

Controls from left to right:

Happ 49 way with rotary adapter (thank you fl0yd)
7 Happ horizontal push buttons - top row blue, bottom row black
Happ Tulip style Topfire Super Joystick
Happ 3" Translucent Blue Trackball flush mounted under artwork
SlikStik Tornado spinner (w/ a 2.5 - 3" top taken from a 1970s x-ray jog dial)

I'm planning on putting, player start and coin buttons on a panel or on the bezel between the monitor and the control panel. I've got an extra IPAC2 that will be dedicated to the cabinet for admin/coin door while the player controls will be handled by swapable panels.

I'm planning
1 - 49way 2 player panel as descibed above.
1 - Guantlet style 4 player with 4 eightway supers and no trackball or spinner
who knows after that....... we'll see what I have left.

Poll.

Laminate or just spray paint the "box" for the control panel.

The rest of the UAII cabinet will be black Wilsonart formica But I'm not sure if I can justify the purchase of the 4x8 sheet of $38 formica to the miniboss for just this little box.

Also, I have the spray paint. (cause I'm a hardcore tagger and a bad asssk M.C.)

For me, I opted to paint the actual top of the CP and for the sides of the box, I went with the vinyl laminate from Parts Express:

I just ordered a roll. great idea. Did you prime before applying the vinyl? And then what, you apply with a little sticking off each side and then trim it after?

I didn't prime, but you probably could. I was concerned that the prime might come loose, although I doubt that would happen.

Yes, you can do it with some sticking off of each side and then trim with a sharp razor blade to fit.

A word of caution, take your time, and do you best to keep it straight. Once this stuff sticks, it sticks something fierce.

**Update Regarding TEE NUT adhesive**

I was worried about my Tee Nuts popping out after I put on my CPO. I think the teeth hold pretty well but I want to be sure this thing will last a long time. Earlier I had mentioned using Liquid Nails. I realized that stuff was only for wood and a few other things, not metal.

I did some searching at my local hardware store and I came up with this stuff.

Gorilla Glue. It works REALLY well. I dont know if it will last 50 years or not but it sure bonds. A little drop 'll do ya, for sure.

Note: let it dry overnite or longer before you go over the top with wood putty it expands or bubbles out. I let it dry, then broke off the "bubbles" or excess and it was fine.

Nice work there. I can't wait to see the controls installed. I know it's the last step, although I always hate waiting until the very end to be able to actually play the thing.

Because I'm planning on using the rotary adapter from fl0yd on my 49ways I have to have a DEEP control panel box. 5" at the front to 6" at the back.

Thats wayyyy too big. We'll I built it. I hope I'll still have room for that "admin panel" I was talkin' about.

I have some sanding to do to get everything tight on that coffin.

I primed the CP top also. I started by sanding down all my gobs of wood putty. Then patching with more wood putty and sanding again.

Then I coated with 2 coats of latex primer, sanded, then hit it with one more coat and sand paper again for a 400 grit smooth finish

photo one is after mineral spirits (still drying) photo two is after 2 coats of primer. I am VERY pleased with the smooth results. Maybe tomorrow I will put on the CPO. But I dont want to rush it.

Actually, I went nuts last night and installed the CPO and the controls

I'll take a picture and post it later tonight. It looks REALLY NEAT. I couldn't be happier with the results.

Hey Timoe,

Nice work. I think the topfires were a great idea. Your CP looks a lot like my own standalone CP, except that you have done clearly superior woodwork and I really have noticed that the topfires would come in handy in several games. Also, no trackball for me. My fiancee already despises the hugeness of my standalone CP

I have been delayed ... severely.

My wife finally caught on to what I've been 'working' on in the garage. She was disgusted by the size of the cp. Mainly because we have a "game room" as she calls it and the plan was to put the machine in there.

HINT: be sure and discuss the size and scope of your project with your significant others or roommates or whatever before you begin construction. It looks like my shop/garage is going to be getting a LOT cleaner someday becaue thats where my UAII will be going.

Also, I've got about 10 more projects stacked on my plate now before I can get back to the UAII, ...paint the house, change out the switches and outlets, new plumbing fixtures, stair rails, entertainment unit, and the list goes on.....

Update on the CP.
I did install the Parts Express black vinyl to the sides of the box.
I installed Rubber non slip feet on the bottom of the box to raise it off the ground or any table top surfaces.
I installed the Game Pad and Keyboard interfaces and got 80% of the wiring done.
Everything works GREAT, but I haven't started cleaning up the wiring yet. I will try and post pics of the gory guts later this weekend.

Here's the desktop control panel I'll be working with for the next few months until I can start up construction again. Its a "Pelican Real Arcade Stick" I'm sure many of you have seen/owned them.

I took the top off of mine and used a flush trim bit on my router to cut an idetical top. I used some extra t-molding and Parts Express vinyl I had lying around. I'm having problems with the IPAC and my wiring job but maybe I'll get a multimeter (after I paint the living room) later today and try to figure it out.

I'll probably swap out the joystick handles with blue aluminum bats or red aluminum balltops from slikstik until I build a real control panel for them.

Here is a pic showing the side of my control panel's box. Where the pinball flippers are. I decided to put my player start and coin buttons here. The black button is for the 49ways "joy button"

I was worried that I would not be able to have my admin panel on the cabinet so I decided to stash a couple of buttons on the under side of the control panel. Three on each side.

Well then I wanted to wire the thing up and if I'm working on a flat surface these bottom buttons will be depressed. So I decided that I would mount feet under there that are just about 3/16" taller than the buttons

Well, I'll be destroying the arrtwork to tear out the Trackball mounting plate and I'll be removing all the controls and the Piano hinge for future use.

Put the thing on the Buy/Sell/Trade forums and see what you could get for it.

There are plenty of people on here who can figure out the computer stuff, and the wiring/ soldering, but couldn't woodwork themselves out of a paperbag (note: I'm talking about myself here).
