Happs competition joystick
« on: April 07, 2005, 02:52:00 pm »
I know I should probably go with 4/8 way switchable joysticks for my control panel, but I just saw an offer for almost all the buttons I'll need plus two Happs competition joysticks at a price that's just right for me. But the big dillemma is wether or not it's worth giving up the 4/8 way switchability to save a good ammount money? Or should I just hold off and be patient for a better deal?

If I where only going to have one control panel.. and one joystick per player.

I would go with the happs 49way + the GP49wiz board (and wait for the new version with software switching).

The joysticks are on sale for 20 bucks each.  Everyone is saying great things about it in 4way, 8way and all the other modes.

Seems like the best all around solution at the moment.

Are you talking about one of those eBay bundles? If so, I've heard very bad things about them... At least make sure the buttons are concave horizontals before you buy...
Also, XGaming sales a bundle of 2 supers, 18 black buttons, and 2 start buttons for 30$... The quality shouldn't be much better, but at least you get supers instead of comps, and a few legal Roms too...
I had a cool sig once... But it had to go because of *someone*... You know who you are!

Reheheheally? Could you please link me to that site? It'd be a little dissapointing if I can't get the buttons in the colors that I want, but that sounds like a superior deal to the one I saw on eBay.

I believe he is refering to

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13718&item=6167491454&rd=1

but I was under the expression that x gaming products were not of the quality of official happ joysticks and buttons or I could be wrong.

As far as i know, you are absolutely right... But those eBay bundle deals are of even lesser quality then X-Gaming's products... So yeah, Happ is the best way to go... If you don't mind the outrageous prices... If ponyboy can get you a good deal and you feel safe ordering from him, go ahead... I personally do NOT like sending money via mail or my credit card number through email... But that's just me...

BTW, i think you might be able to get better prices directly from XGaming.com then through eBay... Not sure though...

Your posts are very misleading.  There are quite a number of bundle deals on eBay that use only Happ parts, and are of great quality.  For example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13718&item=6168022382&rd=1

I've ordered from that seller and everything was great.  If you are talking about some generic looking bundles, than sure.. but to just say "ebay bundles" are bad is extrememly misleading.

I was just checking Ponyboy's prices, and I could get a much better deal on all the buttons and sticks that I need for my project from him.

yeah that usually seems to be the case. I'll be ordering from him next time I need anything.

And Oldsage, I was just pointing those items out.. didn't mean it as yelling at you or anything.  Frankly, those sets are a bit pricey IMO, but there ARE good quality bundles on eBay if you look :)

Even though I'm very interested in the Happs Universal because of it's 4/8 way switching, the Competition is a bit cheaper, and it looks like the "bat" on the controller might be a bit longer, which would be a plus IMO. It looks like it's all around a very "industry standard" controller. But I've got to decide if a saving a few bucks and getting a longer "bat" is worth loosing 4/8 way switchability for. Hmm... :\

well that will really depend on your gameplaying?  What games do you play?

If you want machine "to play them all" you need a dedicated 4way IMO... or a 49way which people have been raving about lately.

If you are a classics guy who will once and a while play newer fighters and the like... you will NEED a dedicated 4way.

If you are a newer game player, with the occasional game of pacman or frogger every now and then, you could probably get away with just 8ways.

It really depends on what you think you'll play.  There is no doubt that PacMan plays better on a 4way compared to an 8way IMHO, but if you're only gonna play a 4way classic once a month, you won't care.  If you're going for a highscore, or are addicted to teh classics, you'll be sorry you don't have a 4way.

I would not recommend the universals for anything other then the classics... No fighters and similar 8-way games... Also, the stick is tiny - not suitable as a general purpose stick... If you want a general purpose 4/8-way switchable stick, go with either a J-Stik or a Super...

I guess I will go with the competition then. Most of the games I want to play are from the 90's, and while I do love me my classics and will probably play them every now and then, they aren't the main reason I'm building a cabinet. I want something that can handle fighting games, beat 'em ups, and action games, and handle them well. If I have to choose between having some disfunctionality with some classics, or having alot of disfunctionality with newer games, I think I'll choose the former. And I'll be saving some money too, which could easily make me feel better if I start to wonder if I'm missing out on true 4 way control.

And besides, it's not like I can't ever build another cabinet devoted to the retro classics. I doubt that my first BYOAC project will be my last, because it seems like a very rewarding hobby so far, and I haven't even gotten to the money spending part yet. :)

If you want quality Happs parts... Make sure to look at PonyBoy in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum before buying anything.

Always support the home team.

BobRoberts should also be looked at... (is his site back up?)  GREAT guy!  Not the easiest to order from (email only) but very quick.  (2 emails and send a check.. and you might get it before some people on ebay + paypal)

People have speculated that as much, but I'm not convinced. From the looks of the auctions I've seen, the longer shaft seems thicker than the short Ms Pac one.  Maybe the Qix long shaft is like that, but I don't know for sure.
