Light em up Tommy! :)

Looks good so far, why dont you go throw some bleach on the driveway and charbroil some rubber. Get your camera and tripod set up and take some remote pics with the smoke.

Seriously i love Mustangs,

haven't got a photo but currently driving rx8 something like this same colour but minus strakes and spoiler.

its a great drive but being in the UK and it doing about 20 Mpg it is expensive to run also rotary engines drink oil :(

its hard to keep it under the speed limit and i'm running out of penalty points...

How are you going to get out if people park in those two parking spots on both sides of you?  I suppose if you have two or three burly friends, you guys can just move the car out of the problem spot, but..... ;)

My dad had a Delorean before the BttF movie came out. The prices on them briefly  went up by quite a bit. He sold his and made quite a bit on the deal.

Never assume that Australian cars are the same as their American counterparts.

Another example is the Ford Falcon. Austrailian Ford is still producing Falcon's many years after that name was dropped in the US.  Most of the police cars in "Mad Max" are Ford Falcons.  For a while the Aussie Falcon was simular to, but not the same as, the American Torino.  I beleive the current models are

As far as I know the GM cars are sold under the Holden brandname.

I believe last time I saw it I didn't even recognize it as such and think I may have thought it was a Ford...or whatever the Australian counterpart is....if GM is Holden, then might Ford be a-Foldin'? ;)

They'll TELL you it's the New Zealanders that are busy with the sheep, but ya gotta wonder how they know so MUCH about 'em and what they do with 'em.

Sorry, I assumed it was a Charger, because the jpeg is named
"Hey Charger!.jpg"

My mistake, carry on with your inbreeding, sheep shagging or whatever you people do down there for fun.

No, you were right, it is a Charger. But this is Australia's version of the Charger.

Man, I still can't believe Bones sold that car...  :-\

I have a '69 Mustang, not currently worth posting pix of.  :(

But soon.

Yes my precious...

Ditto with my '71 GT6. Hoping to get rolling on that particular restoration this summer, but that's largely dependent on how much shop space I am able to bum, and how quickly. Good to have a relative who owns an auto body shop.

This is a great place to ask a couple questions that have been floating in my brain.

First, Is there a website, like, Restore Your Own Vinatage Car dot com? RYOVC? I have  a lot of newbie questions, which leads into my other retarded questions:

Is internal work (the engine, the transmission, etc) easier to repair, or the exterior (the body, the seats, etc) easier to repair?

If a car has rust, like, a sizeable amount, but not so much that there are gapping holes in the car, can the body piece be repaired, or is it just gone, and you need to find a replacement?

My stupid pipe dream would be to take a 79' Firebird and do a number on it, restore it, and also redo the dash completely using a computer screen in addition to the dials to tell me how the car is doing. This would be the easy part for me, with my EE background. Reading analog circuits is simple. Figuring out a motor is difficult.

This is a great place to ask a couple questions that have been floating in my brain.

First, Is there a website, like, Restore Your Own Vinatage Car dot com? RYOVC? I have  a lot of newbie questions, which leads into my other retarded questions:

Not as such, at least that I'm aware of. Pretty much every niche vehicle has a few dedicated sites though, so if you have a specific model in mind you can probably find a related forum where you can find answers to your questions as they relate directly to that vehicle.

Is internal work (the engine, the transmission, etc) easier to repair, or the exterior (the body, the seats, etc) easier to repair?

This is largely dependent on the individual. Most find engine repair to be the easiest, at least for beginners. I have a lot of experience in body repair, as my father owns a body shop and has for my entire life. I've spent most of my 35 years in and out of body repair. Given that, I find body repair to be easier and engine repair gives me more trouble.

If a car has rust, like, a sizeable amount, but not so much that there are gapping holes in the car, can the body piece be repaired, or is it just gone, and you need to find a replacement?

Rust is the great enemy of every classic car owner. The short answer to your question is yes it's possible to repair rusted body panels without replacing the entire part. The longer version is that if not done correctly rust will come back quickly enough to make your head spin. Disregard the suggestion about wiping filler over it, ugh. That will last a couple months. The correct way is to cut out the rusted area. After the area that looks rusty on the outside is cut out, you'll discover that there's a lot more rust on the inside (rust is like icebergs). You really need to cut out as much as you can without totally destroying the panel. Once you've gotten out all that's practical to remove, you need to treat the inside with something like POR-15 or Rust Bullet, which will convert the rust into  a hard black crust. Then you need to cut out panels to weld in place of the rust you cut out. Then you grind down the welds and resurface the area with filler. Even after going through all of these steps, I've had rust come back on me a few times. However if the car is well cared for and always garaged, this becomes much less of an issue.  The best policy is to replace anything that's easy to swap out like fenders or doors if the rust is very bad at all.

I expect that there are lots of boards out there dedicated to that body style Camaro/ Firebird given their popularity. Searching one out and doing some research there would be good first step if you're serious about this project.

Mechanical restoration is much easier to learn than bodywork.  You can grab a book and follow it step-by-step for torque specs and assembly/disassembly procedures.  Bodywork requires "finesse".  You only learn it by doing it.

Thanks for the info Stingray - I'd have to say, when it comes to restoring old games, non-water damaged games, it is easiest to repair the outside than the inside. I figured with the size and complexity of an engine, it would be difficult to fix. As well, if you screw up an arcade game repair, you won't be going down a road at 70 MPH when it breaks.

Unfortunately, living in an appartment means no garage or space of my own to repair cars. It is definately a post-house purchase type idea. We can all dream, can't we?

Most of us seem to have a car that we got rid of and wished we didnt or need to start working on one, mine was a 1970 Buick Skylark with a mean 350 in it....ahhhh those old muscle cars were the best.

I've had one of those cars I wish I still had.  1976 Impala.

4-dead-bodies trunk.
Skull superglued to the dash.
Screwdriver hammered into the trunk to be able to open it.
Lights that required a buddy to hold a Mag light out the window
Purchased for less than my 3-month insurance premium.

Johann.

RIP, my friend :'(

Drew,

My first car was a 1971 Pontiac Catalina.  It had some rust, and the vinyl top was shot, but it ran great and I got it for free!

I could probably get 5 or 6 bodies in the trunk if I packed them just right!  ;D

I later sold it to a friend, and it was totaled when a police car ran into it while it was parked in front of her house.  I still have fond memories of that car.

The replacement was a 1974 Plymouth Scamp with a 318 V8 engine. That car was alot of fun to drive as well.

The sportiest car I have ever owned was a 1988 Honda Prelude SI.  That car was a lot of fun to drive until the snow got more than 6" inches deep.

Lucky bast.  I had a 1982 Prelude.  What I really wanted is the 1991 Prelude Si with the four wheel steering, in red.

Mine was red, but I went without the four wheel steering.  I had initailly been negotiating a deal for yellow one, but the dealer started jerking me around too much.  we had agreed on a price, and I gave them a deposit.  They called me later to tell me that they could get me approved for financing, but then they wouldn't tell me the rate or monthly payment over the phone. WTF??

A little later that day, I heard an ad on the radio for another dealer promising to beat any other deale'rs price.  I called them and they agreed to a price over the phone!  When I went in they told me they coulkd sell me the same car for 1000$ less, but it would take two weeks for them to get one in yellow or they had a red one ready to go.  The salesman even came in early the next day to teach how to drive a stick shift. It was probably the most pleasant car buying experience I have ever had.

Mine was an '88 CRX Si with every feature they had except driving lights!

I also had an '88 Prelude Si, but I had the 4-way steering.  Ended up trying to pull the engine not too long after getting it (had to, some other stuff was leading me to it, and then the timing belt went...nice design on those cars, Honda ::) ) and lost my garage....ended up seeing it running again, though.  Buddy fixed it up....man, I love Hondas, I just wish they weren't so danged expensive!

SLK 230 Kompressor

not the greatest pic of her, but she was a beauty.  actually my wife's car, I wanted the 320.   ;D

I traded it for my avalanche.  in about 2 years I'll want another sporty car.  somethign for the track maybe.

that SC430 is NICE!  I'm a big fan of the hardtop convertible, the main reason I bought the SLK.

the new one is kind of a convertible  ;)

BTW Delta88,  the first car I ever had was a 71 Delta 88.  It had the Rocket 455.  I loved that car.  It was the definition of land yacht.

Not sure how to post bthe pix so will just post the links.

Here is my baby, wanted to own one of these since I was a kid. For the first week I would just stand in my garage staring at it in amazement.

Ford Coswoth powered Westfield factory specs showed 240HP and yes I did nearly kill myself in it. Road regsitered and bucket loads of fun. Even had a visit from the Boys in blue who claimed to have seen me "Drifting" the car around some back streets. Hard to stand there an argue that it must have been another green, howling, Westfield with a huge intake sticking out the bonett.

Second. ID the lovely Mrs Oz (Who Stingray is probably familir with) with my second favourite car I have ever owned.

Ok, I have to admit... now that I actually have something to show, threads like these have become a lot more interesting for me. :)

My wife and I were given this car as a gift from our marriage back in April.

Great looking Midget. I have something of a soft spot in my heart for little British cars. Does that one have the smaller BMC A-series engine like the Mini uses or the larger engine that was borrowed from the Triumph Spitfire? I believe both were used in the MG/ Austin-Healie Midget line, but I'm not sure which years got which motor.

It's a 1500 engine.  I believe the same as the Spitfire.

Right, that's the Spitfire engine. Very nice little car you have there. Enjoy it!

Great looking Midget. I have something of a soft spot in my heart for little British cars. ...

Me too...  My dad bought a new Triumph TR-3B in 1963.  it looks just like the one below, only sky blue.  I drove it to high school because it was the only "spare" car we had at the time, and its total lack of a top at the time made those Kansas winters a real challenge.

It developed "generator problems" mysteriously about a week before my little sister turned 16.  Dad's who i inherited the start a project, get bored, and never finish gene from.  It's still in the garage at the folks' house.  My sister is 30 now.

We're always threatening to just drag it out and restore it while he's not looking.  It is a real sports car.  None of this froo froo rolling windows, or radios, or air-conditioning.  Just a giant steering wheel (real power steering) and the shortest throw stick shift ever.  The straight 4 2+ litre tractor engine in it is the torque-iest.

I could go on and on.  But you're already bored.

Nope, I'm not!

I love Triumphs. I have a ratty GT6 that will be my next project car, just have to wait until I can talk dear old dad into letting me have some space in his shop so I can work on it. I have the old inline 6 that came out of it, but I'm thinking I might try to shoehorn a Chevy V6 into it to make the little monster a little more reliable & give it a healthy HP boost in the process.

if a straight six fit length wise, and a v6 will fit width wise, go for a small block V8! Cheaper in the long run what with al the after market bits and pieces for chevy small blocks.

My dream back in high school was always to take the Umph down to the auto shop  in the basement and shoehorn a chevy 383 with all the cool intakes and headers and carbs and so on in there.  300+ bhp in a car that was already squirrely powerful at 120 bhp whoud be the best kind of dangerous :)

My concern isn't with the length ot the width, it;s with the height. Not sure the V-6 will be short enough to get the hood to close, and I'm not about to cut a hole in that beautiful hood. :)

I just sold my G35 coupe over the weekend.  :(

My wife is pregnant and it isn't very family friendly.

I can't think of a better reason to sell it though.   :D

Oh that's a great site. I've throughly read just about every page on that one about a dozen times. That's exactly the kind of thing I'm planning to do with my GT6. Just to prove that Ireally am capable of totally rebuilding a car, here's a shot of my Mini while I was elbow deep in her guts:

And here's one of the same car at last year's Oklahoma All British Car Day:

Took my kids to a Mustang show yesterday.  I'm not into it, but I can certainly look at the cars and appreciate all the hard work and the reasons people do it.  My kids love it.  Those were some very pretty, badass looking cars.  One guy had a digital video camera mounted on his rollbar so he could watch his street races later.

In the last picture that I posted you can see a couple of race prepared Minis in the background. The white car has a digital video camera mounted in it. His videos can be pretty wild. :)

I don't believe you! I want to see some vin number comparison pics!

Actually, that's pretty sweet, if I could do that, I probably wouldn't be building an arcade cabinet heh  :D  But I'm an old car freak.  One day I plan on rebuilding my 63 cadillac convertible back to its glory days.

Actually since the vin plate is just held on these cars with standard pop-rivets like you can get at home depot, a vin plate shot wouldn't be very impressive. In any case, the panel that the vin plate is riveted to was very rusty and was replaced during the restoration, so I actually did move the vin plate from the origianl panel to the new panel.

I know you were joking, but if you're interested, full photographic documentation of the rebuild can be seen here.

And thanks for the compliments.
