Nothing against Nirvana here either. I just think Nevermind is just a teensie-tiny bit overrated.
...so is Pet Sounds. But that's a diffrerent topic...
Nevermind, though, was a cool album (it was only the 2nd CD I ever owned... the first being The Wall) and at the time it was different, raw, full of energy and angst and, as such, was a nice change from the cheesy hair metal bands, the lame hip-hop acts (the in-between period of rap when it was all gimmicky, lightweight rhymes... watch "Fear of a Black Hat" for further info), and the faltering pop scene. Then MTV took the alternative sound, played it in heavy rotation (this was still at a time when MTV was playing videos more often than tripe) and commercialized it to the point where every song on the album was "the millionenth time you heard it this week".
Suddenly, all these grunge bands came out of the woodwork and for every Pearl Jam there were a handful of 'also-rans' sporting an unwashed look and a healthy contempt for establishment. I don't blame Cobain and Co. for this, but Nevermind, ultimately, did not age well in my opinion.
...neither did Pet Sounds. But I won't drag the Beach Boys into this.
Well, anyway, I'm 2 cents poorer.
