I would like to see some arcades with 15" monitors
« on: March 04, 2005, 03:27:49 pm »
I have seven 15"  PC monitors 5 PCs 250 mhrtz
what would you make of them? 1 will go for dreamcast.
I would like to see some arcades that others have made with small monitors
bar top, cocktail, stand up.

To be fair, I believe that pic was a transitory pic... the builder had the intention of adding a bigger monitor...

you know... toss a 19'' monitor and that is one sharp cab.
I would play that cab as is.

I'd go with caberet style cabs. The originals generally used 13" monitors, so 15" monitors should fit with little design modifications.

3 questions:

- Is is "caberet" or "cabaret"?

- Question 2 (somewhat related to question 1) Why are these not-so-huge cabs called "cabaret" cabs?  Are there dancing girls involved?  Or is there some other meaning for the word "caberet"

- I hardly ever see any examples of these.  Anybody got any links to some nice ones?  I've got a couple 15" monitors hanging around as well and I wouldn't mind having a cab that isn't quite the size and weight of my current one.

Probably has to do with the typical locations they were intended for.  I doubt dancing girls were involved, cocktail cabs would seem more appropriate for such venues. ;)

I have been thinking of them. I have 5 arcades in a spare bed room ( to be honest it was a living room, I bought a condo and bought both sides) I like having more arcades than swapping CPs. There is a caberet galaga in the Louisville airport I play when I am there. I am the worst speller here. just can not do it

I cut and pasted this from the link to the galaga arcade (large arcade small monitor)

"The CP graphics were created by me using Adobe Illustrator, and printed at home on matte photo paper. I used 3m 77 spray adhesive to apply them to the CP. Then I brushed on eight thin coats of water based polyurethane.  If you run four fingers acros the surface, you can feel a slight step at the edge of the paper"

Thats is cool... I thought the ink would run... I wonder how long he let it dry first. (the ink)

The trackball is really more for administrative purposes than for gaming.  I have a real trackball in my other cab.

I'm not left handed, but I do prefer the stick in the right hand.  I guess it was years of Doom and other PC keyboard games that caused the preference.  Actually, I could go either way.  It only takes a minute to adapt to new controls.

:) No offense was intended.  I see people spell it that way all the time and since I wasn't sure about the origins of the cab-style-name, I just wasn't sure of the correct spelling

None taken. Had I caught it before posting I'd have corrected my spelling of it. :)

Yeah, I just don't know where to look on Klov.  Searching for "cabaret" only turns up a couple machines that were named "cabaret".

I know Pacman, Galaga,  Rally-X, Centipede, Tempest, and Robotron have pix of the cabaret versions available at KLOV. Most of the major hits of that era were available in a cabaret version, so look up those games.

I wanted it for playchoice 10 and other dual monitor games, but I can't get MAME to use them both.  Maybe I should use a dual head video card.

edit: or how about a mini-upright? like this one. granted this one has 17" but i reckon 15 would be fine:

I would assume you could only go with 15" if you wanted it horizontal...

BTW, i also had one or two 15" monitors, but i figured i have nothing to do with them so i got rid of them as soon as we moved...
I had a cool sig once... But it had to go because of *someone*... You know who you are!

a 15" PC monitor will often fit decased into a 13" arcade monitor frame, consider them to be the same size. They are appropriate in anything that used a 13" monitor, which is some cocktails, some mini's and some cabarets.

A 21" PC monitor is the appropriate replacement size for a standard 19" arcade cabinet.

A 17" PC monitor isn't the right size for anything, way too small for most 19" arcade cabs and won't fit in most 13" cabs. It won't even fit in the few 17" cabs (Nintendo dual monitor cocktails), because the tube is too small and the neckboard too large.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.
