Best way to clean adhesive from control panel???
« on: October 30, 2002, 02:56:34 pm »
Whats the best way to clean an old control panel.  My current control panel is just covered with this old sticky adhesive from some old overlay covering.  This sticky adhesive goo is just all over the entire panel.

Any thoughts???

I use GOOGone to remove sticky pinball mylar glue. It should work great for removing overlay residue as well. Let it soak on there for a while. I put paper towels on top after a good soaking of GOOGone then let it sit for about 45 minutes. Also helps to use a scrap credit card  or similar to scrape off the glue once you let it soak for a while. Then I clean it with Naptha (available at any hardware store) To remove any leftover GOOGone.

Good luck

A commercial product called Goo Gone or my personal fav, lighter fluid. I've actually used gasoline to remove adhesive as well.... they all work, just depends how brave you are :)

If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

Googone has previously suggested... also could use a heat gun (hair dryer in a pinch) and a scraper I suppose...

just thought i'd provide an alternative suggestion.

I guess if the control panel is metal you could use most any solvent (outside/well ventilated... stay away from flames etc...)  but goo gone is good if you need to be gentle with the surface.

you could also try acetone ($8/gallon @ your local hardware store).  This is what I used, and it worked really well. much cheaper then googone.  (use with plenty of ventilation or, prefferably, outside though)

I'd use lighter fluid it's only like $1 a bottle and works fine. I used to work at a car dealer ship and that is what we used to remove the "Joe Blow's Ford" stickers from the back of the cars. Also if it's metal you can use a razor blade that will make it easier.

Oops is another brand of adhesive remover. You should be able to find it at most any Walmart, Target, Home depot type stores. Its usually in the section with the glue.

If your going to use acetone than just grab your girls nail polish remover. Its the same thing only with an added fragrance. There are two types of nail polish remover. One contains acetone and one doesn't. Either one would probably work but I would think that the one that does contain acetone might work a little better. (less rubbing)
Just look for the ingredients on the back of the bottle. If it contains acetone it will be the first thing listed on the ingredients.
Oh, and dont use any of the chemicals listed above with a cigarette hanging out of your mouth or you'll end up looking like Brax"s personalized picture ! :o

I decided to try this stuff called GOOF-OFF which I purchased at Home Depot.
It was inexpensive ($3.49 for 16 oz) and is quite potent stuff.

Managed to clean a very nasty adhesive mess off my control panel very easily.

Okay, here is the method i used and it works perfectly. Believe me, this control panel couldn't have gotten more gooped up with old overlays, duct tape, and other crap.

1.  Using heat gun and window (razor blade) scraper, get off most of the thick adhesive residue, overlay, etc...

2.  Use GOOF-Off cleaner (available at Home Depot) or other similar solvent to remove the remaining thin stuff off the control panel.

3.  Soap and water next removes any residual solvents to a crisp, countryside shine.

Thanks again for the tips!

My necro thread powers are at work....

I bought goo gone and saturated it all over my stargate control panel these past two days, and the damn adhesive is not coming off.  I used a razor blade and tried to get most of this stuff off, as well as light sand paper.  It is looking worse for wear afterwards which I will have to use bondo to smooth out any gouges.

It is still frickin sticky.   do not know what they used to put that artwork on, but it was sure thick.

I'm thinking of lighter fluid and torching the control panel to get this gunk off.

Any suggestions since 2002?, other than BBQ ones.  ;D
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Use Citristrip.  Don't let it dry.  Scrape off while still wet after about a 10 min soak.  Repeat as necessary.

+1 Orbital sander does the trick.
