Anyone suffer major injuries after installing trackball?
« on: February 23, 2005, 09:10:37 am »
Just a thought...

Back in my prime when I was a kid,
I always wondered if it was possible to
spin a trackball real hard, and get your
finger wedged in between the ball and the
base or control panel.

Is this something that physically could happen?

I plan on putting in a trackball soon... and
dont know if I want to have a plate on top
of the cab or make the ball flush with the control panel.

Is there anything to this, or just some kind of wierd fear
that I should seek professional help for?
...so I will ask you... "Deal, or No Deal?"

I used to get my fingers pinched occasionally.  This won't ever happen on a good trackball.  When the rollers wear down the ball can rest low and it makes the gab bigger.  If you mount with a plate and have a trackball that isn't worn then you should have no problems.  It would be real hard to do it right without a plate though.

put a 4-way joystick in front of it so you won't or can't spin the ball that hard, you really don't need to spin it very hard. What are you thinking before spinning the ball ? Stepping back a couple of steps and then run forward and spin the ball ?   :P

My mate split his finger open on a security device installed right in front of the 2 1/4" trackball in a modern Sega golf game (can't remember the name of it).

Made me laugh tho  :D

I used to always get pinch blisters from a nasty Cabal machine.  *ouch*.  I'd always come back though...it was like an abusive relationship.  :-*

I used to hate Centipede when I was a kid because I would always manage to pinch my fingers in the trackball.
20 some years later, Centipede is one of my favorite games, but I'm still a little paranoid of the trackball.  ;D

Not that it should be funny, but I always get a chuckle out of the Irritating Maze warning that starts new games:  People with heart conditions should not play.  And I can see why, that sound of glass breaking makes me cringe everytime... and I can rarely play more than one quarter at a time.

This really depends on how you play the trackball, the quality of lip around the ball, and how worn the rollers are.  Some other stuff like weight of the ball, too, I guess.

If you just hit the top of ball with your palm (coughgolfgamescough), no need to worry.

OTOH, if you play with your finger tips and ride the ball all the way to the CP top, look out.  Here's where the lip and rollers come into play.  Pinched fingers are not fun.

IMO, happs/atari (normal & high lip) have a slightly better lip than betson, which is slightly better than wico's (I'll talking 3"), AFA finger pinches.  My wico 2 1/4" seems to be the worst, but happs 3" high ball is almost as bad.  If you put plexi/lexan over the TB, you also have to check it's quality.

Now, I'm talking about my fairly new trackballs, and as mentioned before, worn rollers drop the ball lower, increasing the size of the gap between the ball and the lip.  So bad rollers = more pinches.

You might want to take note that heavier and sticker balls can pinch harder, AWA faster moving balls.  Also note I don't have any plexi coming close to my TBs, so AFA plexi goes I'm going on what others say.

AFA getting a finger actually stuck inside instead just the skin pinched, unless you have a really bad plexi-trackball match or totally worn rollers, and baby size fingers: don't worry.  You'll only get pinches.

my 2 cents.

That's the one.  Never has there been a game with a more apt title.  Still, I play it every once and a while and really like it (Just can't take it in anything but short spurts).
