replacing potentiomiters

I'm woking on hacking some of the jakks units into one "thingy".  But I cant get the pots off the atari paddle units. but if I guess correctly I can just find out the rating of that pot and buy new ones. Am I right or just retarded? And how would I measure the resistance of the pot anyways?

I broke a rotary pot on my pedals, I unmounted it took it to RS components and asked for a replacement they came back in 2 minutes with a part which cost about

these are blank on the bottom. i know they are usually stamped on the bottom. but i'm guessing they dont want people copying their stuff.

Use a DVM to measure the resistance between the two outer lugs or terminals on the pot.  This will give you the resistance but will not specifiy the taper.  In most control situtations the pot has a linear taper meaning the resistance changes evenly across the control range.

Ask for a pot with the same resistance as you measured with a linear taper and you should have an exact replacement.

Not when you measure from the 2 outside points.  The position of the wiper is the middle point.
