cheapest marquee holder?

What has everyone found to be the cheapest option for the marquee holder? I know Happ sells one, but I was wondering if anyone found anything else that worked that was cheaper or available at common stores.

strips of aluminum angle work great too.  Put a nice coat of black semi gloss paint on em and they look great.   They can be found in the hardware section at your local home depot/lowes for about $3 a strip (4ft).

Drywall corners work well. You can also consider using the L angle they use for drop ceilings that screw against the wall. Paint them as directed above...

I use the drop ceiling rails painted black. You get like 10 foot of the stuff for like $2.

How would you attach them? Just positioned on top of the wood and in front of the marquee, then screw them into the wood?

There are metal L rails, plastic/vinyl L rails, window edge channels, etc....

it's a damn good thing megashock5 asked this question for the millionth time, otherwise I would've never thought of using chewing gum as the ultimate innexpensive way to mount my marquee.

I tried the search and found 3-4 posts that addressed the question (most were about the Happs holders). Enough to get good information, but I appear to be far from the "millionth."

I say go for the drop ceiling rails also.  They are L shaped and you put them on just like you said.  The L shape is used around the walls.  It is $1.69 for 12 feet at my local Home Depot.

They also make wooden molding that is "L" shaped.  I beleive it is called "outside corner" molding.  That might be easier to trim if you aren't happy with the drop ceiling edge.  But the drop ceiling edge does come in black.  They also make a metal sheetrock edge that is shaped like like a "J".  It comes in black and would match the drop ceiling edge. (Both folded edge sheetmetal).  It might be easiest for you to use the "J" for the bottom,(with a small spacer to hold the marquee foward), and the "L" to hold in the top.  All depends on your cab, and your creative skills.

I'm not following that logic at all.  If you have the "L" for the top, why wouldn't you use the "L" for the bottom as well?  Or use the "J" for the top and bottom?  Why use two separate materials and add a requirement that you fine tune it instead of using identical pieces?

For my marquee I used photo banner paper between two sheets of plexiglass.  To mount it I had used a piece of wood on each side with a channel cut about 3/4 of the way down (like you'd do for T-molding).  Then I cut a square notch into the bottom 1/4 of the plexiglass.  So 3/4 of the marquee sits in the channel and it's supported by the notch.  You can slide it in and out very easily.

For the top and bottom black framing... no laughing now... I used black electrical tape.  Sounds pretty dumb, but it looks better than you'd think.

Trying to make it simple,(perhaps trying too hard).  The J channel would be screwed in from the front, with the screws being hidden by the marquee.  The L on top would have screws visible only from the top of the machine.  I was also thinking about the angle under the marquee not being 90 degrees which might require an attempt at bending the L.  If the top wasnt 90 degrees, again it would only be visible from the top.

Do either of those make any sense to anyone but me?

The reason you couldn't have 2 J shaped holders, is because the screws that hold the J shape on would be behind the marquee, so you would not be able to get the marquee into them once they were both mounted.


If you have a J shape on the bottom, then you get the cleaner look of the J, as you would not have any of the metal visible on what is the speaker mount on most cabs, but then you can have the L on top, so you can actually access the screws to remove it.

I used lattice topping to hold my marquee.  You can buy this for about $5 for 8' from Home Depot.  Its a long, about 1" deep stick with about 1/4 x 3/4" groove down the center.  Its normally used to top the plastic lattice you use under your deck or something, so its in the decking department.  I just drilled small holes through the bottom portion, use long, thin nails to attach it to the frame.  The sandwich of lucite, marquee, plexiglas silde right down into it.

For anyone who has an Anderson's nearby - just this morning I found something that should be about perfect.

It was in building materials in the same aisle as ceiling tiles (could be for drop ceilings or just a corner protector), but it was a light metal like aluminum and in an L shape. $2.29 for 8 feet or so, and it was already black.

Planning on going back with my wife's station wagon to get it.

I went to every Home Depot and Lowes in the are, and all of them only had white drop ceiling frames.


Anderson's seems to be an only in Ohio sort of thing.

I used a "corner protector" from home depot....just ask for it in the windows/wallpaper area - its a strip of clear plastic that is adhesive, that sticks to the corners of walls to protect them.

i stuck one on the top, and one on the bottom of my marquee....the strip was $2
