but is it ok to have a small monitor while you save up for a biger one?

Yeah lol just don't post pics of it yet :P
Why not get the parts and then build it? meanwhile play the games on your PC

I'd hate to unveil the arcade i'm making to friends and family and people see a puny-screen. It's like unveiling a Corvette with a 4 cylinder in it

HA! I'll never tell.

By the way, your taxes last year were under-reported, and we need to speak about some of the books you've checked out of the library . . . Expect the men at your door shortly.

--- saint

You build a cabinet with the monitor you have, not the monitor you wish you had. :)

He said nothing like that Saint.

By your definition this thread is not tacky. No one said anyone was stupid,

I can't belive the older forum members are acting so silly about this. They have made this thread unbearable to read now.

How silly.

I'm out of this thread, it's just gotten to childish for me.

How is pointing out a specific cab, and then a whole thread of cabs saying that they don't understand why those people have small monitors.... that is calling them out.

A general comment is one thing, bringing it to the point of "hey, look here" is just like saying "this guy is dumb cuz his monitor isn't as big as I THINK it should be"

So someone spent a lot of time on a cabinet and they don't have a 27" monitor packed into so it sucks?

I think you guys that are saying cabs with small monitors look stupid should start donating some money to those who don't have a moniitor large enough.

Well pretty much, to be honest. Does this include you? I'd assume for someone to be defensive about it, this is why. I just think that as an onlooker I have reason to have this opinion.. they post the pic and my only role is to judge it's aesthetics

so what? why does it bother you so much?  The people defending this "gotta have big monitors" argument don't seem to understand you are calling out and insulting people on the board.

You're making fun of people who put a lot of effort into these things, then call some of us jerks for trying to defend people for working with what they have and using what they can afford.

I have 3 15" PC monitors in my basement... if I was buillding a cab... why would I go buy a new TV?  or even a used one?? I HAVE monitors already... ever think that's the case with some of these?

Steller's first post wasn't bad. Notice I replied to it in the spirit of the thread.

The thread then degenerated to:

"It really is just pitiful
people with bezels that are a foot long each side, it's just disgusting
make your cabinet and then put a baby TV in there...
it's so so so ugly"

which is clearly insulting.

Your initial posts were fine as well. Then however, you posted a picture of a person's cab, captioned: "*screams like a girl at the horror*" -- how do you think the owner of that cab feels about that? Now, benefit of the doubt, I don't think you meant to belittle anyone per se, though I think that was the end result. Even up to that point you'll notice I didn't post my opinion of the thread, just rebutted the perspective with my own. You even posted a plea to keep the thread light hearted, which I appreciated.

Unfortunately, SubZero fed off your posted picture, and responded with: "hehthat is the worst "arcade" cab i've ever seen" -- now if that isn't just plain mean I'm afraid I don't know what is.

Note to SubZero: In that same thread, you pointed out you thought TV's were fine and you didn't think arcade monitors were any better than TV's. Those are fine points to bring up and you didn't slam or belittle anyone in them. Just so you know I saw both sides of your coin there, and don't think you're always particularly evil.  I'm going to pick on a few other things you said, but you also said some things that were decently said and forwarded the conversation on - duely noted.

A bit more discussion ensued that was civil, then Steller posted a picture of a cabinet with this to say: "Look at this cab...Dude wtf??" and the picture title is "poop.jpg" - if that isn't mean then I'm afraid I just don't know what is.

Then SubZero gave a bit of a slap to the people who were brave enough to post their cabinets with this statement: "there are a ton of cabs on that "post your cabinet" thread that have little little little monitors..ew" ... Didn't necessarily single out any one person, but clearly he has a poor opinion of any cabinet that has a small monitor in that thread. I'm not sure what value that brought to this thread.

Your later point: "Man, I don't understand the hate in this thread. He's not attacking anyone, he's making a general observation." missed the point that there were people specifically singled out as noted above. What could have been a possibly interesting thread unfortunately, whether intended or not, ended up attacking some people who didn't ask for it nor did they deserve it.

By the way Sub, when you responded to Drew with: "you know that makes it sound like I say a lot of stupid things that amaze you? Gee thanks." I applauded. You took a direct challenge to your posting and responded to it without attacking, I was very happy to see that.

Guess everyone has a different opinion of what good netiquette is, but if you don't see why some people would be offended by the tone this thread took maybe you could re-read it with what I've said here in mind.

(By the way, this post isn't an attack on any one individual in the thread nor does it represent my overall opinion of anyone in the thread. More of a dissection of the thread to give my opinion on why potentially good threads go bad)

Cheers!

I think you guys that are saying cabs with small monitors look stupid should start donating some money to those who don't have a moniitor large enough.  Then you can rip on them for not coming to you for the $$$ to get a decent monitor.  They can then just be stupid and not broke....

No that's not the solution and it's not their fault.

Also, to those ripping on cabs and the monitors, please post pics of what you have done in this thread, I would love to see them.

And what exactly are you going to say? To those with nice cabs and with nice big monitors? To those with nice monitors but a cabinet or control panel you dont like? See, I'm sure you have your own opinions which you have a right to, and to express

The inital post was tacky, defending it is tacky, I have to agree with Saint.

You are such an ass it is amazing.  yeah pretty much they suck.... ya ever hear of "if you dont have anything nice to say...."  If you think their cab isn't so great, then give them consturctive criticism.  Say "it might look nicer with a bigger monitor" not "you cab is crap cuz you dont have a 32034" TV LOLOLO you suck, i rule"  You can criticize aesthetics, but you don't have to be a ---meecrob--- while you do it.

And as for what would you say to pics..... where are pics of your cab?  You make it seem like ANY cab with a big monitor is AUTOMATICALLY awesome.... sorry... no.  In fact, a lot of arcade games just aren't as much fun on large monitors.  Just because you can get a 50" TV doesnt mean it should be in your cab.

There are plenty of cabs with large screens that aren't very nice aesthetic wise... the monitor does not make the cab.

Your argument is juvenile... just like all your other posts.

Cuz they're ugly to be honest. They don't bother me so much, they're just ugly that's all. I'm not insulting anyone.

You're making fun of people who put a lot of effort into these things, then call some of us jerks for trying to defend people for working with what they have and using what they can afford.

I didn't call anyone a jerk? I just don't think they should do it. It's my opinion, why should they care? I'm not openly making fun of them but I'm not against it :P

I have 3 15" PC monitors in my basement... if I was buillding a cab... why would I go buy a new TV?  or even a used one?? I HAVE monitors already... ever think that's the case with some of these?

Is it really that hard to figure out?

opinions are one thing.. insulting people is another entirely. You are of course entitled to your opinion.. everyone is.  You don't have to shove it down everyone's throat however or express it so condescendingly.

no, you didn't say "jerK" but the implication is there.  It's pretty clear you don't think it should be done which is fine.  However, it's also clear that you think you are better than these people.

as for "Is it really that hard to figure out?"  I don't even know how to respond to that... you think a person with parts already... SHOULD buy a new tv... even if it means it would take longer to get the cab up and running?  If I were in this position... I should just let the monitors I have gather dust?  A bit absurd no?

Opinions without tact or common courtesy will inevitably leave you an outcast of whatever social group you're stating them in. Having an opinion is fine. But flatly stating your opinions without regard to how you present them and how they are received is not a virtue or something to be proud of. Understanding this is what makes the difference between someone who is interesting (regardless of whether or not you agree with their opinion) and someone who is just simply loud and boorish.

As a side note, failing to understand this will likely leave you going through life with people perpetually mad at you and/or unwilling to socialize with you. Taking it as a point of pride that "I told it like it is and their reaction is their problem" is a poor substitue for a lonely, isolated life and one I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Tact isn't a weakness. You can make your points and state your opinion without losing sight of tact and other people's feelings.

--- saint

Well I'm honestly not trying to attack anyone either. I just have strong opinions against it. and yeah i'll openly call them ugly and pitiful cuz it's my opinion and I hope they know I strongly believe they shouldnt care, especially if they're happy with it.
it's all about opinions really

I'm NOT an ass. They're just my opinions. I didn't pick them arbitrarily. The way you just misquoted me made me look like i was being a ---meecrob--- when doing it. I didn't say it like that and you know it. I said they're ugly, and in a way disgusting to look at, but I have the same opinion of a ford mustang.. they're material objects.

You still miss my point entirely... have your opinons... I have mine.  But why go about them so meanly?  Obviously you've never heard of satire or a bit of fun since obviously my quote was not a direct quote of yours.... it was simply a characterization of how your argument seems to some people in this thread.

Who ever said just cuz it has a big tube in it it's awesome? There's a TON of other things on cabinets I hate aesthetically. Someone simply brought up a very important aspect of an arcade cabinet.

what?  YOU said it had to have a big monitor to be awesome... that's your EXACT argument.  Big screen = good, small = ugly, not good.  You can't backpedal that far buddy....

And THAT's not juvenile? Who said it was an argument.. They're my opinions. All these personal attacks on me pointdablame are getting a little cliche. If YOU don't have anything nice to say...
Quote
First... these aren't personal attacks. they are my opinions.  I personally feel that you are being quite mean in your actions and you are very arrogant, and quite frankly... an ass.  It's my perogative to feel this way, just as it's yours to have your opinions.  However, I try to keep my criticisms consturctive except for cases like yours when you are so overly nasty and rude to people that I feel you deserve a bit of it back.  I am not juvenile... I can assure you that.  It simply amazes me that you make these statements.... and say such harsh things... and don't listen to people here... and fall back on a 5 year old's argument of "I feel that way, thats all there is, wah wah"

ANd for the record... I know that's not a direct quote of yours... no need to say I'm misquoting you ;)

The Internet is the media of communication. It doesn't make it any different than having a conversation with someone face to face, over the phone, by radio, by letter, closed circuit tv, smoke signals, or telepathy.

At any rate, these last few messages are the clear answer to your question of why everyone was / is hostile towards you.

Why do you enjoy being such a <<<censored by saint>>> on the internet... because "its only the internet"

To most of us here, this is a nice community where we like to share thoughts, ideas, etc... not be attacked by idiots.

Is it because you have anonymity and get some kick out of it?  Were you picked on as a child? Not held by your mother? I mean seriously.... grow up.

And yes, I'm resorting to name calling, cuz frankly... you deserve it.  You clearly cannot have an intellectual conversation, so I'll resort to my 8th grade tactics that I thought I would have left behind years ago... but it seems to be the only way to get through to you.

Oh, and I just have to add this in:

Whether or not you feel it's necessary to have tact on the Internet versus real life is besides the point. This is my home, and I have asked for basically one simple rule to be followed:

"Rules?  We don't need no steeenkin rules!  Well, maybe one.  Be nice to each other.  We're serious about this one.  Disagree, debate, argue at will - but please be respectful.  Messages that are antagonistic or contain profanity will likely be deleted, and repeat offenders banned from posting. "

----

One would hope that you would realize the sense of such a rule, but whether or not you do is beside the point. There are other forums that don't require such behavior if the constraints on this one aren't to someone's liking.

Cheers!

Amen.  Actually, on that note I apologze to you Saint.... this guy just grates on me, and I should have a bit more self constraint.  I only wish I were a mod so I can ban him as all he seems to do is aggravate people in our community.

You have my apologies Saint... feel free to delete my posts.  I'm bowing out of this one.  I'll continue to read his contrived logic... but you have my word I won't post in this thread again.

I don't have a cab. <yet>

If I had built one and it only had a tiny monitor, I wouldn't be any less proud than the owner of a cab with an IMAX screen.

You're the one doing all the attacking. I'm NOT an idiot. I'm not a p**** and I don't enjoy it.. I"m just sharing my opinions!

You would ban me just so you don't have to "hear" my opinions. This is why the internet sharply contrasts with real life. I'm sorry but I think you would need the social-help if you can't get past someone having vastly different opinions than yourself.

If you came into my house with the lack of respect, and the poor attitude that you have consistantly been showing on these boards, then it would be more than a safe bet that you would be removed from my house.

These boards are not some public street, that just anyone can walk around spewing whatever comes out of their mouth. Which is what you seem to think it is. This is more like a club, and just like in the REAL world, you can be removed if you don't respect the rules.

It's funny that you don't get it, maybe someone can begin a "ban subzero" poll.  Would you be curious as to the results?  I think I already know.....

Wow, have to say, I'm impressed. I've never seen Saint reply to a thread this often. My hangover is way too large to get the general gist of what is going on.

My new years resolution? Start a thread that Saint replies to, like a hundred gillion times.

My games: Tapper, Asteroids, Cocktail-MAME, Tron, ROTJ, Tempest, Star Wars (not working)
My wants: Warlords Cocktail

C'mon Saint, take it easy. You just flew a 747 over my head.

I haven't read MacBeth since 8th grade english. I was impressed with myself for simply figuring out where it came from without google. Not a clue what it means. Damn Shakespearean, or whoever Shakespeare stole it from, wisdom.
