To whom this may concern...you
« on: January 01, 2005, 02:45:17 pm »
Hey everyone, I'm about to rant about something that has been bothering the hell out of me. Whats up with some of you guys making these huge arcade cabinets and putting these tiny monitors in them!! It's like I see these nice, gorgeous, 4 player cabs with 17'' inch screens. Go get some balls and get a 25'' inch arcade monitor or tv to put in those things!

I don't know if you noticed this, but a 25" screen costs a bit of money.

Money can be spent on things other than arcade machines.

No,no they're not
they're like 180 at walmart for a 27"
It really is just pitiful
people with bezels that are a foot long each side, it's just disgusting
make your cabinet and then put a baby TV in there...
it's so so so ugly

Then why do it at all?
Just make a joystick and play in front of the pc

I agree! This has ALWAYS bothered me! And some are REALLY nice cabs with these dinky little screens in there! I mean, if you know that your cabinet is going  to have this little bitty monitor in it, then build your cab to fit it right at least!

a 20inch TV with S-Vid can be had at wal-mart for around 120 bucks. and if you live near texas, you can get a 20inch APEX with COMPONENT and S-Vid inputs for around 120! You can also order it online, it's a online buy only, or you can have it shipped to a wal mart in dallas/fort worth for free!

I mean, if you like it, thats all well and good, but no teeny tiny screen for me.

Standard whining.  ::)  The point is that people contribute what they can to this hobby in the terms of money and effort.  Who started this anyway?  The more people that are involved in someway (even those with a small monitor) the better off we are as a group.  Cant we all get along.  Maybe we could talk about something that contributes instead of this drivel.

I have a 19 or 20" monitor that fits perfectly in mine.  It's a bit blurry, but you can only really tell when you have small text.  If you know where to look, it's not too hard.  For example, my dad got it from where I work (my boss is a neighbor and good friend) and my boss wouldn't take any money for it.  My dad wanted to do something for it, so he helped him clean his garage.  Anyway, if you search around and have some luck you may be able to find something big enough for a cab withour paying a lot.

I don't know what the forums policy is on mentioning other sites, but look at some of these babys........

*screams like a girl at the horror*

And I didn't think that this was like, the real deal. I think most of these projects with little screens were temp fixes when they ran out of money spending it on making the cab, and are planing on upgrading it when they get the free money.

Couldn't disagree with you guys more.

25" arcade/SVGA monitors are expensive. If you're planning to go the TV route, fine, but not everyone wants to go that route for a variety of reasons.

If I were building a cabinet on a limited budget, the monitor is exactly what I'd skimp on, because it's one of the easiest things to upgrade later. I'd build my cabinet sized to fit the monitor I eventually want, and make do with whatever I could afford for now. A 25" sized cabinet with a 19" sized monitor makes good sense if your money is tight.

You build a cabinet with the monitor you have, not the monitor you wish you had. :)

Did someone wakeup on the wrong side of the bed this morning? We can't make a thread about how *some* of us find those little monitors kinda funny looking? Just relax, it's not a "YOU SMALL MONTIOR FREAKS NEED TO GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM" thread! It's light hearted, keep it that way! :)

I agree with you! I'm going the TV route, but your right, the monitor is the best thing to slack on to save money, and it's the one part thats easy to upgrade later.

TV's have known to cause certian people strained eyes, a tv isn't the same as an arcade monitor, but my eyes aren't that picky.

I think a TV is a little brighter then the normal arcade monitor?

In any case, some people would rather have a true arcade monitor, and I can understand that.

The thing is...people build cabs that are worthy of a 33 inch monitor, but only has a 19 inch. I agree with that one dude, build the cab to fit the specs. Look at this cab...Dude wtf??

I'm not a rich guy and I can afford one. Just take your time and save up, its simple math.  :)

Also check eBay, they always have arcade monitors for cheap.

Tritoch, when someone says you need to get some balls and put a certain size monitor in there, it's not light-hearted, he's being an arse.

There's a thing called "life" that sometimes gets in the way of things like buying a 25" monitor, and to  say "i'm not rich and I can afford one" is simply childish idiocy.  It'd be like saying "I'm not rich, but I can afford a speed boat" and that if you only have a canoe, you've "got no balls".

You're standing on your head, it seems, because it sounds like you're talking out of your arse.

I highly suggest an arcade monitor over a TV any day. I was just proving a point that there are other cheap alternatives than a 13'' inch pc monitor.

yeah that is kinda sick. Make a MINIcab like one of those cute tabletops, at least people will find it aesthetically pleasing.

And if people want to make an arcade cabinet, dont skimp on a freakin TV I mean cmon TVs are cheap

there are a ton of cabs on that "post your cabinet" thread that have little little little monitors..ew

I don't know man... I'd much rather have my machine up and running and playing games on it then waiting till I had the cash for a bigger monitor.  I'm lucky enough to have a large enough monitor for my machine, but if all I had was say a 15" PC monitor, I'm positive I'd use it so I could be playing my games... not worrying about monitor size

Drew...baby..listen. I'm not saying to live paycheck to paycheck, save your money. I just think its ridiculous that people build these cabs and put small monitors in there. I take it the ones who are complaining on this topic are the ones with small monitors in their over-sized cabs. :D. Also have any of you upgraded your cabs to a larger monitor? Everyone is saying I will, I will, but does anyone ever do it?

Uh, I'm pretty sure the "get some balls and put a bigger monitor" thing was a joke,,,notice the smiley......

I'm pretty sure he's just talking about the horrible looking ones, like the pictures linked in this thread.

Man, I don't understand the hate in this thread. He's not attacking anyone, he's making a general observation. I mean, face it, SOME of these cabs look kinda silly! Like I said before, he's not spewing hatered for small monitors, he was just wondering if he was the only one that noticed it.

Wow, people, it's new years, and you guys are so cranky!

Must be the all the hangovers! ;D

The more you reply, the more your answer backpedals or attempts to change the words you put to screen.

Either "get some balls" to define your position clearly and stick to it, or get yourself a ShutupsicleTM

Now YOU sound like the person making excuses.

I've got better things to worry about than if others think I've made a mistake in my choice of ANYTHING in my cab, and it's apparent explaining the vagaries of life here will be like clapping with one hand.  ::)

Jeez Drew, I hate to say this, but your acting childish! You seem pretty defensive, and you know that "get some balls" comment was a joke, lightin' up! It's not an evil thread!

He's not saying people with little screen in their cabs are idiots, morons, or losers! My god!

What is WRONG with you people today?

Maybe OP just doesn't want to see examples posted with lil monitors.. it's kinda like taking a snapshot of your PC and sending it in.
I'll stand by the OP's original comments though

Well personally I did find this thread tacky.

Not tacky:

"I don't understand why people put undersized monitors in arcade cabinets. Why not use a larger TV or something?"

Tacky:

"People are stupid for putting small monitors in arcade cabinets that are too big for them. WTF is wrong with them? Here, look at this picture of a cabinet that someone on this forum probably spent days/weeks building and is proud of. Let's publically make fun of them! Ha, they're stoopid and have small monitors!"

...

Never did approve of singling someone out unprovoked to belittle their work. Anyone who has built a cabinet or desktop set is part of this community doing their personal best. Picking someone out individually to belittle is just mean. I'm tired of mean spirited people.
