RayB's CP design! *Update*
« on: December 30, 2004, 11:51:29 pm »
This being the holidays means I don't work, which means I have time for "stuff". One of these being designing my control panel art...

I don't consider this finished, but wouldn't mind people's initial impressions:

I like it. Simple yet very stylish and retro looking. How do the colours and design fit in with the rest of your cab?

Looks finished to me! Great job.
It's original, but at the same time looks like it is artwork from a 'real' machine.

Thanks. "Retro" is what I am aiming for. The sides of the cab will be white with a retro art design (using a limited number of colors. Probably blue, purple, an in-between color, and black).

I am a perfectionist, so here is yet another CP design:

both are very nice.  I would raise the player 1 and player 2 buttons so they are more in the middle of the bar and not at the bottom. I hope I explained that good enough.  Leave the buttons were they are width wise but move them up height wise.

Walls: Unfortunately, I can't move those buttons higher because the upper part of the control panel rests against the backglass and a wood support underneath.

But here is yet another variation of the design! And in this one I balanced the buttons' placement with the word "PLAYER"...

Next step is to combine the best features of all 3 layouts.  :)

I like the player/spinner from CP_03b and the joystick from CP_04 (though I suppose the Player text is redundant).

Hi

Nice Job !

I really like CP3 the best - has a really nice Atari Asteroids feel with the alternate line design @ the top. complements the Atari button design perfectly !

Well Done.

Would you be able to share a full size version maybe ?

I would like to use a similar design !

What have you used to create this ?

They're all really nice. Overall I like ver. 2 (CP04) the best... though I really like the lines and circles at the top of ver. 1, which give it a very authentic retro look. Like Geezer said very Atari.

To those who asked what I used to make this: Illustrator 9.

As for making variations of this for others, that might be possible. I haven't yet decided if I want to donate the file or not... (sorry, I hope that doesn't come off as very selfish?) but if I can find time, I may be able to make some versions for people.

Here are a couple variations combining the 1st design's spinner art with the 2 other designs. (refer to these as 6a and 6b)

I like 6a best - I'm all for straight lines, not so keen on the curved parts in 6b.

I like 6a but it has overlap issues with the spinner.

Talking about SPINNER's again, I liked the spinner arrows from above which are now absent from both 6a or 6b.

But its certainly getting there. Nice creative work.

I'd definitely say the first one you posted is the most "authentic" looking and my favorite.

One thing that bothers me a bit is the outlines on the "button stripes". Since they're not repeated anywhere else in the design they stand out a bit. Maybe they could just be outlined in the background color. This will theoretically make them a bit more subdued and blend in with the rest of the panel more. I'm guessing you were going for emphasis, but the colored buttons alone are going to make them stand out a lot. I like only having the four colors used in the overlay. Outlining them in white might look really nice if some of the other elements (joy arrows, bars at top) used similar white outlines and lines. From what I remember, many of the Atari CPOs used a lot of outlines.

You might also try horizontally flipping the left "button stripes" so they're shooting up from the lower-left. This would isolate player 1's artwork to the left half of the CP.

The only other practical thing I worry about is if you allowed room in the design for dust washers for the joysticks. I don't know if you're planning on recessing them or not using them at all for that matter, but if they will be sitting on top they may cover the arrows a bit.

Most of the other designs have too many unrelated elements/colors or things going in too many directions. I think these make it look busier than it needs to be. They're all good parts, but together they just seem a bit much.

Altogether It's one of the best I've seen. Just thought I'd try to give some constructive criticism.

The streaking from opposite corners version is definitely too much. That's one of the best parts of designing on the computer...try something then just UNDO if it doesn't work.

The last one I like the best. The white adds a bit more punch to the arrows. I was actually thinking about making the black outline around the button trails white as well. It's the only black on there right now. You also might try making a white outline around the spinner arrow to be consistant.

While adding white to the design, you might try adding white to the top lined section. It'll probably be too much though. Maybe alternate light-blue, white instead of light blue, dark blue.

Sorry it took so long to reply--especially after variations were named after me

Looks good on a cab, make sure you make a marquee to match.

For sideart you could paint on some stripes for the whole atari type effect.

good luck.

WOW hard to believe it was January when I last worked on this!

Well, I need to have this printed ASAP, so I'm finalizing the design. Here is the latest revision. The top 2 or so inches are going to fold over the top of the panel and not be visible. The bottom 2.5 inches is the part that is visible on the front of the cab (the overlay will bend 90 degrees and cover 2.5 inches on the front). I still need to figure out what to put in that area.

Some people have been asking me about the art file. The answer is YES, I will release this file or portions of it, but only after I'm done and have printed it. I need to be sure that my measurements are accurate, as I don't want to screw up other people.

6a was the best.  It has a nice layered effect and everything looked good on it, the straight lines are best, except you need to deal with the centering of the spinner graphic.  And the top "Player 1" and "Player 2" are better off not there (the little people are fine.)

I would say DONT use the carriage bolts.  You dont want to ruin the excellent design of the artwork by having carriage bolts up there.

Lookin' good!

Can you repeat the light blue lines (where it says Amusement 360) on the bottom section? You'll probably need some type of hard edge so the bottom of the button "streaks" come from somewhere. Here's what I'm thinking:

I stole the bottom area out of one of the eariler panels, so the blue isn't quite right. I'm thinking it should match the top.
Brevity is not my strong suit.
