Power supply - - - namco 5-in-1 hack

Just a quick question, please correct me if im wrong.

With a normal ATX power supply, the floppy drive power cable is 6v? And it the two outside wires that I use (for + and -), right?
Red for + and yellow for -.
I have a spare PWR supply laying around, and I was wanting to use it for a bartop namco 5-in-1 hack, rather than buying a transformer.. Wiill the amps be to high?

If I remember correctly Red to Black is 5VDC and Yellow to Black is 12VDC.  Don't worry about the amps. Amps are not pushed, they are drawn.  I don't think that little 5-in-one would draw more amps than a computer power supply could handle.

5V and it is the red and a black.  I think the red and yellow are both hot, and the blacks are ground.

The 5-in-1 will want 6V not 5.  You could step down the 12V with some resistors, but it'd be much easier to get a black wall wart 6V ac-dc transformer and wire it to the wires in the 5-in-1.

Don't worry about the amps. Amps are not pushed, they are drawn. I don't think that little 5-in-one would draw more amps than a computer power supply could handle.

cool - thanks, was just trying to use stuff i already had rather than spend another $20 on a transformer. There on special at Dick Smiths, I'll get one tomorrow.

It could probably run fine off 5VDC instead of 6VDC.  Sort of like running it with batteries that are slightly run down.  It would probably work, but who knows.....

True, too true - didnt think of it like that. I'll give it a go. If it works, i'll let you know, so if others want to do the same thing they will know weather it works or not.

DON"T DO IT. 

A 5 in one game doesn't draw nearly enough current to use an ATX power supply. You will just burn up the power supply. Egads, just get a freaking plug in for it, they make them you know.

I could be wrong, but honestly I've worked in electronics all my life and I've never seen a power supply circuit that failed because it had to little current drawn from it.

I'm probably just splitting hairs.

I do agree with getting a plug in transformer though.  I just picked up a couple 5-in-1's myself and plan on using a transformer myself.

Switching power supplies need a load on them. I am not an electronics expert, so I can't explain WHY they need a load, but I know they do need a load. And 2 tiny chips (all that is on one of them things) is not a load.

Thanks for your concern Paige, Im not going to do this - i'll just get a transformer from Dick Smith Electronics tomorrow - there on special :-)
