If anyone is interested, I can start making hacked Dreamcast pads for all of you looking to put a DC in your arcade. I know it was a PAIN for me to figure out how to do it right, and this forum has given a lot to me so I figured I would give something back.

The pad is the regular SEGA pad, with 6 inputs for buttons, 4 directional inputs, and start button.

If you need them hacked to a special connector such as a MOLEX or DB15/DB25 connector, let me know.

I have 1 pad available here to start working on immediately. I will purchase more if more orders are placed. It will take me usually a day to get an order out.

If you want to send me your own Sega pads, I will hack them for $8 EACH shipped!

Shipped through USPS Priority Mail.

Price is $15 each shipped.

I can do 2 pads for $25 shipped.

If you want to send me your own Sega pads, I will hack them for $8 EACH shipped!

NOTE: VMU is NOT included.

Oohh... I have been putting off hacking my dreamcast controllers for AGES!

So you will have digital up/down/left/right, start, 3 buttons and the triggers?

what about the analog? (I hear they can be connected to digital... not nearly as good as an analog solution, but works for those games that require it).

Let me figure out if I have any extra cash around xmas...  I want two... not sure if I can get it in the budget though (just bough a ton of little things... and my wife is really starting to get pissed at me)

LOL I am in the same situation, just bought a WHOLE bunch of stuff and I am starting to get very EVIL stares from the woman. I will be able to do 4 buttons, start, and the triggers, unless you just want 3 (Maybe you got confused, there are 4 face buttons). I can also do the analog stick, which would work digitally but it wouldn't be any different from the digital being hacked. One thing is that a lot of the fighting games don't even support the analog stick, so you may want to be careful with that. So far I haven't encountered any problems whatsoever with just having the digital pad hacked. If there is a specific game that you need for analog, maybe I can do one analog and one digital. All the same to me.

I can do 2 shipped for $25, to combine the shipping.

the reason I would be interested in the analog hacked is that some games work with it and are playable with digital..

but I'm really interested in trying to hack a halls effect joystick to one at some point.  Not sure if it would be doable... but it would be great if it was already there...

but I should be able to get it to work 4 pots... but I don't have a joystick that handles it...  I'm hoping to break into the board and find out if I can tap into the ranges before they are combined..

You know I was thinking of that, since the hall effect sensors still work by varying voltage. A pot works the same way, so I am sure that it could be done. The thing is trying to find a suitable arcade joystick that uses pots. And also you would have to get around to using 4 pots on the joystick, because pots work by 49-0 is one direction and 51-100 is the other direction. I think it could be done.

What I have done with my setup is just hacked the pads to DB25 connectors, along with the IPAC inputs and the actual arcade controls. So all that I have to do is switch plugs between the DC pads and the Ipac inputs. I also have ordered a DB25 switch so I won't even have to unplug anything, just turn a knob to choose from DC and IPAC.

Thanks and happy holidays, Fred.

BTW: Wolf you have mail. :)

Great! I am glad that you got them in a reasonable amount of time. You better post some pics once you get them in your cab.

Thanks again, Fred.

EDIT: Oh and GGKoul, to ship them to Canada add about $3 to the total price for 2 of em.

  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
So for $25 you supply two dreamcast controllers and wires up the X,Y,B,A,L, and R buttons and the 4 directions and start button correct?  If so let me know via pm or email me at testicle187@hotmail.com and we have a deal :)

Cheers!

Do NFL Blitz and NBA Showtime work with no analog stick and just the digital hacked? If so, I may be interested in buying 2. Also, would you be willing to label the wires? Thanks, Doug.

BTW, got mine a week ago.  THANKS!

Works great..  Because of the holidays I haven't been able to setup a control panel.

I was hoping to get that done before doing a writeup on them.  But here is a quick recap.

Both where sent quick.  They came OVER packed... I was pretty sure I would do more damage cutting off the extra packing then if the package was dropped off a 10 story building.  So expect a solid packing job.

Next, the pads where well hacked and look MUCH cleaner then I can solder.  There was plenty of twisty ties to hold them all down and seem like the wires are very sturdy.

All the wires where marked (and I believe marked correctly  :)  but will have to wait until I get them installed.

I was hoping for both the analog and the digitals to be hacked...  Even if you don't use the wires it would be nice to have the extra non-used wires... Mainly because I might do it at some point.  I really haven't figured out if it will be an issue or now.. I believe most games that require them I wont be using an 8 way.  I guess the other reason was if they where hacked... I would buy a halls effect arcade joystick online and try and get them to work together...  But anyway... I knew they wouldn't be there... So not a real complaint...

Anyway...  Sum them up

Cheap price...
Sony brand (I believe)
Clean soldering job
Well marked
Fast shipping
Works well

Anything else you could ask for?

BEST 25 bucks I've spent in a LONG time!

Thanks!

Hey Lilwolf, I really appreciate your response on here. To tell you the truth, It never even crossed my mind to hack both the analog AND digital pads at the same time. Now that I think about it, that is a good idea and I will do so upon request.

I will try to figure a way to pack them safely and have them be easy to open :P

I have run across a problem around here. I just cannot find anywhere else to purchase the pads from. I think I have bought out every store in the area. If everybody that wants the pads hacked could send me the joysticks, or even better, just the pcb's of the joysticks to minimize shipping costs, it would be great. If I had to purchase every pad from Ebay I would be losing money, and therefore have to hike up prices to compensate.

Thanks again for the compliments, Fred.

Too bad on the limited pads.  If your really interested there is a toys-r-us by my house that used to have a HUGE box in the back that they where selling super cheap... I bought 4 from them at one point.  I can ask if they are interested in buying the whole box for a discount.  Not sure if it would be worth the shipping charges :)

Even though my dreamcast needs are now finished.  I would love to see a good cheap supply for others here.  Dreamcasts are GREAT in a cap.  I'm going through my collection now to find what games play well on my cab.  Over the weekend I FINALLY had time to cut out a control panel and wire up player 1 (one more TV show of wiring to get player two going).  I can say, it was the easiest job I've had in a LONG time!

Thanks for the hacked controllers!

This seems like a great idea to me to add to my cab, or a good excuse to start a new cab, maybe a driving cab?????  Does anyone have a link to a list of DC games with pictures prefereably?

Also, are they still making new DC games?

Here is a list of games (no pics though):

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,19067.0.html

They are not really making any more games for the DC. A new shooter was released recently ported from the Naomi platform though.

So do your hacked controllers have wires that you just solder to the bottom of the joystick, and to the leaf switches on the buttons?

I use the DB25 plugs to easily switch between the Ipac and the DC controllers. You don't need it for anything, the pads come with wires so that you can hook them up directly to your arcade buttons and joysticks.

You are correct.

1. Yes, I just remove it during the procedure for comfort.
2. Theoretically, I could pull 6 individual ground wires, but I do not see why you would need more than just 1 wire to daisy chain everything.
3. I can get a single +5v source from each pad, but I would not reccommend powering coin door lights with a power source from the pad, I would think it might put too much stress on it. A quick solution would be to find a cheap PC power supply, hack it so it is always on, and just draw any current you need from there, whether it be +5v or +12v.
4. At the moment I do not have ANY in the area. I bought them all out :( You will need to send me your SEGA brand pads for me to hack.

Thanks for your interest, Fred.

Hiub1,

Are you still doing these?  If so, do you have any pads, or do you need some?  Looks like you can get some Sega pads here:

http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/222550.asp

Looks like you can get 2 for ~$6 plus $2 EB Saver shipping  :)  (Used)

A couple of questions..

1) This allows memory cards/VMUs to still be used, right...?  For save games..
2) You said not to light coin doors with it, but the 5v could be used to power a P360, correct?  That's what I'd like to put on the control panel...

So, let me know if you're still doing this.  I'll try to figure out how to get you a couple of pads, unless you have some already..  (Or, I can just order them from EB and have them shipped to you  :)

THANX!

Okay, I've already stated elsewhere that I don't know squat about the DreamCast, but without any pictures, I really don't understand what this is.

It's a way "to put a DC in your arcade" but that's not enough info for me.  A wooden shelf could be described as a way "to put a DC in your arcade"

Anyone wanna explain to the newbie? :)

They take apart a Dreamcast controller. Then they solder wires from the original controller button contact points. These wires are basically extension cables for your buttons.

So a hacked Dreamcast controller is basically like an pre-wired I-PAC for your Dreamcast. You put it into a control panel and wire it up to arcade controls.
