How wide should a two player CP be?
« on: December 03, 2004, 08:31:35 pm »
For those of you that made a two player control player, I was wondering what dimensions you used, primarily how long/wide you had the top of the CP.  I had some wood cut at Home Depot and planned to have it 26" long by 12" wide, but now I am wondering if this is going to be comfortable enough for a two player CP with the 6 buttons to the right of each stick.
Any advice, experiances shared would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I am building  a 2 player also. and i'm also not sure about the size, but I guess the main thing is do you want to have a trackball in your design or even consider adding it in the future. and as far as depth, do you, or will you want a separate 4way and/or a spinner.

remember that doors can be as small as 29" wide
i'd just make it able to fit between that without the panel on
my 25" fits EXACTLY between my small doors in my apartment
i mean, with less than an inch to spare
so i'd just go find the smallest door in your place and work from that

Bah, I have two joysticks, 3 buttons each and a 3" trackball on my panel, and it's only 17" wide!
It looks great, and it's actually pretty comfortable.  I'll get pics if anyone is interested.  (I have a cat sitting on me right now, so I can't move)

The biggest factor to panel size is what controls do you require on your panel? My original panel that I built was 24" x 10" deep, it featured a 6 button 2 joystick layout with various administrative buttons. My new panel is a lot larger but right now I'm working on a panel that is 34" x 14" it has a lot of stuff on it, and is still a work in progress so it may end up being smaller then the current dimensions.

Well, what I am looking at is a two player CP with:
2 Happs competition joysticks
6 buttons to the right of each stick
1 pac-man 4-way stick right in the center
1 button to the right of the pac-man stick

If anyone has a panel that is 26" or smaller and has a setup similar to this, I'd sure love to see a picture!  (measurements would be great to since I have never really built anything before)

That is a bigger panel than basically every game ever made before Mortal Kombat. So yes, that is more than large enough.

Good size for a 2 player panel is 22" to 34".

Okay, here is a shot from the top.
(no, that is not the color scheme I'm going to use)

Below is a shot from the bottom, which shows how I fit all the parts.  (quite a bit of extra space actually)

Not bad!  I actually would want to mount the buttons to the right of both joysticks (for two right handed players) which will require me to have a bit more space.

MAN!!!  I never knew building a simple box could be so difficult (especially when you do not have a work bench).  All of my cuts are nice and crooked and when I FINALLY have a box that might work, I realize it may be too small.  I'm going to scream >:(

Hope everyone else is having better luck!!

CRAZY!!!!

Some people here stick more blank space in between players then you used for your whole panel~!!

That looks like an Assault. I sold mine a while back.

It's an Assault.

Everyone says I'm crazy for putting so much stuff on a single panel, but it works for me, so  :P

Now all I need to do is finish the overlay. (I need to cut out brass figures and other stuff.  It will be very impressive when I'm done.)

I really need to update my website.

Or even less if you're not from the US ;)

My CP is 60cm (~24") wide.  I have joystick+7 buttons per player on my main panel, but I could fit a lot more if I wanted...
