Physically installing PC into cabinet
« on: November 18, 2004, 06:26:54 am »
I've had a good search but can't find an answer to this specific question.....

My cab PC case is too big to fit inside. Therefore I'm planning on stripping the case of MB, poswer supply, CD drive and HD and placing them in seperately.  I've measured everything up and all will fit no problems.

However, a friend of mine said there could be trouble earthing the MB and other components. I was going to remove the MB and screw it to a wood panel in the cab using PCB feet (just like  the ones supplied by Ultimarc for their J-Pacs etc.)   The CD drive I was going to attach by using velcro.  Same thing with the HD but keeping the HD in it's case frame as it generates a lot of heat and could goo up the adhesive on the velcro if attached directly. I think I can make a hole in the back  of the cabinet for the power supply so i can plug the power lead straight intto the back just like the cab power lead does

Any thoughts on this?

I did exactly the same...

But for my hard drive I bolted it into a drive bay housing thing (the kind you get to fit 3.5" drives into large drive bays).  Then I just screwed it to the wood.  I don't have any other drives.

I attached the whole lot to a removable board, for maintenance reasons :)

I would worry about the velcro letting go after awhile.

I drilled two-holes through the board on each side of where I wanted to mount my drive and used some zip-strips to snug it down.

There is no need to earth your motherboard. Just mount it to the MDF with those PCB feet and it'll work fine.

I've used velcro to hold a hard drive directly on the side of a case before, really didn't have any issues with it falling off or gooing up. Although I was also using a 2.5 inch drive and some industrial strength velcro.

I belive the motherboard is grounded from the power supply.  Which in turn is grounded to the outlet in you house. Which is grounded to the ground somewhere around the circuit breaker( or i could be horribly wrong.)  NEwayz think about it does a metal part of your case actually touch the ground?

yes, for the very reason you just explained!! through the earth wire it does actually connect to the ground.

but im still not sure that the motherboard itself is grounded (but there i could be wrong) as it is only low voltage.

It won't be a problem for me. The MB will be installed vertically on the back of a panel inside the cab. But the drives will be sat on the top of another panel just inches away over the 90 degree corner. The velcro will just hold them in position flat to the board. They won't be hanging from a side panel or anything like that.

Putting a motherboard on PCB feet and attaching it to wood is fine.

end of story.

Mine had a ground strap between the motherboard & the power supply housing, so I added one when installed said items into my cab. Don't know that it was absolutely necessary, but I also don't think it could hurt.
