Shipping cabinets to the UK?
« on: October 22, 2004, 09:14:05 am »
The choice and cost of 2nd hand cabinets in US are amazing when compared to those available in the UK.

I am just wondering about getting cabs shipped to the the UK from the US.

Has anyone done this. I assume there are shipping companies to handle such thing? What is the logistics of it? What sort of costs are involved?

If the cabs are used/beatup, do you still have to pay import duty and vat?

how is any duty calculated? based on declared value of the cab?

Is it feasible, or just not worth the hastle/cost in the end?

I don't know much about it, but here's what I think:

It would cost an arm and a leg to ship,
The shipping company would probably end up breaking it,
You would probably be charged duty (I've no idea how much, or how it would be calculated),
You would end up wondering why you bothered!

Personally it is something I would avoid.

I'd advise against it, I've had several deliveries from the states to Ireland and the costs are crippling (thats just for a 33" monitor and another seperate order of a flat pack cocktail cab
). Best bet is to keep an eye on ebay or ask your local arcade machine distributor if they have any old cabs they would be willing to part with.

Have you anything particular in mind?

I used to be in shipping and forwarding for over 10 years. I can tell you that shipping cabs will be expensive, but the more you ship the cheaper they become (per unit).  If you managed to get enough of them together you'd be better off with a 20' container. That should solve the problem of damage as you can control the loading and unloading of them at each end.

But are youu gonna ship that many cabs?  :-\  What would you do with them all?  Duties and taxes are based on the final invoice value and whatever customs tariff number they are declared under when they are imported.

I agree that cabs in the US are much cheaper than here. I paid

i was thinking more about classics - eg. defender, galaga, pacman, asteroids, tempest etc...

i see some come up on ebay.co.uk but the prices seen too much. especially when you see the price they go for at auction in the US
