I use MsPac/Galag reunion 4 ways in all my projects and they are excellent. I understand they can be tricky to mount in wood but my control panels are steel, there is a mounting plate you can buy though.

1up has an active thread right now on a switchable 4-way/Q-bert stick.  Here's a relevant quote from that thread that directly applies to your inquiry:

"...In my opinion, the T-stick sucks.  The twist-to-convert mechanism is brilliant, too bad it's not on a different joystick.  But it has about 1/4" throw in any direction, which is too small for any good Ms Pac-Man action, and really not good if you have any wrist pain.

The absolute best balltop for maze games is the J-stick, with a medium throw, light spring tension and a nicely shaped restrictor, this is the stick that won out in heavy playtesting by many different people, and I tried everything from a T-stick to an E-stick, to a super with a balltop hacked on.  Everyone absolutely loved this stick during our office-wide Ms. Pac-Man playoff!  The light spring tension makes for quick turnarounds when the ghosts reverse direction, and the perfectly rounded restrictor gives positive feedback when you hit the corners, but never sticks when you make a turn.  1UP approved!"

try the bettson 4 way with the long shaft.  Its a red ball top for the space invader remake, I think.  It will work on a wood panel and has a diamond pattern.

Are the T-Stiks really that bad?  I just ordered two T-Stik plusses for my Mame cab as I want to be able to switch between 4/8  ways from the top, and I don't have much space for a dedicated 4-way.

Surely there are people out there who love their T-Stiks? I really hope these sticks are not gonna be a pile of poo.   :-[

I absolutely love my t-stiks, I couldn't be happier with them. I like the shorter throw and tighter, clicky action.
