hehe, and I'm showing my age when I say "Why so hopped up over Metal Slug?"  There were many great 80s arcade games just like it.  I'm not saying it's bad, but it's nothing special or unique.

Which ones?  The Metal Slugs have a unique artistic quality, great music and so much going on. I can't think of any 80's games that are "just like it". By the way, I graduated in 84 and did not hang out in the arcades much after that, so when I say 80's, I mean early to mid 80's.

Name some more slug like games so I can play them too.

It's just a platform shooter.  The concept is old.  Yeah, it has good graphics for it's time and such, but as time progressess technology gets better.

Like I said, I like metal slug, it;s fun.  But I don;t see why some people have a "religious" experience over it.  It seems where ever I go, any forum I visit, tons of metal slugs posts.

metal slug reminds me of a cross between contra and caveman ninja and narc.  narc being my altime favorite platform shooter.

Get zinc, play striker2, awesome plateform game.

Snaaake, we get it, I heard on this board many times you like you like caddilacs and dinosaurs:)

Actaully, the games you posted are platform fighters, not platform shooters.  Not quite like metal slug.

For the record......
:)

C&D is NOT at all like metal slug and any other platform shooters... First off it's not even a platform game it's a  2 1/2D side scroller.  Secondly the weapons in it are bonus weapon items which have been around since the double dragon games.  If you don't have at least one gun around all the time then technically it's nto a shooter.  As for it being better than metal slug, it's certainly too different a style of game to make that comparison.  It's like saying robocop is better than pacman...... it's merely personal opinon since you can't compare those games.

Also for the record... (here I go again)

The metal slug series is NOT like any other platform shooter.  First off this was the first game of it's type to impliment moving bosses at the end.  It may not seem like a lot, but for it's time it was a huge breakthrough.  The only game prior to it that even compared in terms of gameplay was contra.  It surpasses contra in the following ways:  (All other platforms prior to metal slug behaved like contra btw.)

#1 Gradiated backgrounds.  In metal slug you can actually climb over the sand bags instead of jumping over them like an idiot... making yourself more open for bullet-fire.

#2 The bullets actually move at a more realistic speed.  Prior to this all platformers had really slow moving bullets so you could get out of the way after it's been shot.  With the exception of speciality weapons and bosses, this is not the case of metal slug, making it a much faster game.

#3  A true secondary weapon.  Now I know what your thinking, "that's nothing new." But in this case it actually is.  Prior to metal slug  all secondary weapons were another gun... which might have a different firing pattern, but it was still a gun.  With the addition of grenades that actually arch, it added a new gameplay dynamic in that you could arch a grenade over a bunker and shoot at a guy on a tower while you jump to throw it.

#4 The great ai.  Now I know the mslug thugs aren't increadibly smartbut think about it.  If you jump over a bunker they will eventually follow.  You jump down, they jump down.  You climb up so do they.  before mslug all generic charcters simply ran back and forth on thier own little platform and that was pretty much it.

#5 The great timing.  Experts say that the reason mario became so popular is the great pacing in his games.  The same is true for metal slug.  The pace of everything is perfect.  It's just enough to still seem exciting and yet slow enough to where you do get frustrated.

Metal slug is the last of the platfrom side scrolling shooters and for good reason.  It is simply the best out there.  It's the ultimate evolution in the genre, it can't be taken any further.  That's why all side-scroller fans agree that it's the best.  Yeah there are some similarities, but to compare it to a normal side scroller is like comparing quake to wolfenstein.... it's evolved way beyond what the older ones were.

Fast response.  Dude, I've pointed this out to you before.  you contradict yourself many times.  It makes you seem more unreliable.  I don't want this post to turn into an ugly post.  It's a good thread

To add to the post.
I've been testing my trackball with quantum, it's nutz fun.. .  I've also been playing around with btoads, gotta love the simplicity of that game.

I cannot believe no-one has mentioned Track n Field and Hyper Sports. I cannot stops playing these two games. My favourites by far.

And no mention of GunSmoke. Play this game!

Commando, Green Beret, Kung Fu Master. My favourites, and from my era.

Track and field came up at 12pm a few weeks after I got my new keyboard encoder... why?  I was about to go to sleep and realized I hadn't tried it (since it sucked with a keyboard)... I kept my wife up until 2 in the morning and she was pissed!  GREAT GAME!  carpol tunnel will never allow another game like it to be made  ;D

As for METAL SLUG!  The reason why it should be in this list is its just damn fun to play!  GREAT GAME!  GREAT GRAPHICS!  GREAT GAMEPLAY!  GREAT WEAPONS!  I was a little disappointed in the sequals since they all seemed to be the same with new vehicles.  I was hoping for some new graphics with the same gameplay.  Maybe on a hardware system it could happen.

But see that's no fun... saying a game is great doesn't prove anything until you disect it and tell everyone why it's great. ;) :P

Ok, I found another one that I could not stop playing last night. Turf Master, the NeoGeo golf game absolutely rocks.

By the way youngsters, I was born in 66 and graduated in 84. There was an Arcade within walking distance of my highschool called Alladins Castle. Bright Lights, loud music, classic games. I am not condoning this at all, but a perfect day back then consisted of skipping school, going to Dunderbaks for a huge pretzel (stealing St. Pauli Girl beer upstairs) and going to Alladin's Castle with a roll of quarters to play Berzerk, Battlezone and Missile Command.

By the way, we could go to Alladin's anytime during the day, even on school days without getting hassled. Most of the workers were friends that got out of school early to work.

The reason I say all this is because the Neo Geo games are completely foreign to me. Having just discovered them, I am knocked out by the art, music and playability. I am really digging the neo's.

I was born in 79 so my gaming peak was around 90-93... the birth of the streetfighter.  I'm very good regarding knowledge of games from that era, that's why I can analize them as if they were a novel.

We had an old theatre that had classics as well as the modern games so I was very fortunate.  I got schooling in galaga and galaxy force, sinistar and streeet fighter 2. (not turbo, super hyper mega, just plain old street fighter 2)  ;)

I too was born in '79.  My fondest memories are of Outrun, After Burner, Super Hang On, Power Drift, Thunder Blade, Space Harrier etc.  Shame these are all broken / missing from the current MAME :(  My other favorites were RoadBlasters, Operation Wolf, Pacland, Super Mario Bros & World Cup '90 which play great in MAME ;D

I think when I got a Mega Drive in the 90's I got more into SF2 / Mortal Kombat etc.

I only got to play on these games when on holiday about once or twice a year tho, since there was no arcade near where I live :(

kgriffin,

I was born in 1965 and graduated in 1983.  There were two arcdes within a block of my high school, one was called "Fun Zone" and the other was "Dennis the Menace".  My friends and I were often there for hours after school. We skipped a lot of classes too.  I can only think of one time when school officials came around checking ID's.

I love turfmasters... I like the different strategy you can employ with different players strengths... I tend to like the veteran guy from germany (van lendle or something?  i forget if he's the "technician" or the shot maker... he's NOT the tom kite looking guy)  but every once in a while I like to play as the power golfer and sweat out the putts with his unrefined (low sensitivity/big bubbles).

I was born in the spirit of '76/finished  H.S. in 94 ... so I remember playing pacman/donkey kong etc... even moon cresta.  My arcade heyday peaked right after Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II CE.

FWIW I tried Metal Slug 1 and 2 and think its fun...  although now that I have unlimited quarters those type games are less fun, as there is less risk in losing your "life" - you just go continue nutz.

I used to have a couple of "secret" games that were fun that I never saw in an arcade but I can't remember the names -> it's gonna take me forever to find it outa the 1600 or so unique MAME roms now...

Born in 69 here.  And thats why I was mentioning before... that all the classics that people are talking about I don't consider secrets... but what mame is about.

but the secrets for me is some of the new games I've never heard of are actually fun!

and I worked at an arcade before the streetfighter days.  And we would open up the guantlet machines and give infanite health... then wait until we got to a 'your shot hurt other players' and have HUGE death matches :)

I miss those games... remember afterburner and it's great cabinets.  The stick would move by itself when in attract.  That used to amaze me. :)  Sega always made the craziest cabinets.  That's kind of a problem too.  I play all of these games now via finalburn and, well, they all suck now.  I think those super-cool force feedback cockpits had a lot to do with the gameplay.

Still I wish dave would maybe pick up emu work again and try to add these to the current build of mame.  It's a shame that we have games from 2000 in there but games from the 80's and 90's are still left out.  It also seems like naomi will be emulated before the cps3 system, which is also a shame.

I was born in '66 graduated in '84 we had 3 arcades to go to Jungle Jims at the mall, Aladins Castle at the other mall and a place called porky's. At Porky's they would give you a Porky's T-shirt if you got the high score on a machine,When I got high score on scramble that was probably my best arcade memory.btw the last machines I remember the arcades getting before I quit going were Track and Field and
Crystal Castles. My parents eventually "banned" me from Porky's because you could smoke there and not at the other arcades so it tended to attract a diiferent crowd and they would bust someone for drugs every few weeks. But that never kept me from going.

I'm right there with you Papaw Slug. Same age. Track and Field was a big draw while I was still at the arcades. We used to keep a plastic spoon with us to play it with. We found you could run like hell by sliding the spoon back and forth over the two buttons. Set many a record using this technique.

I have to add a game that came out the yearI was born
http://www.klov.com/F/Fire_Truck.html

Read the KLOV description.
" The fire truck never reaches a fire or any specific destination! "

I want to know the promo speech in order to get the game produced.  "Ok, we have a fire truck, but no fire"

Agreed.  I'd like to see maybe games up to '94ish (or older) take priority over the new stuff.  Go into an arcade now and nearly ALL cabinets have some wierd / special controller so most of these are going to suck on a PC anyway.

I'm right there with you Papaw Slug. Same age. Track and Field was a big draw while I was still at the arcades. We used to keep a plastic spoon with us to play it with. We found you could run like hell by sliding the spoon back and forth over the two buttons. Set many a record using this technique.

hehe, I used a pencil!  then when people I was with started saying that it was cheating, I learned how to use three fingers in each hand... I can now do it faster!

Metal slug is the last of the platfrom side scrolling shooters and for good reason.  It is simply the best out there.  It's the ultimate evolution in the genre, it can't be taken any further.

Someone once said something very similar.
"There is nothing more to invent. All the original ideas have already been invented." President of the Patent Office in the 1800's.

Anytime I hear someone say this it tells me they suffer from an extreme lack of vision. It can ALWAYS be taken further! You just have to wait for the right person to make it happen.

Here's a few quotes from Henry Ford:

"He can who thinks he can, and he can't who thinks he can't. This is an inexorable, indisputable law."

"I cannot discover that anyone knows enough to say definitely what is and what is not possible. "
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

When someone makes a better platform shooter than metal slug it will have something so radically different in it that it will create a new genre.  Therefore I still stand by my orignal statement. ;P  Metal Slug has everything that's ever been in a platform shooter and more.  Any truely orignal additions to it would produce a different style of game.

OK, I feel pretty young here, graduating in 2000 and all.

Now, I have to agree that Metal Slug is the best put together platform shooter out there, but kind of like Contra and all the silly ones that followed, anything after the first is just an elaborate repeat.

I agree that the basic concept has been maxed out, but there needs to be some variety. Sometimes I'll get bored and play one of the Metal Slugs at random and I won't even know if I'm playing a different one from the last time or not because they all seem like barely changed versions of each other.

Still a great game though.

I was playing a few games last night and I remebered another old game that is obscure but fun.

Pulsar.

I played this a lot in the arcade.  It is not very complex, but the game play is quick and challenging. I actually prefer it to Berzerk, which is another maze shooter from the same era.
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!

You are making me feel really old.

Grandpa Slug,  some of us would not consider you too old.

I was born in 1949 and graduated from HS in 67 and college in 73.  They didn't have arcades when I was a kid but they did have pinball machines at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) once a year.  Some of the older electromechanical arcade machines as well. I played baseball with the mechanical bat and ramp that went up and down for home runs when I was in my early teens.

Of all of the MAME games that I have played for some reason I have an attachment to the Metal Slug series.  I think it is just that I find MS really fun.

Oh, man!  Thanks for letting me know about Track and Field!  That game is totally rad.

I just recently moved into my parents' house and they're not too thrilled about housing the arcade cabinet there.  I had to talk somebody into putting it in their place.  The other night I played Track and Field (without the arcade cab) all night long with some friends, and when my track-star friend heard about it he suddenly became all into having the machine in his apartment.  Yahoo!

So anyway, we got to play on the cabinet tonight.  Our quickest method of running is to use our fists and pound on the buttons.  Now there's blood stains all over the beautiful wooden control panel (Curses!  I knew I should have put some kind of laminent on there).

So much fun.
