Scratch-Built 'Track & Field' CT.. Put to Bed! :)
« on: August 30, 2004, 07:35:03 pm »
Hopefully very soon, I'll be able to commence a replica of the beautifully simplistic 'Track & Field' Cocktail.

Jakobud is again! so graciously compiling cabinet plans for this cocktail.

I'll start ordering the parts in the next few weeks.

I am however not going to jamma this one. ?It will asthetically look like a T&F, with the lovely 80's woodgrain and silkcreened CPO's. ?However, internals will be set up for Mame & MameWah, but only running the Track & Field related, 3 button layout working roms (as used by T&F).

They are:
Track & Field
Hyper Sports
'88 Games
Gold Medalist
RecordBreaker &
Field Day.

Stay Tuned!

That's excellent. Those are way up there on my favorite games list, although I've never seen nor played the cocktail version of the game. It looks cool though. Keep us posted on this project!!!

By the way, where do you get the cocktail versions of those games,or how do you play the regular versions in cocktail mode?

The PCB(or ROM for Mame) has a dip switch which specifically relates to 'Table' or 'Upright'.

With this dip switch set to 'Table', the screen flips for players 3 & 4, hence the opposite control panel.

great looking cab!
Make that CP nice and strong!
Ive never noticed the detachable elevation base before .. very cool idea as Track &field IMO would be easier to play standing (with arms furiously banging buttons)
We used to put  the plastic tube containers ( the ones that held $5 of 20c or quaters ) over 2 fingers and "stroke?" the run buttons side to side one handed if you know what i mean... maybe not ... I'll stop talking now.

Yeah, anyone who's a fan of that game from back in the day knows exactly what you're talking about. Many people just used a pencil. I ran the old fashioned way (with my fingers) hitting two fingers on each key (pointer and middle, so 4 fingers going) and I could usually beat or atleast match the pencil runners.

What a great game!!

How is the glass placed on these types of cocktails?  I ask because I too am in the process of designing one similar to this, although with 3 control panels.  I'm planning on having the monitor on a hinge, much like the Midway style cocktail cabinets and I think that's where I'm running into my problem.  Here's a cardboard mockup to give an idea of how it will look:  http://www.twistedrails.com/cardboard_mockup.jpg

Have the dimensions been completed yet? I checked Jakobud's site and didn't see them posted.

Cheers.

Any photo updates on the project?

I'm still in the planning and parts stage Goofy.  I like to have all my parts, required for the build, prior to commencement.  Then it's head down and ass up!

The plans are still at compilation stage via Jakobud, but close to completion.

This project is still high on my list.  However 6 months(and ongoing) of family based woes have stalled it.

As soon as my mates found out the tools(and brain) were recently operational again, one of them dropped an old Aussie Lowboy, in my small workshop, to renovate and mame.   I'm also 15% through building a 'Jungle Hunt' themed mame Bartop for the kids(alright....and me!).

Next project will definatley be the T&F replica.

Wade,  I'll contact you again in the near future if I require any info on this cab.

Cheers and game on again.

Are you going to make an exact replica, or will you be doing any changes? If you are making any changes then you might want to examine the Atari Football and Dunk Shot cocktails (Atari Dunk Shot, not SEGA), as they look very similar but have cleaner lines and hold bigger monitors.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

G'day Paige.

Making an exact replica in my situation and with the lack of resources available down here in the bottom corner of the globe would be overstating.

I am however going to attempt to make an externally asthetic replica of the T&F as accurate as my skills, and the resources available, allow.

I still have this game, so if you need more details on the assembly or the parts, measurements etc, just let me know!

BTW, Jakobud's measurements are good, but the base was an estimate.  Don't know if you plan to build that part or not.  I have that piece as well and can get the exact height of it.  It has rounded corners and it is slightly shorter than in his plans.

It would be impossible to build an exact replica of this game, unless the person has special tools and can bend his own control panels.  However, even using just wood, a replica could be made which looks nearly identical.  It could be indistinguishable in a photo or to the casual observer.

Spriggy, email me about some tips for the CP artwork as well!

TTYL,
Wade

Luckily I have access to a sheet metal fabrication and press shop up the road, so pressing up the panels won't be a problem.

Spriggy,

If you have a way to bend heavy sheetmetal then you can make it look exactly the same from the outside.  The hinges are unusual but you could use piano style long hinges in place of them if you got creative on the underside of the CP's.  No one would look down under there anyway. :)

I'll be using Wade's dimensions which Jakobud has compiled in CAD.  They are up at his site ...http://www.jakobud.com/cabinetPlans.php ... if you aren't aware already that is!

Wade also supplied me with some excellent pics of his cabinet during and after his restoration, which I'll be using as reference.  The pdf of the T&F cocktail contains some excellent cross-section and reference pics as well.

Once I've finished my run of 3 bartops that are already pre-sold, I'm starting on the planning stage of the T&F.  The only info I have on my project at this stage, is what I've just mentioned.

Feel free to ask for any help.

cheers

DROOOOLLL!!! Hyper Sports was my ALL time FAVE!  It is the reason I will be building my own mame system.  This is the first cocktail cab that I like.  I had not thought about a 'stand up' cocktail.

I was a 2 finger per button 'runner' as well, I could keep up with the pencil/plastic comb guys as well..

p.s. wow.. plastic comb, do they make those anymore.. lol

i assume you are going to use leaf switches?

i figure microswitiches wouldn't feel right for track and field

ps. do you know a good supplier of new leaf switches (full assembly)?

Down in Perth Western Australia, nearly everything was micro's..except for the old old machines and the occassional original classic.  Hence, I really only knew micros.  Haven't decided yet.  The happs micros aren't overly fantastic for the game.  Haven't tried wico micro's but will be buying some soon to test.  Leafs will probably be the way I go.

You can get full assemblies @ Bob Roberts.....http://www.therealbobroberts.com/

I'm still juggling 3 more bartops as well as renovating and maming my mates aussie LAI lowboy (he wants it covered in YELLOW SHAGPILE FUR!!?)... so she's on hold probably for the next 2 months.

You could add Numan Athletics to the list. Plays like track and field but with superheros and repetitive early 90's dance tunes. Good fun though!
Your Jungle MAME inspired my mate to build a bartop! He wanted a cab but lives at home with his parents so hasn't got the space. I think he's going top do a Mortal Kombat theme with single player controls and a plug in controller for player 2.
I can't wait to see this cocktail! It's gonna be cool 8)

WELL.... AGAIN

As mentioned in an old thread Reply #28 on: November 25, 2005, 10:40:30 AM.... I was still in the same situation until recently.   Now with the illness crap aside and the last of the house stuff full steam ahead.. this project is still on the no 1. list of return builds (side by side with my 'Cosmic Guerilla' resto)

So.. as I was strolling through this thread http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=62330.msg618500#msg618500 ('Jakobuds incorrect widebody dims').. I noticed Wade mentioned the T& F cocktail.. which brought back ideas about this project.

So.. having fairly recently learnt to use 'Sketchup 5 Pro' when designing my metal patio.. and a few hours spare @ work....I started playing with the T&F dims in SU5, so that I will have a dimensioned 3d model, ready to go for when I eventually start this beast.  I've PM'd Wade to see if he'll work with me again, and check the dims of my model. (#update - Wade's on board#)

When it's done, I'll offer it up to anyone who wants it.  I will not be doing a 2d cad plan.  I'll just dimension the 3d model in SU5, as well as pulling the individual panels apart and dimensioning them.  They will be in jpg format.

Wish me luck..... for god sake please!!!!! :hissy:

Drew, Just for your info... I've emailed a list of dimensions I need to Wade'O.. so should get them relatively soon.  I've done everything I can on the model based on Jakobuds plans (from Wade's dimensions).
I have ---steaming pile of meadow muffin----loads of pics from Wade.. hence have used them as reference.
I've used a bit of artistic license on some of the dimensions for internal mounting panels.. like the small side panels the CP and Glass sit-on.  I obviously used the pics as reference to get them as visually close as possible.  They look the same or very similar, but may be out by small fractions.  Not too worried as you won't see them AT ALL when she's together... but the "looking original' premise still stands rather upright! :P :)
I think Wade has better things to worry about than measuring a 1" by 2" piece of dust collecting ply that sits on the inside bottom left of the cab!!  Like his up and coming clone (new baby)! ;D

Anyway, will dimension the ---smurfette--- as soon as the model is updated and throw u the lot.  I won't be building my T&F 'till I get this other son of a ---smurfette--- outta the way (see attached)  :dizzy: :-\

Schweet!  You'll be done with yours before I even think about mine probably ;D

I dunno if the CAD program you (or whoever) is using can spit out a cut list for parts, but if not, I've got a program that should do that, and if need be, I'll run it through that so that folks can optimize their materials and know just what the heck they'll have to buy when they go to the hardware store.

I dunno if anyone's paying attention, but if the Joust cocktail gets completed, I can offer the same thing (although any rounded/angled pieces will simply be squared off and final shapes will have to be handled by the cab creator).

....and I dunno if that's just a carport or a pergola for the house, but I've got a recent Fine Homebuilding issue that you might be interested in.  PM me if you want some more details about the magazine.  This is the issue I've got:  http://www.taunton.com/store/pages/fh_toc_178.asp

I know the pic doesn't really do it justice, but the table of contents is there, so..... :dunno

Cheers Drew.  Yeh it's a pergola that I'm building off the side of the house (13.5 metres long (44+ feet)  = plenty of room for a spa, LCD tv, table, lounge and T&F cocktail!!! ;D).  Thanks for the reference to the mag.  This one's being built outta glavinised and colorbonded steel.. so I'm not sure the article will help.  Looks like it's reference to wood based pergolas.  Still..... would be interesting ta read!

Thanx

I'm planning to take a little time to deal with the T&F and also check the Moon Patrol plans some time over this weekend.  So stay tuned. :)

Cool Wade.  I've added a few brackets and CP wiring access holes.  I'm done until new dims arrive.  8)  Because I don't have access to any CP hinges that resemble the original T&F ones, I've created a simple right angle bracket to which a normal straight hinge can be attached too.  It will operate the same way as the original.
