Original Tempest spinner in wood panel?

I really like the idea of using a genuine Tempest spinner (and I have access to one), but the CP I'm planning will not be metal.  Furthermore, I'd really like to have no bolts or rivets on my CP surface (I'm going to countersink the trackball and joystick bolts so they're under the overlay).  Is there any conceivable way to mount one of these securely in a wood panel so only the shaft comes through the overlay?  And yes, I know that Oscar Controls sells a replica with a longer shaft, but I'd prefer to use this genuine Tempest part if I can.

If you have a router you could use a metal plate to mount the Tempest spinner, and route the wood so it is flush (ie: 1/8" plate, 1/8" recess in wood)

As for attaching the plate to the wood permanatly...

There are very powerfull adhesives to consider, like the black caulk used to 'glue' winshields in place, I've changed a few windshields in my day and that caulk is so super powerfull it has to be sawed with a wire saw from the chassis, it takes two guys nearly an hour to saw the windshield out of it's adhesive.

Although I've never 'glued' metal to wood, if I had to I'd use the black winshield caulk, try it on a test piece...

Another thing to consider, the spinner won't be 'pulled up' on too much, it probably dosen't require a super resistant bond.

Alternately you could weld bolts to the bottom of the plate, and attach them through the wood with nuts.

Hmmm... that's a thought.  I might consider JB Weld.  Don't know why I didn't think of that already - I use JB Weld for everything (it's kind of my Duct Tape).

I guess the remaining concern I have is that the gap between the spinner's knob and housing might be less than the thickness of the plexi overlay.  I might have to go with fairly thin plexi.

Why would you prefer a 20 yr old (and probably extremely worn) spinner to a brand new replica that will work for your application?

I've used Oscar's spinners, and the quality of them is as good, or better, than the quality was on the Tempest spinners when they were new.

In addition to the hassle of getting the thing mounted, you should also consider that you are going to have to "reconfigure" the optics on it, or buy an optic card from Oscar anyway.

You're right, and I'll probably end up going with the replica from Oscar.  It's just that the idea of knowing it's a "real" Tempest spinner appeals to me (guess it's a karma thing or something).  And it has some NOS parts in it, so it's not in bad shape.  But I'll probably get the replica from Oscar.

dude, from what I have heard through the grapevine a lot of Tempest owners have actually been replacing their original spinners with the Oscar one.

Were you looking at that Tempest spinner on eBay? Just curious. BTW, a Tempest cabinet sans board and monitor (and power supply?) went for about $105 the other day. I almost bought it just for the parts (spinner, cone buttons, marquee, coin door, etc), but I didn't want to spend more than $75 plus shipping.

I'm all for authenticity on my cab--until it interferes with gameplay.

My reverse button is much closer to the joystick for Defender on my cab, Moon Patrol uses buttons for fwd/rev, and Tempest has the spinner on the left where it SHOULD have been.

I do have real Tron sticks on my cab though.
Not for authenticity, but because there is nothing I've ever seen that can replace them effectively.
