Wiring Connectors
« on: July 28, 2004, 02:36:59 pm »
I had asked this question before - but along with some other ones - so it got kinda buried within the post.  So here goes again.

I am building a modular panel.  It is going to have panels which interface with Ipac, OptiPac, and DruidRotary.  Can I simplify the connectors by using the computer PS GND, 5V, and 12V(TB light) directly to controls.  Therefore eliminating the need to string the many GND and 5V lines from the different interface boards.  It seems to be electrically sound (at least to me) - since the boards are pulling there power from PS.

Basically what I am trying to avoid is - example: Ikari joystick needing two GND lines (from Druid board and Ipac Board).

Is there a problem with my logic?

Sounds good to me, I always wire stuff right to the PSU via butt connectors.

Make them removable by using male molex headers.

Wiring 12v fans to the 5v line makes for very quiet cooling too.

(logically you'd want to double the number of fans if they are running at half voltage)

For those reading this post who don't know : the yellow wire on your computer power supply molex (4 pin) header is 12volts, the red line is 5volts. Black is ground.

The color scheme on fans, however, changes, the fans in a computer typically have red wires for 12volt, yellow for sensor, and black for ground.

Groovy?

I know this is an older post but I'm working on my wiring right now.  If I have an Optipac in my control panel that would provide the power for my 360's why would I want to run a line from the pc power supply?  Any benefits one way over the other?
