In case anyone else here is an idiot, if you click on the little "new" picture next to a thread, it will open the thread and scroll down to the first reply that you haven't read. I always thought they were there to show you that there is a new reply in the thread. Wow. So that is why I scored so low on the IQ thread. Hmmmm.

Yeah, I love the 'new' button.

There is another forum I frequent that also uses 'new' icons (it's not running YABBSE, regretablly).  Unfortunately, if you click it, it brings you to the newest message in that thread, but marks all messages as read.
