Sitdown cab design, opinions wanted
« on: June 21, 2004, 04:38:05 am »
After some research (also in this thread: http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=20166 - I started this new thread because that thread seemed like a good start for sitdown cab dimension resource), I started sketching my sitdown cab design. See attached picture.
Basically the cab comes in 3 pieces (base- with steeringwheel and pedals, monitor cover,  chair) . The chair can move underneath the base for a few reasons: first to make it fun for both short and tall players, second it saves space when I'm not using the cab.
Please, let me know what you think!

ps. I do not yet have the exact dimensions, still tinkering with that one (my wife keeps laughing when I'm sitting on boxes and keep moving those around as prototype).

Seems like a great design so far.
It will look even better once you have the real stuff!

Looks Good!

Do you have any formal plans that you could share?  As I'm interested in creating a Driving Cab as well.

Let me know.

As soon as I have the dimensions figured out, I'll share the plans. These are just doodles of what the cab will probably look like.
I will most likely stick to this design (unless there are good idea's mentiones here that advise otherwise).

I don't know if these are in perspective.

but it seems like the gas pedal is a little high.

You might consider changing the sliding mechanism to be a little smaller (just a single board with some slats on the bottom to make sure it slides straight) should be enough.

What system/s are you going to put in it?  Dreamcast has some really nice driving games and hacks well into a true arcade monitor.  I don't believe there is a ps2 or xbox -> arcade monitor hack yet (is there)?  Or  just a PC?

I agree the pedals look a bit high...maybe not depending how you are sat.

It would be very easy to hack a XBox & PS2 (& DC) Scart video lead to an arcade monitor...might be tricky to get the Scart lead in the US (www.lik-sang.com probably have them).  Also I'm not sure if NTSC consoles are wired different to PAL ones so I don't know if the Scart lead would work...I think it would tho.

Design looks great tho :)

I plan to put a PS2 in there. I'm planning to have the new 900degree Gran Turismo 4 steering wheel. I'm fond of the GT series and I really like BurnOut 2.
I haven't found good forcefeedback steeringwheels for the XBox yet (though with the prospect of "Outrun 2" the XBox is very tempting!)

Since I live in the Netherlands, no problem of getting a SCART lead, I have a bunch of those lying around. SCART is the standar for video connections over here.
