Well, thanks for the compliment.  It took a lot of drawings on the backs of napkins and scrap paper to come up with the final design, so I

Here is a new pic of our jukebox project.  I just stuck the speaker grilles on the front so you can see where they're going to go.  There's a big ole subwoofer in the bottom of the cab, but we're undecided if it sounds better coming out the back or the front.

Everything is wired up and lit except for the trackball at this point.  And there are two sets of controls so you have the option of using the trackball or the arrow keys.  Our toddler navigates it pretty easily, so I'm happy with the controls at this point.

I wish we had a nicer monitor, but we were going for the cheapest route at this point.  We may update it later.  The front section opens to allow a keyboard to slide out.  This will also let us stick CDs in the computer if we want to do that.  There will also be a USB outlet on the front to allow quick downloads of new music with a memory key.

Happs makes a triangle button.  Dunno what it's specifically named, but search around there, you'll find it.

What size monitor is that in there?  After seeing your project, I liked the shape and size, but wondered how all my 15" monitors would look sitting in such a big box and how to do dual monitors, (I thought to myself, they'd look like @$$).  I REALLY like your solution and now want to start on my own, based off a Rock-ola, but same monitor/speaker solution.  GREAT/FANTASTIC/AWESOME idea...also, what size speakers are those?

The sub placement will make little to no difference unless you have some sort of port/opening for it.  Otherwise, you've just put your sub (which is usually non-directional) inside another box.  If you can, remove a panel to see what it would sound like (kinda...not a real precise method) with a port/opening.

Thanks y'all for the compliments... and the marriage proposal - har har!  Since we've kinda been designing it as we go, it's encouraging to hear that it's looks okay to others so far.  I plan on getting a lot more done on Saturday, so I hope to post some more progress pics over the weekend.

Looks great!  One nice thing is that it is easily recognizable as a jukebox. Even in the first pic it gives off Jukebox vibes.

I'm working on my own jukebox currently - I was thinking about getting lazy and not recessing the buttons but after seeing how they look on yours... well I've got some more work cut out for me this weekend  

Speaking of the buttons what are you using to power yours?  And have you tried them out lit yet?  I've heard reports that they get warm.

Also what software are you planning on running?

Hi!  I bought the illuminated pushbuttons from Happs, and a 3-way LED for the trackball.  They're just wired up to the PC's power supply.  I hadn't noticed the buttons getting warm yet, but it's only been on a couple hours at a time.  I haven't really stress tested 'em yet.  Right now, the wires are just temporarily rigged up, but that's today's project.  So, once that's done, I'll try leaving it running for several hours and let you know if they heat up at all.  I've got Mark Schwartz' Arcade Jukebox running on the PC.  I'm using a very old computer that probably couldn't handle some of the newer software.  Plus, I really liked the jukebox-y feel of this one best.   Well, I'm off to finish up some wiring.  Can't wait to hear how yours turns out, too!

I'm not sure about the paint yet.  I'm really struggling with the artistic part of this.  I had a tough time finding jukebox-related side art anywhere, so I considered routering a grooved design in the side and installing a light rope.  On a test piece of wood, it looked pretty good.  You can see pics here (http://www.kingcupcottage.com/arcade/juke7.jpg) and here (http://www.kingcupcottage.com/arcade/juke4.jpg).  I'm a little worried, however, that it might look kinda cheesy.  I know a lot of old jukebox designs were a little cheesy (to me), and I could get away with it a little more than I could in my MAME cabinet, but I dunno.   I think I need some opinions from the experts here.  What do you think?  Should I go for the routered/rope light effect, or a painted design on the side?  Here's a cheap-o MSPaint concept drawing - http://www.kingcupcottage.com/arcade/jukedesign.jpg.

Before I decided on Mickey as the theme of mine I was considering a classic looking juke all lit up and such.

The main things I were considering were PC cold cathode lights - there are some very cool ones out these days.  There are some that look a bit like bubble lights that were tempting but I was really really close to decking the thing out in "liquid neon" tubes.

There are also multi-colored cold cathode tubes that have audio sensors and pulse/change to the music.

June that's a nice project.  you need lights and nice trim.  I think the routed light is a good idea, better than the side art.  Blue or red or both.

The bottom of most jukeboxes has a light in it too.  Maybe you could find an electronic circuit that's easy to make that can take a 40 watt bulb or two and make it flash with the music.

I had just decided to settle on just painting the cab, and then, if I didn't like it, I could add the lights later.  But after seeing these suggestions, I think it's time for a redesign.  Hmmm... I'm off to convince the spouse.  (I keep telling him that this is a MUCH cheaper addiction than booze or shoe shopping.....!)

Hey DeathDealer, I like the design of your jukebox cabinet.  It's clean, and the color and shape remind me of a professional musician's sound system.  Thanks for posting the pics.

Mine should be painted over the weekend, so I plan to have more pictures after the 4th.  And Zathras, I did leave it hooked up several hours last weekend to see if the buttons would get warm.  The rectangular ones didn't, but the triangles sure did warm up.  Maybe since they're smaller, they don't disperse the heat as well??  I may try to drill some teeny holes in the underside to see if venting them helps at all.  I guess for the long run, LED lights may be better.  I'm impatient to get it done now, though, so I'm just going to stick with the bulbs that came in them for now.

Hi Guys, June and pcdoctor

If You want some nice light in the front or side, it's an easy way to do some cool effects.
I'm shure You all have seen those light tunnels where the ligts dissapear into the wall.

  It's easiest to make this when You are building Your jukebox, begause then it can be build flush with the walls.

So, Here's my best of a description:

Get hold of some of the films used to tint Your car windows because The clue here is the films. If these films are put on piece of glass and then put with the mirrored side against each other You can then look in fro either sides. Put a ramp of light between the glasses, and You have a light tunnel.
Bild this into Your jukbox/Cab so that You can look in from one side, and vaiola!!

About 10 years ago, I made six like these for Youthclub's Disco.

Wow - thanks for all the awesome suggestions.  I just may go ahead and make that light tunnel as a separate game room decoration when the jukebox is finished, too.

Unfortunately, the rainy weather has kept us from sanding and painting the jukebox this past week, so I have no progress to report.  Perhaps our next project should be to build a garage....  

So DeathDealer, I have no new pics quite yet.  However, I should have one of the marquee soon.  After seeing some of the great work that Pixelhugger has done, I contacted him about the marquee design.  I am SO psyched - he captured the feel we wanted *exactly*!  In fact, I'll probably wind up using a variation of the design for the side art as well.  So, look for some cool artwork pics shortly.  

Thanks again for the encouragement and advice.  It makes the project a lot more fun - even on the days you get rained out!

Hi, and sorry for the delay in construction updates.  We took a few days off for vacation and returned home to find one of our fishtanks had leaked, spilling 55 gallons of salt water all over the floor.  Besides the loss of several corals and and the hardwood floor damage in that room, our whole house smells like low tide right now....peeeeuuu!  

So, our attention has been (hopefully briefly) diverted from jukebox construction for a short time.   I really hope to get back to it in a week or so, though. This kind of construction isn't nearly as fun as jukebox-building!

Thanks everyone, for the sympathy on our smelly fish tank disaster.  Fortunately, it was just a tank for growing coral fragments, so we lost a bunch of $$$ in coral, but no fish.  Ohmygoodness DrewKaree, I can not imagine what I would do if our 150 gallon tank sprung a leak!    After hearing your story, I will definitely remember to test first if we ever move.

Today we finally got back to the jukebox....yaaaaay!  We'll get the priming and sanding done today, and we'll hopefully do the painting one night this week.  

In the meantime, I do have one pic to share.  Pixelhugger designed an awesome marquee for the jukebox.  This is his first draft, below.  We liked it so much that we decided to use the center ball for the side art.  I think he's going to add a chrome or neon border to it for the sides.  Coooool, yes?

We're getting close now.... we painted and installed the sound-activated lights and t-molding this week.  The paint still seems to be a leeeetle bit tacky, so I'm going to wait until tomorrow to wire up the buttons.  We'll put the front door back on then, too.

I have an observation on your marquee.  The CJR ball is "glassy" while the rest of the marquee is decidedly NOT.  I'm thinking either make the whole marquee glass-like or make the ball "flat".  I would opt for the whole marquee to be glass-like, as that CJR ball looks phat!  

If, after looking at it, you think I'm an idiot, then just tell me to blow it out of my nether region   but I really think you'll like it more if the whole thing is glass-like.

Pixel, if you read this, excellent work yet again and I'm sure the final version of the artwork will have everyone raving about yet another of your contributions.

Yeah, now that I see that, it's easier to see it on the smaller version.  I think adding a glow around the neon is definately needed to make it more photorealistic.  

I'm wondering if the light angle on the top of the ball will match the tubing glow, or would something more along the lines of the area in the snippet I have match up?  Dunno if you follow, but basically make the shine (light angle) go further up on the ball so that the area I've shown is the light that shows on the top of the ball.  

BTW, this in photoshop, yes?

Hi Gary,

I'm sure I could have found the lights a lot cheaper, but I realized on Friday that it would be *much* easier to install them underneath while the cabinet was empty.  So, I just ran out to our local CompUSA and bought these:

They were oh-so-easy to install.  We just screwed them into the bottom of the cabinet and ran the wires up through a hole in the floor.  Then, they just plugged straight into the PC power supply with a Molex connector.   Here's the underside of the cabinet to show placement of the lights and the hole for wiring.

We got a few steps closer to completion today.  Got the buttons wired and lighted, stuck the front door on, and a few other little things.  Everything is done now except for the glass in front of the monitor and the artwork.  

Oh, and I think I need to remodel the whole room now so that I can show off the jukebox.  Guess that last step might just be a girl thing....

Yup, I've been slacking.... hehee.    Nah, actually, it's all done, except for the marquee and side art.  The files are in the hands of the printer, so the juke should be 100% completed once the printing is done.... woo hoo!

I'm not sure how long it takes to get the prints back, but I promise to post the final pics as soon as I'm done happy-dancing all around the jukebox.

Somebody grab that camera, 'cuz there's a whole lotta happy dancing doing on at my house!  We received the marquee and side art this week, and finally got it all installed today.....wheeeeee!

I'm going to have to take some better pictures later.  Right now, my camera is jiggling to the beat way too much.  Major kudos to Pixelhugger and Scott at Mamemarquees.  This pic definitely doesn't do their work justice.  I promise to post more when we're done shaking our groove thangs over here....

June, you showed the Logitech speakers - how did you place them behind the grilles?  Did you disassemble them,  put 'em on a shelf, remove the face and bolt 'em on...my brother in law has that set, and I got him a sweet  deal on 'em, so I am thinking of getting another fo mahsef!

Those little feeties on the bottom of the smaller speakers made them really easy to mount.  We just made large holes in the cabinet to match the speaker grille size and attached the speakers behind them.  We used the little holes that were already in the feet to screw the speakers to the monitor shelf and the "ceiling" of the jukebox.  For the ceiling ones, I think my husband drilled a few additional holes in back side of the feet also, since the holes were only in the "toes."

Here's a view from the inside that shows it a little better than I can explain it.

Hey, mebbe you guys already tried this, but my BIL's computer is set into an alcove, so we mounted his rear speakers on the outer edge above his head on the ceiling...did you guys see if loosening that back screw and flipping the "base/bracket" around would give you better positioning towards the speaker grill?  It may already be too late, or not worth it, but just an idear.

As the owner of two cats, I'm going to have to side with the cats in this case.  It's YOUR fault you didn't cat-proof it  

Check this idea out.  Get some chain, you decide on the "daintiness" of the size of links you want.  Get enough to hold the door open at the max, and screw one link into the door, and screw the other end to the inside of your cab.  It won't stop the "crap, it happened again" factor, but it'll stop it from dropping all the way.  

If you want more security, add a second chain on the other side.  

They make hinges for this, but they will be expensive.  

Check this one out....$26!  It's a lid support/hinge.  



They also make cabinet hinges that open a certain amount of degrees, that may have been a solution.

One other solution....make the slot in the bottom of the door, or on the backside, since your juke's on wheels.

Bugger about the mem key too. I was thinking about using one on my MAME cab (Construction FINALLY underway) so that advice you gave has given me food for thought. Im going to be putting a keyboard draw on it and was going to put the keyhole in the same spot you did. Thanks for the warning

Thanks for the encouragement on the jukebox and the leg, LordDamo.  The bonbons seem to be doing the trick.  I should be healed up and back dancing to the juke very soon!

I gave hubby a nudge on the plans, and he has restarted on them.  I'm hoping they'll be done before the month is up, but I hate to make promises..... especially since I'm slow to chase him down with a bum leg.    

Drew, I'm headed to Home Depot this week to get the chains on the door that you suggested.  It hasn't flopped open since we added the extra magnets, but I did catch the cat perched on it again yesterday.  I'm gonna play it safe and get the door chains before another accident happens.  Might as well pick up some more bonbons while I'm out...

Hmmmm, I wonder if you could get an old pool table & do the MAME thing and do a referb - that would work too. Main thing would be condition of the legs and how flat the top is . . .

Since new pool tables are so expensive, we went a cheaper route, and got a Pockey table off of Ebay.  I always wanted a pool table, too, but we're actually spending lots more time playing the air hockey side.  

If you have a smaller room for your gameroom, this works out really well.  Plus, it allows space for more MAME cabs.... mwuhuhuhaaa....!

I didn't get any computer playtime at work today.    The auction you found on Ebay is from the same guy I bought mine from.  I don't remember it being quite that much money, though.  However, I do get frequent bouts of spending amnesia - I think it's a female thing.  

And Daniel270, this seller does have a regular website (www.gametables4less.com) but the cost is even steeper there.  $599 - aaaack!  I'm pretty sure I didn't pay more than that with shipping included.  It's worth it, though.  It's built pretty well, flips easily, and it's even sturdy enough to act as an excellent jukebox workbench!

It's a different brand, but that one at Sears might even be better.   It says it has a steel frame construction, and I think mine is all wood/laminate.

Sorry to post off topic - this is a little something for June, If she desides to try to build a air hockey table, as described in a previous post of mine.

I was racking my brain about the jig (as described above), till I found this

When I saw the 2nd diagram on the page, the penny dropped "Ahhhh, its not a jig I want to use, BUSHES!~!~!".

So yeah, way to do it is get a bush thats 1/4" in outer diameter, with a 1/16" hole in the center. You could make one easly enough if you have access to a drill press.

Just thought I would share this with you, if you wnat to try and make one of these . . . . . .

Hi!  I have been reading this fourm and just wanted to put out there that June's Plans/Design are bound for greatness in the BYO-community!  
This style of JB cab is more what I remember actually droping quarters in, I'm 26.  I love it, and am jumping on the band wagon of wanting to build one that looks like this

Sorry to be a pain June, and im not having a go at your drafting skills, but im finding it a little hard to understand your labeling system that you have used on your plan of the side section, Is this a system thats used in the US? Ive attached another pic with the format im used to here in Australia.

No need to do it all nice and neat, as you have done with the ones on your site, just open M$ paint and scrible the numbers on there, as long as I can read them - LOL

If you redo the picture to add measurements just drop me a message and I'll redo the GIF file.  You said in your message you were using MS paint to save the picture, so just save it as a monochrome bitmap and post a link to it for me to download.  It'll be easier if it doesn't arrive as a JPG.

Being that I come from Australia, our MDF comes in metric sheets that are 1200mm X 2400mm. - I was just looking for a round-about measurement - thanks for the info though, saves me doing the conversion + its a bit more accurate, thanks

Im soooo sorry to be a pain June, its just I started to make this the other day. ( ) and I did the sheet with all the shelf's on it first, it was nice and easy. Next came the sheet for the sides.

wow that is a killer jukebox. 

i've just begun assembling components for one of my own and had a question.  the logitec speaker system you used is 5.1 but i'm assuming you are using it in some sort of 2.1 stereo mode.  i'm guessing that either the rear and center speakers go unused or maybe just the center channel (with the rears duplicating the mains).  could you shed some more light on how the speakers are set up (ie line out from the computer, x # of speakers are utilized or whatever it may be)?

Hello drmlvr, I somehow missed your recent post -- sorry I haven't responded before now.  I saw the pics of your jukebox project today... it's looking grrrreat!

I have been really happy with Arcade Jukebox.   We haven't hit any problems with it, and it is so easy to use that my five year old can even pick her own songs.  She and my husband really like the trackball.  I'm more of a button person myself, so I stick with the buttons 99% of the time.  With the controls shown below, I navigate just as quickly without the trackball.

Here's the mapping I used.  Since we have the 2 choices of navigation methods, I sorta grouped them in color-coded sections:

- Red button in upper left corner - Alt + F4.  Even though you can exit Jukebox 8 with the escape key, I chose this combination so I can exit any Windows app with this button.  That way, I don't ever have to open the juke
to load more songs.   The only time I get the keyboard out is if I need to edit a song title in an MP3 tag.  I could use the trackball, I know, but I just like those buttons....

- Yellow button in upper left corner - tab key.  This is the key that brings up the menu, if you don't want to use the trackball.

- Next comes the big blue trackball - ya just HAVE to get a lighted one!   

- Blue button next to trackball - left mouse click (select).

- White arrow keys

- White selection button (enter)

I really like having both options for song selections.  Although I do have to admit that nearly everyone but me goes straight for the trackball.  I hope this helps, and I hope I'm not too late with my reply!!!

  Has anyone else built this juke? I am looking for a shopping list of what I need to finish it. I have all the wood cut. I need an idea of how many brackets were used to hold this together. I also need to know how the 2x4's are attached. I didn't see any brackets...are they glued or screwed in? I prefer not to nail or screw anything from the outside. I am using oak and plan on staining it when I am done. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi MPTech, I'm glad you liked the juke.  We still use it often, and it is a hit with my 7 year old's friends, too.  We set it up so that she can choose her PG-rated database of songs, which leaves out some of the ones with words I don't want her to learn just yet.   

I'm not online much lately, because I have been out of town caring for my mom, who has cancer.  As soon as she beats it, though, I'm headed back to work on another half-completed project, and maybe some more detailed juke plans.  I really miss everybody here!!!

I just finished my first arcade project and I've been looking for a jukebox project.  I stumbled upon this design which is exactly what I've been looking for.  I love the way this jukebox looks.  When I saw it, I knew that had to be my next project.  Are the plans for this project posted in a particular place?  I can't seem to find them.  Any help would be appreciate.  thanks.
