Sound Stutter, or double sound.
« on: May 14, 2004, 11:22:03 am »
Hello everyone, I am having an issue with some sound in mame32. For instance when I play mk2. Sometimes the sound is fine, other times it is delayed, and other times it seems to double up the sound. Any ideas what I might be able to do to fix this. I have a sound blaster live card.

Any suggestions would be great

Joe

What are your system specs?  Sounds like you might be short on processing power.  During gameplay hit F11 and see if you are getting full fps.  If not you can try an older version of mame or upgrade your system.

p4 1.3 ghz, 640 rdram, sound blaster live. ati 7200 64 ddr.

When I hit F11, I am getting 47 to 53fps, max is set at 53.

Sound is really good, it is just annoying to have the late sound, double sounds, scratchy sounds.

Anytime you don't get full fps chances are u will get distorted sound.  If it is dropping down to 47fps at times that is when you will get the sound stuttering.  The MK series was alot faster in older versions of mame so if you really want to play it I would advise getting mame.72 or a version near that

I would recommend manually cutting the sound sampling rate in half. This won't really matter much to the enjoyment of the game anyways since the original sound wasn't THAT great to begin with. You should notice an increase in playability and better (or at least normal) sound.

By the way, why aren't you getting full frame rates? I get full frame rates on a much worse system. I don't use MAME32, though. If MAME32 doesn't work so well you may wanna give fastmame a try.

If this happens with a lot of games or with music the problem may not be MAME. You may want to check for more recent audio drivers or move the sound card to a PCI slot further away from other cards to reduce interference.
