Squeaky PC flight stick fix?
« on: May 11, 2004, 11:09:15 am »
I have a PC flightstick I am going to put in my control panel, but it creaks and squeaks whenever you move it.  I think the noise comes from the cheap plastic housing sections rubbing together, so how should I fix it?  Should I fill the flight stick with caulking to create less creak and give it a heavier feel? Or should try to glue the edges? Or should I fill the flight stick with gunpowder and watch the show?

If you find out it definitely IS plastic to plastic contact (usually the plastic centering grommet thingy rubbing against the housing), try a little white lithium grease on the offending pieces.

If it's just the plastic itself creaking, there's really no fix for that, unless you can figure out which piece is creaking, and get it secured somehow (glue, screws, etc...).

PC sticks tend to do this :(

If you aren't in too much of a hurry and you don't mind spending a little more, I'd thoroughly recommend checking ebay for a cheap arcade analog stick.  Easier to mount and they feel a lot nicer IMO.  Not many come up here in the UK, but I would think you'd see a few if you're in the US...

Yeah, but I already own the PC flightstick and free is always cheaper than eBay.  I am going to take the stick apart, examine it, and glue, caulk, and grease the thing until it either stops creaking or stops moving altogether.

Very true.  If you manage to stop the creaking I'd be interested to know how - I had one that did exactly the same...

I took the flight stick apart last night to see if there was any clear visible reason the stick was creaky, and there was.  The grip assemble consists of three parts, the two halves of the grip and a "hilt" piece. The hilt piece is designed to rest your hand on.  The hilt was the source of 90% of the creaking.  It was not screwed to the grip, but held in place by plastic tabs and the whole hilt assembly is free to move a little bit against a whole lot of the grip.  This causes the irritating creaking.  I just took the thing off to test it and it is not real important, but does serve some purpose. I am betting that with some rubber glue or caulking slapped between the three plastic pieces, the creaking will go away. Additionally, I might screw the hilt piece down.
