Question: How thick should the Plexi be for the Monitor Bezel
« on: February 28, 2004, 08:58:59 am »
Hi All,

How thick should the monitor bezel be on a 26" Cabinet opening? Is 1/4" too thick?

Also, anyone out there use Acrylic instead of Plexi?

The thickness really depends on a few factors.

1) How pissed off you get when the moth!r@#!@#  game cheats you!

2) How good you are at martial arts.

3) If you are good at the games to begin with (NOTE:  Two way sword here... if you suck you get pissed... but if you get really really good... then you really really know when the !@# game cheats you... so more direct anger)

4) Do you keep power tools or baseball bats near your cabinet?

5) Did you build arcade quality controls because you have destroyed more then one hand held?

6) Ever get so mad at your keyboard that the keys are flyingup in the air as you pound away?  (sad enough... I had this happen... the computer so cheated me)

7) Repeat the questions for all family members.

a lot of people use 1/8"

if you spent a lot of time on your cab you're not going to punch the monitor.  Hope that helps.

OK, OK. I have taken my anger management course and feel I can hold my self back a little LilWolf when the Mutants start hoarding  >:(

So 1/8" is the norm. Does it sway at all in the middle or should I care? Has anyone used dark tint on the back side? If so, is it hard to install?

Are you sure you want to go the plexi route? I've had better success in the long run spending a little more up front and getting a piece of tempered glass for the bezel.

You can even get the glass smoked, which will also cut down on eye strain.

Just my two cents.  ;)

I used 1/4" plexi and it looks fine.   I guess I did not want to go with 1/8" (which I did use on my control) for the monitor bezel since it seems to flimsey(sp?) to me.

Yeah, glass sounds better to me too. Plexi might work fine, but glass is even better.

That is what I saw on the first screen listing all the boards. I was hoping it wasn't a question for the "Everything Else" board.

As far as I know, Plexi IS acrylic. Acrylic is what the material is called and Plexi is a brandname. Polycarbonate (with brandname Lexan) is another option, but that scratches easier than Plexi.

But think about it, you put glass in your windows. Why not on your cab? Plexi does scratch easier than glass and it can become "milky" over time. Make sure the glass is tempered (and if possible smoked).

I use 1/4" amber "smoked" plexi and love it. There are a couple of shots here:

5 MAME cabs and counting...

Ever wonder what full side art looks like?

im using 3mm smoked and a clear 6mm plexi on top (to protect the smoked stuff).
so 9mm plexi, around 1/2"? in total.

I used one 1/8 inch sheet of tinted plexi and another 1/8 inch sheet of clear plexi on top of it. The plan is to sandwich the bezel art between them once I get it printed.
