Steering Wheel / U-HID
« on: September 09, 2020, 01:15:51 pm »
Can anyone help me with connecting a Steering Wheel to my MAME cabinet using a U-HID interface? I have what I believe to be a quadrature steering wheel from a Top Speed arcade cabinet.

On page 9 of the Top Speed manual here, you can see the encoder wheel (#23) and optical board (#17) in the parts breakdown of the wheel so it is definitely a 360 degree (optical) wheel.

To connect it to a U-HID, look at the bottom of page 16 where you see the optical board connector.
- Red wire is 5v (main PCB edge connector pin D)
- Black wire is ground
- Blue and green wires are the quadrature data lines (main PCB edge connector pins d and 26)
*** If the wheel moves opposite of the expected direction, swap the data lines. ***

The only thing I'm not certain about is if this optical board is an "active-low" device that will work with the U-HID as-is or if it is an "active-high" device.
- Either way, it won't hurt to make the four connections and see if it works.   ;D

OK Thank you. I'm waiting for my connectors to arrive so I'm gathering as much info as I can. I'll let you know what happens.  ;D
