Big N going after Super Mario 64 PC
« on: May 09, 2020, 05:46:18 pm »
Anyone try the unofficial PC release of Super Mario 64? While I understand why Nintendo is going after the download sites that are hosting this, I think they are over stepping their boundaries by copyright claiming all youtube gameplay videos. But, I guess it's just Nintendo being Nintendo at this point.

If you don't enforce your rights on things like these you lose them.  They have to do it to protect intellectual property.  As much as it sucks for people just wanting to enjoy it they are doing exactly what they are supposed to do from a legal perspective.

Yet you can buy bootleg Donkey Kong boards literally anywhere.  And if you report those board sales to Nintendo... they do nothing.

Yeah, well given that Mario is nintendo's flagship character, and given that SM64 is a hell of a lot newer than DK arcade... I kind of get it.

Nintendo still sells SM64 on their online platforms... actively.

And if anyone besides Billy Mitchell cared about Donkey Kong that would be a problem.  The last thing Nintendo did with that game was release it on the virtual console on the wii, and that was the NES version.  Meanwhile all their popular games have been re-released a million times, including, yes, Mario 64, which was remade on the DS and is rumored to get a HD remaster for the switch.  It's kind of like how people got pissed that they took down AM2R and then a couple of months later they announced their own Metroid 2 remake and it made sense.

Well, Mario Bros is on the Pandora's Box and they aren't shutting those down either.   ::)

I totally understand the actual game because of the IP, but its the YT vids that I've always thought was ridiculous for them to claim.

Nintendo doesn't seem to give a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about their arcade stuff, or they at least overlook it. They've gone after countless console ROM sites but have never touched MAME. A certain tracker used for MAME sets won't so much as even allow Nintendo to be mentioned on their site still has the complete set available which includes DK, Mario Bros, Vs. games, etc.

I mean, people like you say stuff like this that's simply not true.  Very prominent sites have been hosting Nintendo ISOs and ROMs for years... and they're still functional.  I don't feel like getting another hand slap from PL1 but this stuff is seriously easy to find.

 :dunno

Do what thou wilt.

Oh you're right. Thanks for correcting me. Nintendo never goes after console ROM sites after all.  ::)

That's not true. I don't have a switch.

But all 3 from the trilogy, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong JR, and Donkey Kong 3 [arcade]
have been released for it.

Nintendo didn't release them.  There's a third party (I forget the name) that releases old arcade games on all the modern consoles.  They go to the IP holders to lease the rights and do all the work themselves.

So, aside from all the other meaningful bickering, has anybody actually tried the game? I got it downloaded but havent had a chance to try it yet.

Same stale Mario game you haven't been playing the last 25 years, but it looks slightly better.

Yeah I mean..  It's mario 64, but you can see more than normal because you can force a larger resolution.  It's kind of a "holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- this is running on windows" kind of thing.

I think now that the source is out you're likely to see people screwing with the game, creating level editors, adding levels, features, enemies, etc.  That will be kind of cool.
