My very first pocket hole!!
« on: August 10, 2019, 07:43:49 am »
Despite the fact that I'm 100% sure this means nothing to anyone other than me, I felt compelled to take a picture of my very first pocket hole and post it for posterity!

I feel like a lad who's had his first knee-trembler!

Awesome...  if the rain will either come on and rain or go away, I can finish painting my 5' tall Q Bert that was assembled entirely out of 1/2" mdf and pocket hole screws...  very sturdy...  my Galaga is next and will be built the same way.

I have never tried that, Jenn has never seen that used on a machine (Although possibly old wooden television cabinets) but have noticed it used in more recent times on custom kitchen cabinets. However I have secretly been curious and noticed that Kreg jig set it really quite reasonably priced, And certainly makes one think of the posibilities...Thx for the pic.

Hi Jenn, yep I got the Kreg Jig R3 junior. It was £30 and came with various screws and some of those dowels to put in and cover the hole.

The instructions are really easy to follow and the holes I drilled worked out fine.

Maybe not *that* good.... but at my age I get to drill more pocket holes than I get knee-tremblers....  ;D ;D ;D

I have a full Kreg set.

However - 99.9% of the time - I use this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Kreg-MKJKIT-Mini-Jig-Kit/dp/B00065WPP2/ref=sr_1_13?crid=2ASESGGMYXDLV&keywords=kreg+pocket+hole+jig&qid=1565620490&s=gateway&sprefix=kreg+pocket%2Caps%2C134&sr=8-13

So you can really lower the cost of entry/testing with it.

It solves some joinery problems that otherwise are clunky.

I have a Kreg kit sitting in my garage unopened, with some wood next to it ready to be turned into furniture. (Turntable stand/ record cabinet). I look forward to my first pocket joint as well, but it has been sitting for about 2 months, as my higher priority stuuf seem to keep creeping in, like a downed tree in my yard, or my boat motor seals going bad.

Yep, my primary reason for learning them. But I would also like to start doing a bit of woodworking and learning more about it in general so I'm sure it will come in handy for other projects in the future too :)

Just like all you desert people have a in-ground pool, up here we all have a boat. Motor is from the 70's, but it still has plenty of life in it.

That sort of thing usually precedes making the pocket hole.

Love me a good ol pocket hole, but a couple if issues i have ran into using them for my first cab construction.

1. The mdf can split if you just drive the screw home, almost need to hand screw it.
2. The screws can foul and collapse your T-Track slot.

stepped outside and took a few pics of 3/4 scale Galaga...  I did not build these with exact 3/4 scale dimensions, I shrunk the original Galaga shape down to 48 inches, like the Arcade1Up cabinets, then I stretched them back up to 60", trying to make sure I had 18" for the bezel/monitor area and then I added whatever was left to make the machine hit somewhere around 60".  I basically start with a template for the side panels and I build the rest as needed...   I use 1/4" mdf for the back boards.

I have a vinyl cutter than I can load paper into and draw my designs so that's what I do, then I cut out my pattern, trim it, and tape it on 1/2 mdf and rough cut the first piece with a jigsaw then sand down smooth with a palm sander.  I then use that original trace out two more side panels, the I rough cut those then clamp all three together and use a router to finish cut the two extra sides which are the two I will use in my build.  I keep the original side as a template in case I want to build another.  (So maybe a Mad Planets or a Ms Pacman are in my future...  after a Pole Position and a Operation Wolf (with original gun)).

I rent a 1300 sq ft home with two kids and a wife and the garage also houses my race car so building these things does two things for me...  it has helped me learn how to do some wood working I was afraid to try and allows me to build something kid friend (perfect height for my 8 year old to stand and play and I'm 5' 7" so not much bending for me, a stool will be perfect)

Here's some WIP of my Galaga....   I took a picture of the bottom of the cabinet and the speaker panel that has my pocket holes with screws...  I use a mileswood brand pocket hole jig and screws, 1" coarse screws.
