MS8-29 flyback issue?
« on: May 30, 2018, 08:56:08 am »
I am hoping for some expert guidance on this as I don't want to create new problems. I have a Steel Gunner 2 that played blind. Found blown b+ fuse. Tested and found a dead VR and HOT, both shorted. Replaced a blown cap, a burnt resistor and the VR and HOT. Powered up with a light bulb and all looked good so I installed it on the tube and fired it up with the fuse back in. Monitor came on, looked great but there is an issue. This problem is worse when cold and gets better as it warms up. The image will flicker/shake/disappear and when it does this there is a static noise from the board near the flyback. I cant be sure the noise is the flyback but I turned off the lights to look for an arc and didn't see one. I have seen it posted that the flybacks on these boards are rarely an issue so is it possible its a different component making the noise and flickering the screen? Worst case, if it is the flyback, is there any chance of getting a new one or is this a deal breaker for the whole chassis? Thanks for any help!

Problem solved. Removed old solder and re-soldered the flyback. I had already tried just re-flowing it before I posted yesterday but that wasn't sufficient in this case. Just figured I would post the solution in case anyone comes searching in the future.
